Top 10 Strong Female Vocalists Who Don't Get Enough Credit
#10: Rita Ora
Rita Ora has gotten bad press from the day she stepped into the limelight. Deemed a Rihanna wannabe almost immediately, Ora was pushed into the other famous singer’s shadow. Because of this, it’s been difficult for Rita to truly show off her vocal abilities. But this lady has a set of pipes on her that she uses to their fullest extent in all of her songs. So, let's forget about her issues with the media for a minute and just give her a listen.
#9: Miley Cyrus
We all know that with a popular country singer as a dad, this young woman was born into the world of music. And while in her Disney days she was seen as innocent and cute, in more recent years, she has quickly changed her public persona. Now, Miley Cyrus definitely has her own brand that is just about as far as you can get from “Hannah Montana”. But have we forgotten that as the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus she has also inherited his vocal talent? We knew it once; perhaps we just need another reminder. Because she certainly has the voice!
#8: Kesha
Since she’s stepped into the spotlight, Kesha has been notorious for many reasons. Initially, the main one was her apparent party girl lifestyle which was put on full display, both through her lyrics and in the tabloids. In more recent years, she has been one of the leading forces in the #MeToo campaign with her lawsuit against her own producer. However, throughout all of this, Kesha’s vocal capabilities haven’t been credited nearly as much as they should have been. Until the release of her 2017 album, “Rainbow”, that is. With much of the autotuning finally stripped away, we can truly hear her voice for what it is. And is it ever raw and gorgeous.
#7: JoJo
Of all the entries on this list, this lady’s star has probably faded the most since she first broke onto the scene. Hopefully that will change, because even at an early age, her soulful voice brought some catchy singles to the mainstream. Never fret though; as of 2018, she is still making music, be it as a primary artist or a featured one. And that voice of hers is still as amazing as ever. In fact, her 2017 release of her song, “Wonder Woman,” has established a newfound love for this killer songstress.
#6: Nicole Scherzinger
Remember Eden’s Crush? The girl band brought together by the competition show, “Popstars”? That‘s where Nicole Scherzinger got her start and first showed off her singing chops. She really stepped out on the scene when she was the lead member of the pop group, The Pussycat Dolls. Their killer dance moves - especially Scherzinger’s - were what people focused on, taking center stage and possibly even distracting from Nicole’s beautiful voice. Fortunately, she would go on to release her own music, showcasing that same vocal ability that got her started in the business.
#5: Demi Lovato
Demi first truly captured our hearts on the Disney Channel’s “Camp Rock” as Mitchie Torres. Since those days though, Lovato’s voice has only gotten stronger, giving more and more power behind every line. With singles like “Sorry Not Sorry” and “Confident”, Lovato showed not only her vocal prowess but also her willingness to try different styles of music. Citing vocal greats like Christina Aguilera and Aretha Franklin as major influences, it’s no surprise Demi can belt it out with the best of them.
#4: Lady Gaga
From the day Lady Gaga broke the mold of music in the late 2010s with “Just Dance” and “Poker Face”, she has been making jaws drop and throwing down killer tracks on the regular. Now known for her unconventional and provocative work, Gaga knows how to make a scene wherever she goes, and she’s certainly not afraid to. But let’s not forget that underneath all of that crazy is a crazy beautiful voice. We might have discovered it a few years after she put out her debut album, but this lady can belt out a note with the best of them.
#3: Tori Kelly
Out of all of the entries on this list, Tori Kelly is the newest to fame. Despite that though, she has been making quite a name for herself with some darn catchy singles. She has variety to her style, singing both pop and the occasional country. And with this fame, she has also put her voice on full display for the world to appreciate. Honestly, we can’t wait to hear the next song this young woman puts out. Let’s be honest, there are very few people who could have us bopping to a Nationwide Insurance jingle.
#2: Florence Welch
Honestly, we’re not sure why this woman’s voice doesn’t get enough credit. Whether it’s in a catchy tune about a horrific relationship like “Kiss with a Fist” or with an uplifting but tear-inducing song like “Shake It Out”, Florence’s ethereal vocals are exposed in each and every one of her band’s songs. Even in concert, when stripped of any potential digital editing, you can hear her raw talent burst through. From her first album to her most recent and beyond, we will forever be intoxicated by her exquisite voice.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
Bebe Rexha
Emeli Sande
Sara Bareilles
#1: Jessie J
Jessie J is probably known best for the controversy surrounding her bisexuality as well as her catchy single, “Price Tag”, which was played extensively on the radio when it first came out. But that doesn’t mean we should downplay the importance of her lyrics and certainly not her vocal talent. Honestly though, this lady has some pipes that could blow a lot of popular female singers out of the water. Her 2018 single “Queen” showed off her airy, floating voice combined with a powerful message. It’s time this queen got a little more recognition.
