Top 10 Smartest Batman Villains
VOICE OVER: Rudolph Strong
Very clever... Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most cunning and intellectual adversaries that the Dark Knight has faced in his crime fighting career. Our countdown includes villains Bane, The Joker, Scarecrow and more!

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the most cunning and intellectual adversaries that the Dark Knight has faced in his crime fighting career. We’ll be excluding rogues that are more commonly associated with other heroes however, such as Lex Luthor. Did we miss any of Batman’s brainy bad guys? Let us know in the comments below!

#10: Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn might seem like she's all about unpredictable chaos, but you shouldn’t let her scatterbrained persona fool you. Lest you forget she was once Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a respected and brilliant psychiatrist. Before she fell under the Joker’s influence, Harley was an expert in psychology and criminology, using her skills to delve into people's deepest fears and desires. And, despite her zany outbursts and erratic behavior, she's also proven herself a sharp tactician and skilled escapologist. However, Harley’s biggest vulnerability continues to be her deep-seated “Stockholm syndrome,” which often clouds her judgment and keeps her from using her high IQ to its full potential.

#9: Mr. Freeze

A tragic figure in his own right, Dr. Victor Fries, AKA Mr. Freeze, is driven by his love for his wife Nora. His obsession with finding a cure for her terminal illness has driven him to develop some fairly impressive technology. You see, as a scientific genius specializing in cryogenics, he’s crafted everything from freeze rays to entire suits designed to keep him alive at sub-zero temperatures – all while enhancing his strength and durability. It’s no wonder that he’s come close to putting Batman on ice on more than one occasion! Freeze’s genius-level intellect and gifted scientific mind make him one of the Caped Crusader’s most intellectually challenging adversaries.

#8: The Penguin

Generally portly in appearance, Oswald Cobblepot may not have superpowers or possess the most impressive high-tech gadgets, but he compensates with sheer cunning and business acumen. In fact, his craftiness, not to mention ambition, has made him one of Gotham's top crime lords. As The Penguin, Oswald runs an empire built on illegal enterprises, all while maintaining a veneer of respectability. He’s also smart enough to know that he can’t match Batman on a physical level. In order to stay out of direct confrontation, Oswald expertly manipulates others to do his dirty work. As shrewd on the streets as he is in a business meeting, The Penguin is definitely not to be underestimated!

#7: Scarecrow

Another Doctor in the DC Universe, Jonathan Crane leverages his vast understanding of fear as an academic psychologist to exploit people's deepest frights and terrors against them. By creating hallucinations through his “fear gas,” Crane, as the Scarecrow, manipulates his victims – keeping them completely off balance. In fact, the villainous mastermind’s potent fear toxins are capable of affecting Batman himself. This makes him one of the most dangerous foes “The Bat” has ever faced. Add in a brilliant understanding of chemistry and the intellect to pull off elaborate schemes, and Scarecrow proves that he’s so smart, it’s actually scary.

#6: Poison Ivy

With a Ph.D. in botany, Pamela Isley possesses unparalleled knowledge within botanical sciences – especially as it relates to plant toxins. The red-headed seductress uses her smarts to weaponize plants against those who stand in her way, this as she protects nature above all else. Her deep understanding of plant life and extensive research into toxicology has given her the ability to create deadly poisons and even control the minds of those who come into contact with her flora. Ivy's intellect extends beyond science though, as she has also proved a skilled strategist and fighter. We suppose it also helps that she can instantaneously transform any environment into a battlefield…

#5: The Joker

None of Batman’s foes epitomize unpredictable genius quite like The Joker. The Clown Prince of Crime is commonly written off as being nothing more than a deranged madman, but we’re here to tell you that there lies a frighteningly sharp mind beneath his maniacal exterior. For one, The Joker has orchestrated his share of chaotic plans – often leaving a sizable trail of destruction behind. These deadly events are meticulously thought-out, with nearly every detail considered to ensure maximum impact (and confusion) for his adversaries. Joker is also known for his strategic mind games, manipulation, and reinvention. Plus, he created those lethal “Joker toxins” by himself. We’d say the term “crazy like a fox” more than fits this Arkham mainstay.

#4: Bane

Bane isn’t just a brute force; his exceptional intellect and strategic prowess have made him one of Batman's most formidable foes. Raised in the harsh conditions of Peña Duro prison and empowered by the Venom serum, Bane has developed keen tactical awareness. His cerebral brilliance includes methodically studying his enemy’s weaknesses. And by executing complex, multi-layered plans, he is the master at breaking his opponents - cutting them down inch by inch. Heck, he once orchestrated a successful assault that left the Dark Knight temporarily crippled. A true threat both physically and mentally, if anyone can outplay the world’s greatest detective, it’s Bane!

#3: Ra's al Ghul

Leader of the League of Assassins, Ra's al Ghul commands vast resources accumulated across lifetimes. Yep, thanks to Ra’s being granted Lazarus Pit immortality, he possesses a wealth of knowledge spanning multiple disciplines throughout history, literature, science, and warfare. It all adds up in making him an incredibly formidable opponent, especially for the Batman. And by challenging the Caped Crusader both physically and intellectually, Ra’s provides a philosophical counterpoint to the vigilante’s methods - ultimately making him an unparalleled threat. Afterall, how do you compete against a man who literally knows the secrets of the world?

#2: The Riddler

With an intellect that is said to border on superhuman, Edward Nigma is obsessed with puzzles. And so, the criminal with a penchant for the color green, creates complex conundrums that challenge and test the intellectual limits of everyone around him - including himself. Using these brainteasers to commit crimes, Nigma can’t help but leave cryptic clues behind to goad authorities and match wits with Batman. It's a battle of knowledge where every clue is a taunt, and every solution a victory for the Riddler's ego. And so, with his most dangerous weapon being his brain, The Riddler has been able to outsmart Batman on several occasions – something not many can lay claim to.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are some honorable mentions.

Two Face

From shrewd District Attorney to cunning criminal mastermind, Harvey Dent is doubly smart.

Mad Hatter

An extremely deluded genius, but a genius, nonetheless.

Hush

A brain surgeon and master strategist that wraps up his adversaries in mystery.

#1: Hugo Strange

The definition of an “evil genius,” Dr. Hugo Strange is a psychiatrist and scientist who has an uncanny ability to analyze and predict human behavior. He’s also completely mad! Utilizing his profound psychological insight and vast knowledge to craft intricate and dark plots against his foes, Strange’s twisted brilliance knows no bounds. Plus, the mad doctor not only matches wits with the likes of Batman, but is also able to challenge his enemies physically - this through his many monstrous creations. Hugo’s mastering of genetic manipulation has aided him well, allowing his handiwork to bloody their hands on his behalf. An exceptional intellect in the most dangerous of ways, Hugo Strange undoubtably stands as Batman’s smartest villain.
