Top 10 Strangest Anime

Anime is a broad term that encompasses shows from every genre imaginable, often mixing and matching standard tropes to create some really unique and awesome series. There are also some decent anime that are weird as hell, not bad, but weird. Whether it's a robo member, or soda cans that turn into gorgeous women who battle, these are the best of the series that make you go WTF?
#10: “Speed Grapher” (2005)
Sometimes when a photographer is down on his luck, he takes on some, shall we say, odd jobs. This story follows war photographer Tatsumi Saiga who is granted the power to destroy anything with his photos by a young hostess at the Roppongi fetish club. Yeah, you heard that right. While the concept may seem justifiably silly, its likable characters and entertaining storyline makes this one worth the short 23 episode viewing. If you are looking for a unique series, you found it.
#9: “Dead Leaves” (2004)
“Dead Leaves” is a sci-fi anime feature that follows criminals Retro and Pandy as they try to recover their memories through ridiculous and explosive hijinks. Hijinks that land them in a prison on the moon surrounded by butt snakes and drill penises. “Dead Leaves” cartoonish yet fluid animation style lets us know to not take it too seriously, as Retro and Pandy’s attempts to break out of prison lead to some of the craziest scenes ever.
#8: “Midori Days” (2004)
Anime takes a unique approach to romance. Taking the helm in this romantic comedy is sub-par high school student Seiji Sawamura, who is loved by afar from the quiet and shy Midori Kasugano. Oh, and Seiji has a demonic right hand, which transforms into a miniature Midori after Midori wishes to be with him forever. This series is as strange as they come, but produces genuine laughs due to the sheer mayhem our two characters create for themselves.
#7: “Moyashimon” Series (2007-12)
What would you do with the ability to communicate with microscopic organisms? If you said agriculture then you are boring, but should relate really well with first year college student Tadayasu Sawaki. Sawaki can actually communicate with and observe bacteria, which leads to some surprisingly interesting conversations. “Moyashimon” takes a comedic approach to science and is definitely a really niche series. Grab some sake and relax.
#6: “Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan” (2005-07)
Every wonder what it would feel like to be consistently beaten to death by an angel? Let's ask Sakura Kusakabe, the protagonist of “Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan”. We watch Sakura's daily life and his encounters with the assassin angel Dokuro Mitsukai, which often result in his death. But don’t worry, death isn’t the handicap it used to be; as in the future Sakura accidentally creates immortality among humans, which kicks in at the age of twelve. But, God does not approve and we watch Sakura get bludgeoned to death over and over again.
#5: “FLCL” (2000-01)
Consisting of only six short, stand-alone episodes, Fooly Cooly tells the story of Naota Nandaba and his life after a mysterious “N.O. portal” is formed by head after he gets hit by a car, resuscitated and then beat up with a blue guitar. What is a N.O. Portal? A gateway in which giant robots from the Medical Mechanica Corporation emerge, obviously. Confused? Watch more anime.
#4: “Bobobo-bo-bo-bobo” (2003-05)
Never have we seen a series so dedicated to the power of hair. We join Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo as he uses the power of his nose hair to rebel against the tyrannical Tsuru Tsurulina IV, who tries to capture innocent people’s hair. Beyond all of the ridiculousness that is Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo there lies a decent shonen anime series that is full of laughs. Whether it be the constant fourth wall breaking or the witty dialogue, this is the perfect strange anime for you. BoBo!
#3: “Yakitate!! Japan” (2004-06)
While anime may have some great looking food, there aren’t that many cooking anime. “Yakitate! Japan” is the obvious exception, as viewers watch as child Kazuma Azuma strives to make the best bread in all of Japan. As a staple in anime, Kazuma has a special power, in this case “Solar Hands” allowing his hands to warm up, which he uses to help bake his bread. The series became very popular upon release, as it depicts the food culture of Japan and the overall power of food.
#2: “Hetalia: Axis Powers” (2009-13)
In this series we get to see what it would look like if you took all of a countries stereotypes and personified them. "Hetalia: Axis Powers" does just that, putting characters named after and based off their respective countries into short skits. As the title suggests, the show focuses mostly on the interaction between the Axis powers of WWII, Italy, Germany and Japan. We also have appearances from over forty other quirky characters representing countries like America, France and Russia. With so many amusing interactions between these nations, it makes us wonder… where's Canada?
Before our top pick makes things even more confusing, here are a few honorable mentions.
“Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere” (2011-12)
“Sleeping With Hinako” (2010)
“Lucky Star” (2007-08, 13)
#1: “Akikan!” (2009)
“Akikan!” follows high schooler Kakeru Daichi and his discovery of Akikans, soda cans that… turn into girls who... must fight each other to survive. Sure why not? At least the series doesn’t take itself too seriously, picture magical girls, that are actually soda cans and… it still makes no sense. Created to determine what type of metal is most suitable for use as soda cans because lab testing is for nerds, this series has a lot of laughs combined with some pretty crazy action.
