Number 10: Analyze This (1995)

In this hit comedy, he plays a mob boss dealing with sudden anxiety attacks and an inability to kill people. Dealing with this problem, he intimidates a terrified psychiatrist, played by Billy Crystal, into helping him come to grips with his emotions.

Number 9: The Deer Hunter (1978)

One of several young factory workers, he joins his friends when they enlist to fight in Vietnam. Falling in the hands of the Vietcong, they are brought to a prison camp and forced to play Russian roulette against each other.

Number 8: The Untouchables (1987)

In the role of Chicago crime boss Al Capone, he is brought to justice by an unconventional police team during the mob wars of the 1920s. Wielding a baseball bat against his own men, the actor brought a memorable sense of ruthlessness to the legendary crime lord’s portrayal.

With the help of his cruel strongman Nicky, played by Joe Pesci, they maintain order within the establishment. However, Ace soon falls in love with a hustler named Ginger, and is targeted for assassination when the mob’s casino empire falls apart.

Number 5: Cape Fear (1991)

Nominated for an Academy Award, De Niro takes on the role of the film’s antagonist; a frightening, tattoo-covered, bible-quoting, psychopathic rapist. Released from prison after completing his 14-year sentence, he immediately begins stalking and toying with his old public defender that intentionally chose to cost him the case.

Number 4: Goodfellas (1990)

De Niro and Joe Pesci play two gangsters who have set their sights higher than small time crimes. Joining with Ray Liotta, and his band of small time criminals, they pull off a heist. However, they soon decide to kill off everyone involved in order to eliminate potential witnesses and climb the ranks of organized crime.

Number 3: Raging Bull (1980)

In this biographical drama, De Niro stars as an emotionally self-destructive boxer. Using his uncontrollable temper and violent tendencies, he makes it to the top of the ring. However, he sacrifices his everyday life and relationships in the process.

Winning an Oscar for best supporting actor, De Niro portrays a young Vito Corleone in 1920s New York. Interestingly, he earned overwhelming acclaim without even having to speak one word of English.

In his most iconic role, De Niro plays a mentally unstable Vietnam War veteran that works as nighttime cab driver. Noticing decadence and sleaze all around him, he decides to embrace his urge to lash out, all while attempting to save a teenager from her life of prostitution.
