Top 10 Superhero Costumes That Actors Hated Wearing

Scarlett Johansson may seem like the perfect fit for the sleek superspy, but as it turns out, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses for this actress. On top of having to fight numerous bad guys and fend off ogling fanboys, Johansson also had to contend with her own uncomfortable suit. According to her, the whole thing was skintight and she couldn’t breathe very well, making it extremely hot on set. Not exactly pleasant when your character has to do… this: [clip of Black widow fighting bad guys]. Hopefully Marvel will make the suit more comfortable, especially if that standalone Black Widow movie ever gets off the ground.

Seeing how Olivia Munn is a comic book fan, she was one of the main forces pushing to have the Psylocke suit in “X-Men: Apocalypse” as accurate as possible to its source material. She may have regretted pushing for that, though. In interviews, Munn has stated that the final suit was a nightmare to get on. Munn reportedly needed the help of two assistants, as well as a ton of lube just to get into the one-piece costume. It earned the praise of fans, though, so it was worth it! We guess…

Stepping into the shoes of the beloved web-slinger is no easy task, and many praised Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of everyone’s friendly neighborhood hero. But Garfield had his fair share of trials on set. For one thing, the mask was reportedly rather tough to see out of. Second of all, spending 12 hours in a skintight onesie? That’s enough to make anyone self-conscious, and Garfield was no exception. Also, if you look closely, you’ll notice the suit doesn’t have a zipper. Okay, not too closely. That one should be pretty self-explanatory.

Heeding the advice of former Dark Knight Christian Bale, Affleck made damn sure that there was a zipper in his suit. So what’s the big deal? Well, for most of the Batman scenes, nothing really. But when you see Gotham’s Knight step into his armored mechanical bat-suit, that’s when Affleck got a little peeved. Most of the shooting required Affleck to be wearing a Motion Capture suit, which he basically described as dotted pyjamas. It was reportedly difficult to portray such an iconic badass when he felt like he looked so stupid, calling it “the most humiliating, ridiculous thing in the world.”

Although grateful for the revitalization of his career, Paul Bettany found the costume for the android Vision a bit of a handful. Every day, between the suit and makeup, it took almost 4 hours to become camera ready. Bettany noted he had to work on his inner Zen just to get through the day. His work paid off, though, as Vision pops on screen, and Bettany noted in interviews that if the going ever got really tough, he’d just imagine all the actors who’d love to be in his position!

Chadwick Boseman had several of the same complaints of his suit that Scarlett Johansson did of her own. But as tough as Black Widow’s suit was, at least she could breathe. Boseman has stated in interviews that as cool as the suit looks, the mask cut off most of his air supply, making the stunts he was doing extremely difficult. This compounded with the incredible heat inside the suit meant things were not pleasant for shooting hard stunts in the baking heat. And to think, he was only a supporting playing in “Captain America: Civil War.” Boseman will be taking center stage in the solo “Black Panther” movie, meaning he’ll have to spend even more time in this uncomfortable suit.

Fans of the character know well that Harley Quinn has a style of her own, and that style was captured perfectly in Margot Robbie’s “Suicide Squad” wardrobe. This had its ups and downs for Robbie when it came to playing the character. On the one hand, as she pointed out, dressing up in the wacky style was a lot of fun! On the other, the costume doesn’t leave much to the imagination, and it left her feeling self-conscious. Maybe Robbie would’ve been happier with a traditional harlequin costume like in “Batman: The Animated Series.”

Malin Akerman was originally thrilled to don Silk Spectre II’s costume, remarking at how sexy it looked. Then she tried it on. For one thing, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, the whole thing is pretty much latex and is extremely form fitting. So when it came to doing stunts in the suit, not only would it get really hot, it would also start to smell. It’s a sad reality that us mortals never consider, but most superhero costumes are probably gross… This was no exception. At least her costume wasn’t as revealing as Doctor Manhattan’s.

The sheer nature of Green Lantern’s outfit meant it would be challenging to say the least, to make it practically. In order to pull it off, the entire thing had to be made using CG effects. This meant Ryan Reynolds, like his Batman counterpart, was stuck in a motion capture suit for most of the shoot – a process that he despised. Reynolds eventually got a shot at redemption and didn’t miss when he got a chance to play his favorite superhero, Deadpool. He also didn’t hesitate to fire a couple shots at the old Green Lantern costume.

No honorable mentions this time around, so without any further ado:

Rebecca Romijn was the first to play Mystique on screen, and she wasn’t too thrilled with the costume either: after all, she basically had to spend 8 hours– which eventually got reduced to 3 hours– getting make-up plastered all over her body so she could basically be naked on set. Fun right? Jennifer Lawrence had the same problem, but hold on, it get’s worse! Lawrence had an allergic reaction to the make-up used on her, causing the crew to have to build her a suit to wear. Taking this into consideration, it isn’t surprising that Lawrence decided to walk away from the Mystique role following “X-Men: Apocalypse.”
