#10: Stopping the Mind Control Network “Inside” (2016)
People have been discussing the meaning behind this ambiguous secret ending since it was first discovered. Inside, a game hailed as a spiritual successor to Playdead’s previous puzzle-platformer “Limbo,” follows a boy who uses mind control to free a blob full of humanoid parts from its prison, all while controlling human zombies along the way. However, if you achieve the alternate ending by deactivating all the light orbs in the bunkers, you unlock a secret area, where the boy seemingly pulls the plug on the mind control network, but then also becomes a mindless zombie himself, What could it mean? No one can be sure, but everyone’s got a theory.
#9: The Fate of Aqua, Terra, and Ventus “Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep” (2010)

In this prequel set 10 years before to the first “Kingdom Hearts”, We follow apprentice keyblade-wielders Aqua, Terra, and Ventus in an attempt to vanquish Xenahort. While the normal ending finds see’s Aqua sacrifice herself into the realm of darkness order to save Terra, the hidden ending sets us up for Kingdom Hearts III. Players must finish the game in proud or critical mode in order to unlock this 11 minute long ending. While we can’t cover everything, we do find that Aqua survived and meets up with Ansem inside the Realm of Darkness, and that King Mickey is sending Sora on a new adventure to save the team.

You know the drill by now: Armed conflict, dethroning a despot, yadda yadda yadda. Far Cry 4 takes this formula and turns it on its head. When your character arrives in Kyrat to spread his dead mother’s ashes, he is taken prisoner by Pagan Min who kills your guide in front of you and leaves. At this point, players can choose to fall into the same pattern of grab a gun, shoot first, and ask questions later. However, if you stave off your blood thirst for 15 minutes by waiting in Min’s mansion, he returns. Min then takes you place your mother’s ashes, revealing more of the story, and finally offering you a chance “to shoot some goddamn guns.”
#7: Ending D “NieR” (2010)

Square Enix is known for their secret endings, and this one just might take the cake. The player controls Nier in his quest to save his daughter from the plague-like illness called the Black Scrawl. Spoiler alert: He can’t. Or can he? If you play through the game a total of three times, you are faced with a choice to end his daughter’s suffering or sacrifice his life. Doing the latter will not only make the characters forget Nier, but your console will forget you, as it erases your Nier save data and prevents you from using the same character name ever again. Talk about a fourth wall break.
#6: Joker Rises “Batman: Arkham City” (2011)
The good guys are always supposed to win in video games, but the opposite tends to make for some good secret endings. In a game where Batman is already a prisoner, the odds are already stacked against the caped crusader to stop the Joker and TYGER Security from controlling Gotham City. However, when Batman is downed late in the game, a player-controlled Catwoman has a moral choice to make: Either come to Batman’s aid or take the money and run. If you are able to completely callous your heart and choose the latter, you find out that Batman dies, and Joker has taken over Gotham. But hey, at least you got paid, right?

Believe it or not, secret endings are nothing new. Square managed to kickstart the craze in its mammoth Super Nintendo RPG “Chrono Trigger” with a whopping grand total of thirteen endings. However, the most elusive ending comes at the beginning of a New Game+, which is available upon beating the game while also completing all side quests. At the start of the game, you take the right teleporter to jump straight to Lavos, the final boss. Defeat him, and you get a hilarious developer’s room filled with zany fourth wall breaks from the developers themselves. Because who doesn’t like hearing Japanese game developers talk about American baseball and football?

Let’s face it; this freeware adventure game captivated everyone with its simplistic graphical design and control scheme. But it was the story about an amnesiac robo-soldier named Quote that truly drew everyone in, with no part of it being more captivating than its elusive true ending. To get it, players must make a plethora of correct choices over the course of the game, including saving Curly Brace early so that she can later jog Quote’s memory. Once done, Quote goes into the Prefab Building, which allows him access to the hellish Blood Stained Sanctuary, which sets the stage for this epic ending in which Quote and CurlyB race kill Ballos and escape with Balrog.
#3: Usurpation of Fire “Dark Souls III” (2016)
If you’ve made it to any ending of a “Dark Souls” game, give yourself a pat on the back. If you’ve made it to the best ending of “Dark Souls 3,” you might want to add a day at the spa followed by a double-layered cake to that reward. To get the ending, you must complete a laundry list of tasks, which include one wedding and several funerals in a very specific order. Upon completion, you will be rewarded with an epic ending where your character becomes the new Lord of fire.
#2: Perfect Ending “Final Fantasy X-2” (2003)

Yeah, we know. Square Enix’s first direct sequel for their illustrious “Final Fantasy” series could’ve been a lot better and had a lot less fan service. But hear us out, because “Final Fantasy X-2” tied off the “Final Fantasy X” storyline in an amazing way with their 100% perfect ending. The only catch is you have to execute a series of arbitrary button presses in various places. By arbitrary, we mean to say that Google is your friend, because the game itself gives you absolutely no prompt on where to perform these inputs. If you manage to succeed, you’ll find that Yuna has reunited with Tidus in Zanarkand. So that means Tidus is alive, maybe? Possibly? Eh, still awesome. This total troll ending may have actually been prophetic to what the internet would become: a shrine for worshipping our Shiba Inu Doge overlords. While the “Silent Hill” series has always been a darker franchise taking on disturbing subject matter, this ending is the polar opposite of that, as it leaves you staring blankly at the screen. As it turns out, while this dastardly dog may seem all cute and cuddly, he has been the puppet master who has orchestrated every event in the game. We would have never guessed.
