#10: Henry Gives Young Clare a List of Dates
“The Time Traveler's Wife” (2009)


Henry DeTamble started time traveling when he was just a kid. But since he had no control over his abilities, hopping around time ended up being more of a detriment than a life saver. However, Henry’s life radically changed when he met his wife. When Clare and Henry met as adults, he found out that she had known an older version of him almost her whole life. He then discovers that she had a written log of his visits. When he got old enough to go back and meet her, he gave her the log. These actions ensured that they would definitely spend lots of time together.

#9: Noah Never Stops Sending Letters
“The Notebook” (2004)


Allie and Noah’s connection was undeniable from the very first moment they met. That’s why it was so heart wrenching to see her believe he no longer loved her when she broke up with him. Although Noah tried to reach her every day for an entire year, the letters never reached Allie due to her mom’s intervention. But although Noah never got any responses, he constantly kept writing. His persistence paid off when Allie finally got to read all of Noah’s letters. Thanks to his determination, she didn’t question that they were meant to be together in the end.

#8: Joel & Clementine Give It Another Try
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004)


In “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind”, there’s a company that can erase bad memories from a person’s mind. Joel and Clementine both decide to use the service so they can forget all about their not so great relationship. But even without their memories, they were both drawn back to each other again. Although they eventually learn about how bad they were together, they still recognize that their connection was strong. They decide to throw caution to the wind and start their relationship again. While it’s debatable if they’ll last, the couple taught us a wise lesson. Their story showed us that the only way to live and love fully is to remember the good and bad memories that shaped us.

#7: Iris Turns Jasper Down
“The Holiday” (2006)


We definitely understand the desire to get away from an ex. But Iris took avoidance to the extreme when she went to an entirely different continent after her former boyfriend got engaged. Although she was halfway across the world, she still found herself falling for his charm. After conversing with the engaged man from a distance, he shows up at her doorstep. But Iris makes the smart realization that this grand gesture isn’t healthy. By kicking him to the curb, she recognized that she deserves to be with someone who is completely available and wouldn’t cheat.

#6: Bridget Stands up for Herself
“Bridget Jones's Diary” (2001)


While Daniel is undeniably charming, he wasn’t the greatest boss or boyfriend. However, Bridget is still willing to give him a try. She brushes aside a few big red flags before he really crosses the line. When Bridget swings by Daniel’s apartment after a disappointing party, she discovers a woman there. Bridget immediately leaves the apartment and Daniel behind. After he makes a horrible apology, she decides to stop working for him too. Bridget’s choice to get out of that bad situation was bold and brilliant. Bridget showed incredible growth and emotional strength.

#5: Jenny Goes for Her Dream Job
“Someone Great” (2019)


When we go into a romance movie, we usually expect to see a couple defy the odds and get together. But “Someone Great” was more about choosing yourself than someone else. Jenny initially felt like her life was completely intertwined with her college sweetheart. But that changed when she got a dream job that was across the country. When he makes it clear he doesn’t want to follow her or go long distance, she chooses to follow her dreams anyway. Jenny showed us that stepping away from a longtime love can be painful. However, we think that the choice to pursue her dream at the cost of her relationship was a smart and healthy choice.

#4: Will Goes Back to April's Apartment
“Definitely, Maybe” (2008)


Sometimes it takes an outside source to see clearly what is right in front of you. When Maya asks her dad Will how he met her mom, he launches into a big story about three women he fell for. Will really lights up whenever he talks about April. Although April isn’t Maya’s mom, the kid pushes her dad to go after the woman from his stories. While Will is doubtful April will want to give him a chance, he decides to go to her door anyway. It’s not long before the two are in each other’s arms again. Maya’s encouragement was just what Will needed to reunite with his greatest love.

#3: Rachel Plays Mahjong With Eleanor
“Crazy Rich Asians” (2018)


Eleanor took the over-protective mother-in-law trope to a new level in “Crazy Rich Asians”. She was consistently ruthless to her son’s girlfriend Rachel. And despite Nick’s best efforts, he couldn’t get Eleanor to be any more welcoming. After Rachel was so heavily mistreated, we honestly expected her to run away from Nick and his family. But she squared her shoulders and confronted Eleanor in a mahjong parlor. Although Rachel could’ve won, she throws the game to make a strong point about how she is in control of her fate. Her scary calm and boldness makes Eleanor realize how wrong she’s been. Thanks to one game of mahjong, Rachel finally got the blessing to join Nick’s family.

#2: Gus Leaves a Note
“The Fault in Our Stars” (2014)


While a lot of couples might not want to talk about death, Gus and Hazel were different. Their experiences with cancer made them determined to write their eulogies while they were still alive. Although Gus could’ve gone ahead and written one for Hazel on his own, he tries to get her favorite author to help.. Hazel later gets to read the message that Gus delivered to the writer. During this emotional scene, we hear him say some beautiful and heart wrenching words about Hazel. While getting in touch a writer Hazel adored was a great idea, Gus honestly didn’t need any help writing a fantastic eulogy.

“500 Days of Summer” (2009)


From the very start of their fling, Summer repeatedly made it clear that she did not want a serious relationship with Tom. But he doesn’t fully accept her clearly communicated feelings. Tom thought he could find a way to change her mind over time. However, Summer eventually decides to stick to her original instincts and ends their fling. While Tom is initially heartbroken, he comes to realize that they probably wouldn’t have been happy together long term. Both he and Summer go on to find love and success elsewhere. Her brilliant and simple idea to move on allowed them to discover where they were really meant to be and who they were supposed to be with.
