Or do you prefer it deep-fried and slathered in chocolate sauce? Either way, be warned of some spoilers ahead!

#10: Avenging His Father

“The Princess Bride” (1987)

Driven by a lifelong quest to avenge his father's murder at the hands of the six-fingered man, Inigo's scheme unfolds as he joins forces with Westley and Princess Buttercup to thwart the villainous Prince Humperdinck. Inigo's unwavering determination, exceptional swordsmanship, and iconic catchphrase, have captivated audiences for decades. His pursuit of justice, coupled with his charismatic charm and heartfelt backstory, has elevated this film to a level of timeless cinematic brilliance. The film's enduring popularity lies in its ability to blend adventure, romance, and revenge into an unforgettable and enchanting tale.

#9: Beautiful, Scheming & Rich

“Cruel Intentions” (1999)

Avid fans of teen melodrama know this essential piece of nineties cinema. Set in the elite world of Manhattan’s wealthy socialites, this film follows the conniving stepsiblings Kathryn and Sebastian. In exchange for various favors, the characters manipulate each other to fulfill their own superficial desires. Kathryn bets Sebastian that he cannot take Annette's virginity, hoping to win ownership of his car if he loses. As he tries to woo Annette, Sebastian predictably falls in love with her. He eventually meets his untimely demise in a car accident, but not all is lost. As it turns out, he’d composed an entire book exposing Kathryn’s devious behavior. It serves as an important reminder that the truth always comes out.

#8: The Bestie’s Betrayal

“The Count of Monte Cristo” (2002)

This adaptation of the literary classic of the same name offers a compelling look at a web of betrayal and its consequences. The story follows Edmond Dantès, a young and innocent sailor who is wrongfully imprisoned due to a conspiracy orchestrated by those he once considered friends. After years of unjust incarceration, Edmond escapes and reinvents himself as the enigmatic and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo. He carefully orchestrates each step by manipulating his enemies, exposing their secrets, and ultimately destroying their lives. The moral dilemmas and emotional toll it exacts on both the avenger and the targets are on full display in this tale of revenge.

#7: Revenge Knows No Age

“Leon: The Professional” (1994)

As it intricately weaves together elements of vengeance, redemption, and unlikely bonds, this film explores the transformative power of revenge. After being orphaned by corrupt government agents, a lonely twelve-year-old is taken in by a seasoned assassin. Mathilda's thirst for revenge propels the narrative forward while Leon's reluctant mentorship adds layers of complexity to their relationship. Their symbiotic connection showcases a subtle dynamic; Leon's skills merge with Mathilda's determination, and vengeance for the murder of Mathilda’s little brother is eventually had, even if there’s a great price to pay. The story's brilliance lies in its ability to explore themes of moral ambiguity and redemption, making for a story that is both emotionally gripping and intellectually satisfying.

#6: Bird of Prey

“The Crow” (1994)

This haunting tale isn’t afraid to explore the metaphysical side of revenge. A man named Eric Draven rises from the dead to avenge both his own murder and the brutal assault and death of his fiancée. This horrifying tragedy serves as a powerful emotional motivation for Eric, which captivates audiences with its raw intensity. The film's gritty and gothic visuals add immense depth to its narrative, and the dark, brooding atmosphere perfectly complements the themes of retribution and the pursuit of righteousness. While many narratives discourage revenge and tell us to make peace with and forgive the bad things that have happened to us, here is a movie that does the exact opposite.

#5: Not the Dog!

“John Wick” (2014)

For this titular character, the unforgivable act of targeting a dog becomes the catalyst for a relentless and high-octane revenge spree. This aspect of the film resonated with audiences because it taps into the universal emotional connection between humans and their pets. Made even worse, of course, was the fact that this adorable fur ball was a gift from Wick’s late wife. Grief is often intertwined in these stories of seeking retribution, but this one feels especially powerful. John sets out to find the men and make them pay, and what follows is the kind of scheme that keeps you glued to the edge of your seat for over an hour.

#4: Amazing Amy

“Gone Girl” (2014)

When his wife’s disappearance captures mainstream media’s attention, the focus shifts to the husband as his innocence becomes increasingly unclear. It’s eventually revealed that Amy, the wife, staged her own kidnapping with the intention of framing her husband for her death. Popularizing and condemning the concept of the “cool girl”, this is a movie about a woman folding under societal pressures, and the warped way she takes her power back. The extent of Amy’s schemes is truly remarkable as she fabricates a year's worth of diary entries to incriminate her husband and, in a horrifying twist ending, traps him in their turbulent marriage.

#3: Monkey See, Monkey Do

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2011)

In this incredible book adaptation, the young and brilliant investigator-slash-hacker Lisbeth Salander, finds herself under the control of a sadistic guardian. He abuses his power, extorting favors from Lisbeth by threatening her institutionalization. However, Lisbeth turns the tables on him in a shocking reversal. Recording the abuse, Lisbeth exacts her vengeance by chaining her guardian, brutally assaulting him, and tattooing a damning message on his chest. This scene showcases Lisbeth's unyielding wrath and her resourcefulness in using evidence to regain control over her life. It also has some sharp irony, as Lisbeth's retaliation mirrors the reprehensible acts committed against her. As a whole this story is a complex exploration of the lengths one can go to in order to seek justice and reclaim their autonomy.

#2: Her Path of Fury

“Promising Young Woman” (2020)

This harrowing film follows Cassie, a woman seeking revenge after the tragic passing of her friend. Cassie meticulously plans her retribution, employing unorthodox methods to expose those involved in the assault. The movie’s exploration of societal complicity and the consequences of toxic masculinity is almost too chilling to watch. Complex themes are tackled with a sharp and thought-provoking approach, highlighting the pervasiveness of misogyny. The final act plays as a Greek tragedy. It forces us to confront disturbing truths and challenges traditional notions of justice. The incredible performances, particularly Carey Mulligan's portrayal of Cassie, urge us to address these systemic issues in our society.

#1: The Bride

“Kill Bill: Volume 1” (2003) & “Kill Bill: Volume 2” (2004)

In this Tarantino classic, the Bride awakens from a four-year coma with a cold vendetta against the team of assassins who betrayed her. As she embarks on her quest, the Bride’s connections with her former deadly comrades are revealed to be more personal than we expect. With a bold red pen, she creates a detailed list and cuts down her enemies with an exquisite samurai sword. The gang’s leader is the titular character Bill, who happens to also be the Bride’s former partner. A lot of us have had experiences with a bad ex, but hopefully none have been this sinister. The film’s impeccable fight choreography and stunning practical effects highlight the brutality of our heroine’s journey.
