#10: “Dirrty” (2002)
Christina Aguilera
When Christina Aguilera released her 2002 album Stripped, the first single was “Dirrty”, and the accompanying music video clearly went for a more sexualized image. What is not clear however, is why some of the videos other images were present. A female body builder, a fire breather, furries, a heavily muscled man in a wrestling mask, none of these things appear to fulfill any point, other than just being weird. The video has been described as “a post-apocalyptic orgy”, and has even been criticized by fellow pop stars such as Shakira and Jessica Simpson.
#9: “Man Overboard” (2000)
Blink 182
If there is one thing that Blink 182’s early 2000s music video made clear about the band, it was these rockers do not take themselves too seriously. This video took things even a little bit further by not just mocking themselves, but many of their previous music videos. “Man Overboard” has the band dreaming and seeing little people taking their places in their previous videos. Taking a band with silly music videos and giving them a little nudge, this video is certainly the most ridiculous video of a pretty strange catalogue.
#8: “Call On Me” (2004)
Eric Prydz
One of the most enduring dance tracks of the 2000s and beyond, “Call On Me” took radio, weddings and any other music centric location by storm. Based strictly on how damn catchy this tune is, the music video should have been assured to receive regular airplay. But when the outrageously sexist and sexualized video came out it became impossible to forget. Featuring a bevy of beautiful women during aerobics in tight and revealing outfits, the pelvic thrusts and unapologetic money shots made this video impossible to take seriously.
#7: “Tribute” (2001)
Tenacious D
A music duo of talented comedic actors Jack Black and Kyle Gass, Tenacious D from the start perfectly matched comedy chops and musical talent. “Tribute”, a song from their debut album, perfectly captured that duality with the release of its music video. Featuring the men recording the song in a karaoke booth in a mall, we get treated to visuals bringing the song’s hilarious story to life. Featuring Dave Grohl in an uncredited guest role as a demon, “Tribute” portrays their music playing abilities as too powerful to overcome, and who are we to disagree?
#6: “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” (2007)
Kanye West
It takes an ego as large as the one that has consumed the once angry and profound man known as Kanye West to release more than one video for a single song. Which is what makes this peculiar alternate video of his song, “Can’t Tell Me Nothing”, all the more strange. Instead of focusing on his own face, we instead get treated to comedian and actor Zach Galifianakis and folk singer-songwriter Will Oldham lip syncing in Kanye West style on farm vehicles. Though we assume there is supposed to be some meaning to all this, we certainly don’t see it.
#5: “Oops I Did It Again” (2000)
Britney Spears
Reportedly conceived by Spears herself, this video featured the star dancing on Mars with a love interest being an astronaut. The visuals have absolutely nothing to do with the song, and the Titanic reference is even more unexpected. During filming Spears was hit in the head with a camera which resulted in stitches for the star and claims she may have suffered a concussion. Had that injury taken place during the planning stages, this video would be a lot more understandable.
#4: “Telephone” (2009)
Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce
Love her or hate her, Lady Gaga has managed to string together a respectable series of hits since she first came to prominence with the song “Just Dance”. Her unpredictable and bizarre image is arguably as responsible for her success as her musical talent and this video is a testament to her ridiculous lifestyle. Featuring horrendous acting, Kill Bill references left and right for no clear reason, and then an absence of dialogue. Beyoncé couldn’t even turn down the weird on this one.
#3: “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” (2003)
The Darkness
If you ever find yourself sitting around and wish there was a video featuring terrible teeth, a man in a far too tight jump suit and a space theme, we’ve got just the thing for you. A band that seems like a throwback to the epic sound and sense of humour about themselves we may not have seen since Queen, The Darkness’ goofy demeanour and awesome sound is sorely missed. We can only imagine the bales of laughter that took place after each and every take in order to bring this masterpiece of ridiculousness to life.
#2: “Stand Up” (2003)
Ludacris feat. Shawnna
If you were to describe the Dave Meyers-directed music video accompanying Ludacris's first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper in one word, it would probably be something like weird, bizarre or strange. Though if you listened to the hip hop song closely enough, you'd also realize that quite a few of the scenes indirectly refer to "Stand Up"'s lyrics. While there are several celebrity cameos, it's the "midget hanging from his necklace," dancers in wheelchairs, 'baby Luda' and much much more that truly put this video on our list. Ridiculous much? Just have a look for yourself!
Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
“Get Down” (2006)
B4-4
“Crazy Frog” (2005)
Axel F
“Take on Me” (2000)
A1
“Jenny From the Block” (2002)
Jennifer Lopez
“Weapon of Choice” (2001)
Fatboy Slim
“Lying is the Most Fun” (2006)
Panic at the Disco
#1: “Parisian Goldfish” (2008)
Flying Lotus
We know, we know, you’ve never heard of Flying Lotus but let us introduce you to his amazing foray into the music video genre. This video features two middle aged people strangely dancing to a beat and then things escalate quickly. Before long both people are completely nude with rotoscoped animation covering their naughty bits. If you thought things couldn’t get any worse, you would be dead wrong. Directed by surrealist comedian Eric Wareheim, this video is no surprise if you are familiar with the comic’s other work.
