#10: DUM-Series Pit Droid
“Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” (1999)
These easy-to-compact droids are also quick-to-help mechanics! Pit Droids are integral to pod racing, as they make sure these flimsy vehicles stay together long enough to finish a match. While they are mechanically inclined, they also have a tendency to fight one another… frequently. Sure, these guys are annoying, but they are also lovable! While they have always only been background characters, they are definitely memorable as well.
#9: B1 Battle Droid
“Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace” (1999)
They may be easy to kill but they’re even easier to produce, hence why Battle Droids come in hordes! Gungans, Jedi, and Republican troops have had their chances to mow down armies of B1 battle droids. They’re not the most intelligently programmed droids in the series, nor anywhere near as tough as the Trade Federation’s Droidekas and the Confederacy of Independent Systems’ beefed up B2 Super Battle Droids. But the Battle Droids are notorious for their dimwitted banter, and maybe that’s why it’s so much fun to watch them be blown apart.
#8: T3-M4
“Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” (2003); “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords” (2004)
Sure, the “Knights of the Old Republic” video game was set years before the original trilogy, but what’s a “Star Wars” story without a snarky, yet helpful astromech droid? Originally built for crime lord Davik Kang, T3-M4 ultimately became Darth Revan’s personal droid and helped him and his crew constantly escape in the knick of time. He incessantly repairs the crew’s starship, the Ebon Hawk. While he only boops and whirrs, T3-M4 is exceptionally adventurous and equally outspoken.
#7: EV-9D9 (e.v.-99)
“Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi” (1983)
EV-9D9 is Jabba the Hutt’s personal droid dungeon master. She gives newly arrived droids tasks and, when they inevitably fail, she makes sure they’re tortured. That’s right, this droid’s job is to torture other droids! EV-9D9 is impatient, bossy, and terribly sadistic. She gave C-3PO the unfortunate job of being Jabba’s personal translator while allowing R2-D2 to coast by as a cocktail waiter. And while droid-on-droid violence may not be okay, it’s eerily entertaining.
#6: C1-10P
“Star Wars Rebels” (2014-)
Also known as Chopper, this C1 model is one of the newest beloved Star Wars’ astromech droids! Introduced in the animated TV series “Star WarsRebels,” he isn’t afraid to hog the spotlight. Chopper is known for being pushy and kind of selfish and he frequently ends up in peculiar situations, like when he was temporarily owned by Lando Calrissian because of a friend’s gambling debt. Chopper is nothing like R2-D2, and unashamedly so, though that astromech droid’s original concept art was actually the basis for Chopper’s design.
#5: Probe Droid
“Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back” (1980)
These voice-less probots were the ultimate spies! Emitting little more than a whirring sound, these Imperial probe droids scouted for the Rebel base on Hoth and found it. Han and Chewie famously distracted one in a game of cat-and-mouse. However, after Han shot it with his blaster the Viper probe droid self-destructed and immediately revealed its location to the Empire. While menacingly sneaky, their black coloring made them pretty easy to spot on Hoth’s snowy landscape.
#4: IG-88
“Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back” (1980)
IG-88 is a droid bounty hunter to be reckoned with! In “Empire Strikes Back,” IG-88 competed head-to-head with other bounty hunters to capture Han Solo for Darth Vader, however it was Boba Fett that ultimately caught Solo. During this time, the 4th and last model of the droid line, known as IG-88D, fought Dash Rendar and, unfortunately, didn’t fare well against him. Perhaps more surprising for fans though is that this bounty hunter also has a history with R2-D2 and C-3PO, as the droids crossed his path during a bounty mission. IG-88 is violent, deadly, and disturbingly likeable.
#3: HK-47
“Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” (2003); “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords” (2004)
The HK in this assassin droid’s name means Hunter-Killer, which is exactly what he excels at. This assassin droid is so good at his programmed job that he notoriously killed many former masters. Originally owned by Darth Revan, he coincidentally ended up back in Darth Revan’s company again after both had their memories wiped. This jerk-of-a-droid is infamous for calling all organisms "meatbags." HK-47 was instantly popular following his debut in the “Knights of the Old Republic” game that he was included in the sequel as an unlockable character.
#2: C-3PO
“Star Wars” franchise (1977-)
This worrywart and golden protocol droid knows more than 6 million forms of communication and thus, frequently finds himself acting as an interpreter. While C-3PO is often the brunt of jokes, and can come across as stuck-up, he means well. He even occasionally gets the upper hand, such as when an entire planet of Ewoks thought he was a god. For somebody who hates unpredictability and the irrational, 3PO is by far the most unintentionally adventurous protocol droid in the galaxy. He’s also a shining example of wonderfully programmed human-cyborg relations!
Before we unveil our number one pick, here are some honorable mentions:
- MSE-6 [aka Mouse Droid]
“Star Wars” original trilogy (1977-83)
- 2-1B
“Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back” (1980); “Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the
Jedi” (1983)
- Buzz Droid
“Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” (2005)
- PROXY
“Star Wars: The Force Unleashed” (2008)
#1: R2-D2
“Star Wars” franchise (1977-)
This little astromech droid has seen his fair share of action. While R2 has a great sense of humor, he’s incredibly resilient and not afraid to stand up for himself. Unbelievably loyal to his friends, R2-D2 has risked everything to help the most noble of causes, including sneaking stolen Death Star plans across the galaxy completely unbeknownst to his best friend, C-3PO. R2 and 3PO have been in every single “Star Wars” movie thus far, however, R2 is by far the most beloved droid in the entire “Star Wars” universe.
