Top 10 Songs About Cheating

Top 10 Songs About Cheating
VOICE OVER: Matt Campbell
Script Written by Allen-Michael Harber.

You might want to wash that lipstick off your collar. Join http://www.WatchMojo.com as we count down our picks for the top 10 songs about cheating. For this list we're counting down songs that have to do with cheating on your significant other or the effects of it. And since it seems that many singers out there have known this hardship, we are limiting our list to one song per artist.

Special thanks to our users Alex Guzman, Shawn Mark, aldqbigsquare and Tortilla for submitting the idea on our Suggestion Tool at http://www.WatchMojo.comsuggest

#10: “Screaming Infidelities” (2002)
Dashboard Confessional

Starting off our list is this somber song about moving on after your relationship that has ended through infidelity. Using a soft guitar and softer vocals, we are given a sense of longing, especially if you live in the same place where all your memories reside. From clinging to the sheets and finding small remnants of the former partner, the singer is surrounded by his sadness and loneliness. This song does come with a silver lining as it earned Dashboard Confessional some chart success and a MTV Video Music Award.

#9: “What Goes Around...Comes Around” (2006)
Justin Timberlake

Our favourite former N’SYNC member is no stranger to heartbreak, releasing the 2002classic“Cry Me a River” in response to his breakup with pop star Britney Spears. Many consider “What Goes Around...Comes Around” a sequel to that song as it covers the same themes of betrayal. The music video, which features Scarlett Johansson as the cheatinggirlfriend, only adds to the song’s themes of infidelity. Becoming one of Timberlake’s signature tracks, we almost hope Justin doesn’t get cheated on again. Although it would probably make for the perfect trilogy.

#8: “Creep” (1994)
TLC

This song takes on a different side of cheating. When the narrator finds out that her man has been cheating on her, she responds by doing some cheating of her own in order to gain some much needed affection.. Despite the song being one of their most popular, the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez was actually against the release of Creep, saying that a woman should leave a cheating man, not cheat as well. However releasing the track was most likely for the best, as it earned the band two Grammy nominations.

#7: “Unfaithful” (2006)
Rihanna

Not every song has to be about a man being the cheater. In “Unfaithful”, Rihanna plays the part of the one who is cheating and keeping it a secret, however she is regretful of her actions. This ballad demonstrates that everyone can feel weak and succumb to certain desires and actions. Reflecting on her mistake, Rihanna states that she doesn’t want to take her significant other’s life away by cheating. It makes us ponder how we would react in a similar situation.

#6: “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)” (2001)
Blu Cantrell

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. When the narrator of this revenge song catches her husband cheating she decides to ruin him financially. Oops, there goes all his clothes and his money. Pretty soon he’s left with nothing. This song is a call to women to create as much damage as they can when their man steps out of bounds, and we can’t blame them. Just make sure you hide your credit cards if you plan on committing infidelity.

#5: “The Thunder Rolls” (1991)
Garth Brooks

In this dark take on the subject matter, Garth Brooks uses lightning and thunder as symbolism for the different emotions and actions that the characters are going through. The thunder rolls as the husband is driving home in a rain storm. When the wife catches the smell of an unfamiliar perfume you can see the lightning flashing in her. There’s even an unreleased third verse, played only at live shows, that uses thunder to describe the sound of a gun.

#4: “Jolene” (1973)
Dolly Parton

Just because you can take someone’s man doesn’t mean you should, and that’s the point Dolly Parton is trying to address to a woman she believes is trying to steal her husband. In the song Jolene is a beautiful woman who her husband seems to have the hots for. She admits that Jolene has the ability to take her husband but she begs her not to, since he’s all she’s got. The track is actually based on a real life situation where Dolly’s husband flirted with another woman shortly after their marriage.

#3: “Heard It Through the Grapevine” (1968)
Marvin Gaye

No matter how careful you are there is always a chance you are going to get caught, especially when word gets out. In this classic tune, Marvin finds out from his friend that his lady has been sneaking around with another man. After hearing the rumors he goes through the stages of heartbreak and grief, not wanting to believe that his woman would do this to him. It’s never stated explicitly if she really is cheating, but that’s what we heard through the grapevine.

#2: “Before He Cheats” (2006)
Carrie Underwood

As with our previous entries about revenge, this song is about sending a message only this time that message is sent with a Louisville slugger. Carrie Underwood’s former boyfriend is off fraternizing with another woman, meanwhile she’s trashing his truck. During her song she is also describing the woman who clearly is some random tramp, as she puts it. Honestly who would want to cheat on Carrie Underwood? Obviously it’s the man who now has to pay for vehicle repairs.
Before we accuse our top pick of infidelity, let’s look at a few honorable mentions.

“Sacrilege” (2013)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs

“Wake Up Call” (2007)
Maroon 5

“You Know I’m No Good” (2007)
Amy Winehouse

“Mr. Brightside” (2003)
The Killers

“Suspicious Minds” (1968)
Elvis Presley

#1: “It Wasn’t Me” (2000)
Shaggy feat. Rik Rok

Okay so you’ve been caught in the act and your girlfriend knows it was you, what do you do? If you said deny, that’s exactly the same sort of thinking behind this tune. In this tune Rik Rok is desperately asking his friend what he should do when his girl confronts him with some hard evidence. Maybe if you denied it enough she would start to believe you, but she clearly caught you on camera. There’s just no getting out of this one.
