Top 10 SNL Sketches That Left Us Speechless

Top 10 SNL Sketches That Left Us Speechless
VOICE OVER: Kirsten Ria Squibb WRITTEN BY: Andy Hammersmith
These "SNL" sketches left us all speechless. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the best examples of sketches that defy expectations, wow us, and/or confuse us in a good or bad way. Our countdown includes "Meatballs," "Wario," "Evil Boss," and more!

#10: “Evil Boss”

This sketch probably wouldn’t get made today. Unafraid to play the villain, Will Ferrell stars as a maniacal boss who takes out his anger on employees. This ramps up from hilarious confrontations to shocking violence by the end. All the while, Pierce Brosnan’s interviewee watches in horror. How can you not react in some way to a scene so chaotic? Ferrell’s performance hits a fever pitch as he attacks people and battles another man to the death. After much stabbing and screaming, this surprising skit finds its way to a bloody finale.

#9: “Wario”

How can you possibly describe this sketch? Nobody could’ve dreamed up a scenario where Elon Musk wears a Wario costume on “SNL.” You might spend half of this scene with your mouth agape as Nintendo characters speak in a courtroom. Musk’s accent is ridiculous and his acting leaves something to be desired. It’s ridiculous from one moment to the next, with an inconceivable plot about Mario’s murder. Even the musician Grimes shows up as Princess Peach. You need to see it to believe it and then you’ll likely double check if you’re still awake.

#8: “Farewell Mr. Bunting”

While this starts as an accurate parody of “Dead Poets Society,” it goes to a much darker place. Fred Armisen plays a version of Robin Williams’ character who prepares to leave. Students try to support him, but one stands too close to the ceiling fan. His head goes flying off in a hilarious turn of events. The skit becomes a horror film of sorts, ranking high among the most violent “SNL” pieces ever. Everyone’s reaction and the copious amounts of blood only make it better. You might be laughing or wincing, but either way, you’ll probably be speechless.

#7: “Meet Your Second Wife”

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler play hosts of a funny and unexpected game show. With the power to see the future, the presenters reveal the future wives of each contestant. This draws a huge reaction as the audience watches young girls walk out. The ingenious concept corners each man, but also defies logic in wonderful ways. It’s fantastic writing that catches you off guard. Even when you think you can guess the final twist, the writers manage to shock you even more. The skit really makes you think while also functioning like great satire.

#6: “World’s Most Evil Invention”

This might be the darkest and most twisted sketch in recent “SNL” history. During a contest for evil inventions, everything seems normal until Dwayne Johnson’s Roy shows up. His robot has such a disgusting power that it even freaks out the other villains. Walking a thin line between funny and too far, this skit could easily have been a complete trainwreck. Johnson’s subdued performance and the other reactions make this scene much better. Even with the bold writing, you might be too creeped out to keep watching. This doesn’t even include the last-minute plug for White Castle burgers. The whole thing plays out with some of the show’s most controversial material ever.

#5: “Super Showcase Spokesmodels”

Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph were born to be in sketches together, bringing both talent and an exuberant energy to everything. This has never been more evident than in the exciting “Super Showcase Spokesmodels.” They both try to reveal prizes until they break character. After that happens, the laughter never stops in an entertaining series of mistakes. Bill Hader can’t hide his joyful reactions to the disaster. From selling chickens to golf carts, the actresses chuckle their way through all kinds of sales pitches. They even throw in some incredible accents for more entertainment value.

#4: “Meatballs”

A romantic evening seems to be going well, but nobody could’ve expected it to end this way. Sarah Sherman’s character reveals that she has meatballs growing out of her. This isn’t even the strangest part of the sketch, because the growths can also sing. The psychedelic scene enters another dimension where all the little beef products dwell. Everything spirals out of control, forcing you to confront your deepest fears and fantasies about food. You also get to watch as Oscar Isaac plays one of the many meatballs. It’s nothing if not an adventure from start to finish.

#3: “Potato Chip”

Do not under any circumstances eat another man’s potato chips. This is a rule by which Will Forte’s character seems to live his life. Jason Sudeikis’ applicant decides that he’s going to ruin that in an inexplicable sketch. Everyone in the skit, including Blake Lively, plays this script like it’s deadly serious. You have to admire their dedication to the material regardless of it making sense. There’s also the fact that Sudeikis spits into Forte’s hand, adding a gross-out element to this unique premise. Did we mention that this all takes place at a NASA office? We can only imagine how this imaginative idea came to be.

#2: “Colonel Angus Comes Home”

It’s funny to think that this entire sketch revolves around one joke. There’s plenty of innuendo to go around, with Christopher Walken’s character arriving to make it all better. Walken’s Colonel Angus is an old military man who provokes strong reactions from everyone. It’s a little surprising that the edgy sketch made it past the censors, but the clever writing certainly deserves some credit. Everyone’s Southern accents and their ability to keep a straight face should also be commended. The scene could be considered super raunchy for “SNL” standards, but it’s also endlessly entertaining.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

“Scooby-Doo”
The Classic Show Takes a Violent Turn after a Face Rips Off

“Fart Face”
Bill Hader, Will Forte, & Josh Brolin Call Each Other Names in a Silly & Unexpected Skit

“Sitcom Reboot”
John Mulaney’s Unsavory Character Explains His Strange TV Show in a Surprising Sketch

#1: “Djesus Uncrossed”

In the style of Quentin Tarantino, this funny sketch finds a way to give Jesus Christ a revenge story. Christoph Waltz stars as a much more aggressive version of the religious leader. With Waltz’s skilled performance, the skit takes an over-the-top view of the New Testament. It’s also a little shocking that the writers dive head-first into such a sacred subject. Putting weapons in Jesus’ hands, the hilarious premise puts him in the midst of Tarantino homages from “Pulp Fiction” to “Django Unchained.” It’s a crazy, bold, and violent scene that you can’t forget.
