Top 10 Richest Game Companies

These companies are behind some of our very favorite video games, and they certainly have the money to show for it. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we're counting down our picks for the top ten richest game companies.

For this list, we’re going to be looking at the companies that are in the video game development business that are worth the most money. Because it's hard to find reliable information, we won't be focusing squarely on divisions or subsidiaries of companies. Instead, we'll be going straight to the top and discussing the parent companies as a whole. That said, we'll be adjusting our ranking to prioritize video game development, as many parent companies specialize in various entertainment markets.

#10: Ubisoft

Yes yes, we know, Ubisoft makes the same game every year. However, this business strategy is clearly paying off for them, as they currently worth $3.7 billion. This French company has subsidiaries all over the globe, including Canada, Spain, and Romania, among many, MANY others. This is necessary as Ubisoft is behind some of the biggest franchises in gaming today, including “Watch Dogs,” “Far Cry,” the “Tom Clancy” games and “Assassin’s Creed.” While some may see them as greedy due to their oversaturation in the market and their prevalent use of microtransactions, it’s evident through their massive worth that gamers can’t get enough.

#9: Konami

Konami is a company with a perfect mix of old and new, spanning multiple generations and securing huge hits in each. They saw great success on the console market in the 80s with the “Castlevania” and “Contra” franchises, and have even invaded casinos and arcades with “Frogger” and “Dance Dance Revolution,” the latter of which helped pioneer the rhythm genre of gaming. They have continued their console success with hits like “Silent Hill” and “Pro Evolution Soccer,” but their most successful title has to be the “Metal Gear” series, which has sold over 40 million units worldwide. Yes: They have made some questionable decisions in recent years, but they’re still worth $3.82 billion.

#8: Time Warner

While images of TV and movies may spring to mind when you think of Time Warner, they actually have a pretty solid grasp of the video game market. Time Warner are the owners of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, whose products include the “F.E.A.R.” and “LEGO” games, but also the extremely popular “Batman Arkham” and recent “Mortal Kombat” titles. Time Warner is one of the largest entertainment companies in the entire world, and they are valued at a massive $92.9 billion. However, because that figure is largely contributed from their Film and TV departments as well as DC comics, their placement on this has been decreased, as we are placing emphasis on video game development. Still, $92.9 billion! That's a chunk of change.

#7: Bandai Namco Entertainment

The result of a merger between development companies Bandai and Namco, Bandai Namco went by the name of Namco Bandai in the West before internationally changing its name to Bandai Namco in 2014. Get all that? Bandai are behind many “Digimon” titles, while Namco are behind many more household names due to their domineering presence in the arcade market. They are the developers of “Galaxian,” “Tekken,” and the RIIIIDGE RACER series. Oh, and also a little game called “Pac-Man.” Since the merger, they’ve found new success in publishing FromSoftware’s Dark Souls’ series and as of December 2016 the company has been valued at around $4.83 billion.

#6: Nintendo

And here we come to the name that everyone knows, including your grandma, who continues to insist on calling every video game console a Nintendo. And with a worth of just over $21 billion, it's obvious that the name continues to spread among generations. Nintendo is easily one of the biggest development companies in the world, stemming from their highly successful consoles, like the NES, SNES, and Wii, to their world-famous games and characters. These are the guys behind some of the biggest names in gaming, including “The Legend of Zelda,” “Metroid,” and, of course, Mario. While it pains us that their current value only puts them at #6, (especially considering who’s next) their upcoming Nintendo Switch may be the light to turn things around.

#5: Electronic Arts

Out of all the entries on this list, EA has been subject of so much controversy dating back to the late 90’s, that we could probably make a list out of it. Despite this, their $21.5 billion valu eproves that gamers can't get enough, regardless of how fishy they may seem. EA really does seem to have a foot in every door, as they are not only THE sports game developers (under their EA Sports label), but they are also behind acclaimed and extremely popular franchises and games like “Dead Space,” “Battlefield,” “The Sims,” and “Star Wars Battlefront.” Say what you will about the company, but with a stacked lineup like that, it's not hard to see why they're so wealthy.

#4: Activision Blizzard

The result of a merger between Activision and Vivendi Games, Activision Blizzard was formed in 2008 and currently operates and publishes some of the biggest franchises in gaming history. Activision, whom has been around since the days of the Atari 2600, are the corporate owners of the “Call of Duty” & “Guitar Hero” franchises. As if that wasn't enough money, Blizzard is the famous developer behind many acclaimed and popular titles, including “StarCraft,” “World of Warcraft,” and “Overwatch.” As a combined force, Activision Blizzard is valued at $29.5 billion, with much more to come in the near future.

#3: Sony

Sony is the Japanese conglomerate that has been dominating the video game market with their PlayStation consoles, the first of which was released way back in 1994 in Japan and 1995 in North America. The company has sold nearly 500 million PlayStation consoles worldwide in the preceding twenty years, which, you know, do the math, and their SIE Worldwide Studios division encompasses many significant development companies, including Naughty Dog, Team Ico, and Santa Monica Studio, giving the PlayStation a significant edge in terms of lucrative console exclusives. Valued at $39 billion, (though that’s including their Electronics departments), the Sony vaults would be a treasure trove that even Nathan Drake would be salivating over.

#2: Tencent

Much like Sony and Time Warner, Tencent is a massive corporation, and it is currently one of the largest internet-based companies in the world, with services in social networking, web portals, and, most importantly, online gaming. Their wide-reaching presence has accumulated in a worth of $245.6 billion. They’re currently partial owners of Epic Games, who’s success is widely attributed to the success of licencing the Unreal Engine, and full owner of Riot Games, developers of the massively popular “League of Legends.” They also are the owners of “Supercell” who are the developers of Clash Of Clans, one of the highest grossing games ever on the app store so…ya, do you need any more explanation?

Before we are blown away by the value of our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

Valve Corporation
$3 billion

Take-Two Interactive
$3.57 billion

#1: Microsoft

Microsoft is truly one of the world's biggest technology corporations, and they have become synonymous with gaming due to their Xbox brand of consoles which started in 2001. Valued at $406.3 billion which includes their computer division, Microsoft is an enormous company, and for good reason. Aside from the aforementioned consoles, Microsoft is also responsible for many hit games and Xbox exclusives, including “Forza Motorsport.” However, it's the “Halo” series that has truly brought in the big bucks. Developed now by 343 Industries, a Microsoft Studios subsidiary, this franchise alone has grossed over $3.4 billion. Whether you're an Xbox or PlayStation fan, there's no denying that Microsoft is a behemoth in the gaming industry.
