Top 10 Superhero Teams
#10: Green Lantern Corps
This intergalactic force has members in all sectors of the universe to monitor and prevent criminal activity. Using an ancient power drawn from the emotional spectrum, the lanterns are almost omnipotent. First appearing in 1959’s Showcase #22, the Green Lantern Corps has been protecting the universe ever since with the use of their Green rings, spawning countless animated adventures, and a live action feature.
#9: Guardians of the Galaxy
On the fringe of the mainstream Marvel superhero teams, this space travelling band of vigilantes solves problems before they happen. Team leader Star-Lord opted to form a squad of unusual super-powered heroes, which includes a gun totting raccoon and tree-like alien. Though the Guardians are a relatively new team, they have been well received by fans and garnered it’s own live action feature.
#8: Birds of Prey
Founded by original Batgirl Barbara Gordon and Black Canary, this team of vivacious super vixens is all about girl power. Following Barb’s run-in with the joker, she was left paralyzed and decided to form a group capable of working behind the scenes. First appearing in back in 1995, the team became popular enough to get its own TV series.
#7: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
This Victorian era superhero team is comprised of legendary literary figures from that time. The individuals, from Dr. Jekyll to the Invisible Man, are charged by the British government to uncover a sprawling criminal conspiracy. The 2003 live-action adaptation notwithstanding, the team was well received by fans and critics alike.
#6: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Named after renaissance masters and trained in the art of the ninja by a giant rat, these four mutated teen turtles raise the bar for crime-fighting weirdness. Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the turtles were first a pretty lethal team, until they were given their child-friendly animated series in 1987. Since then, they have had several different series and various film adaptations.
#5: Teen Titans
A younger and hipper version of the Justice League, the Titans made their debut back in 1964. Comprised of the League’s teenaged sidekicks, Dick Grayson became the Titan’s analogue to Batman and operated as its head, leading them in to battle against lower profile villains. As a group of adolescents, The Teen Titans have since become fodder for child friendly animated programming.
#4: The Fantastic Four
The family that fights crime together stays together. Belted with mutagenic cosmic rays, this space-exploring quartet was thrown into the superhero business back in 1961, helping make super-powered teams trendy. In the years since, they have crossed paths with most of Marvel’s other heroes, and appeared in various cartoons and live action features. While they’re powers compliment each other, they are often at odds when it comes to family matters.
#3: The Justice League
What do you get when you throw the world’s most powerful superheroes together to fight crime? Exactly what you’d expect. The League is made up of countless super heroes who are each in charge of their own sector of the Earth to defend. When greater threats come along, the team pools its resources and works as a team. They first appeared in 1960’s The Brave and the Bold #28, before crossing into all forms of media.
#2: The Avengers
A relatively under-appreciated superhero team until the Marvel Cinematic Universe elevated their status to pop culture icons, the Avengers continue to grow in popularity with each live action instalment. Made up of dissimilar and often completely mismatched superheroes, the appeal of the world’s mightiest heroes is their ability to put their differences aside and work together and save the day.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honourable mentions:
The Authority
The Defenders
The Legion of Super-Heroes
#1: The X-Men
Led by the telepathic Professor X and arguably the most recognizable team on this list, the X-Men made their debut back in 1963. With several blockbuster films and dozens of TV incarnations under their belt, it’s easy to forget the team’s humble beginnings as an analogy for the battle for human equality. With a well-balanced roster of superpowers, and countless iconic heroes and villains, the mutant’s popularity continues to grow.
