Top 10 The Bachelor Moments That Haven't Aged Well
#10: Olivia Caridi’s Treatment
“The Bachelor” (Season 20)
All eyes on Olivia! That was certainly the mentality Olivia Caridi had during Ben Higgins’ season of “The Bachelor” – or that’s what producers wanted you to think. There were certainly many reasons Olivia was singled out as villainous – she acted differently around the other women than around Ben, and her one-liners were off the charts – not to mention her very memorable, very wide mouth. But after Ben’s season, Olivia opened up about the less-than-accurate edit she received. She got a lot of undeserved hate online – so much so that she asked the show to pay for her mental health expenses. Seems reasonable to us. Luckily, Caridi is doing much better now – and seems to have made amends with the franchise.
#9: Jake and Vienna’s Public Break-Up
“The Bachelor” (Season 14)
As soon as Jake proposed to Vienna, we all knew they were going to make quite the contentious duo. But hey, the heart wants what the heart wants, right? Wrong. While they may have had “lightning hot” physical chemistry, the two went their separate ways just months after the finale. The franchise decided to sit them down for an interview – and it did not go well. The two yelled, called each other names and said some of the nastiest things we’ve ever heard for the entirety of the interview. Chris Harrison, who moderated, later said he didn’t expect the pair to get as angry as they did. But, perhaps the break-up was way too fresh to show it on national television? Just a thought.
#8: The Soulja Boy Music Video
“The Bachelorette” (Season 9)
Our eyes! Our ears! We never wanted to see any of these boys crank anything. During Desiree’s season, she took one of her group dates to meet rapper Soulja Boy and make a video. But little did the contestants know fans got a sneak peek of the date before it even aired. Someone leaked the Soulja Boy/Bachelorette collab online and it was … embarrassing to say the least. Desiree, boys – we love you, but your rapping skills leave something to be desired. Looking back on the video now, given the show’s diversity issues, it’s a little tough to watch a group of white men rap about the love of a white woman. It’s a no from us, dog.
#7: Leo’s Blow Up
“Bachelor in Paradise” (Season 5)
Leo left Becca Kufrin’s season relatively well-liked and was poised to go far in paradise. But, before that season of Bachelor of Paradise graced our screens, Leo was accused of sexual harassment by numerous women. While that was enough to sour him in our book, his behavior in paradise proved he is far from the romance hero of our dreams. Leo set his sights on Kendall – who was then with the beloved Grocery Store Joe – and led her on while he kissed another girl. When Kendall found out, Leo blew up at everyone in sight. He screamed at Kendall, he threw a drink in Joe’s face, and continued his aggressive antics online after he left. No rose for you, Leo.
#6: The Reaction to Kaitlyn Sleeping With Nick
“The Bachelorette” (Season 11)
Kaitlyn Bristowe’s season of the Bachelorette was memorable for many reasons – not least of all, resident runner-up Nick Viall showing up in the middle. The Nick drama, however, did not end there. While in Ireland, Kaitlyn and Nick slept together before fantasy suites – a big “no-no” in the Bachelor universe. This could have been a moment for the franchise to address a double standard – the idea that men can sleep around and still remain “good,” but women can’t. But everything, from the editing choices to the way Kaitlyn’s guilt about the act is handled, screamed purity politics and misogyny. The situation was mishandled even for its time of airing, but today, we’re sure that most of Bachelor Nation would come to Kaitlyn’s defense.
#5: Chad Johnson
“The Bachelorette” (Season 12)
Where do we even begin with Chad? He made his first appearance on Jojo’s season, and from the beginning, everything about him screamed toxic alpha male. He got physical with other suitors and was misogynistic towards Jojo – needless to say, he was sent home. In a decision that now seems ridiculous, the franchise thought fans would want to see more of Chad in paradise – and things could not have gone more poorly. He was verbally and sometimes physically abusive towards everyone on the beach, even making fun of contestant Sarah Herron for having one arm. He left with a bang by telling off Chris Harrison – and has continued his pursuit of being the worst person alive. Good riddance.
#4: Casting Lee
“The Bachelorette” (Season 13)
When Rachel Lindsay was cast as the franchise’s first Black lead, it seemed as if the show was starting to pave a way forward for a more diverse take on love. But, casting Lee Garrett proved to be a major set back. Mid way through the season, racist tweets were discovered from Lee’s past. But even if those hadn’t come to light, his behavior on screen was more than enough to see his true colors. Lee antagonized Kenny, a Black contestant, calling him “aggressive” multiple times and accusing him of using “the race card.” Luckily, Rachel soon sent Lee home, but the fact that she even had to deal with such a mess in the first place was a horrible look for the franchise.
#3: Two Bachelorettes
“The Bachelorette” (Season 11)
You might not remember, but Kaitlyn Bristowe’s season was almost Britt Nilsson’s season. And that brings us to maybe the worst season premiere in history – the one with two bachelorettes. Both women would start off the season, but at the end of the first night, the men would decide which one would stay. When the decision was announced, neither woman was happy about the prospect – and why would they be? Being the Bachelorette is supposed to be exciting, and it’s nerve racking enough without worrying if you’ll make the better first impression. It takes the power right out of the woman’s hands. The night unfolded as awkwardly as you might expect – and we truly hope this never happens again.
#2: Jubilee’s Treatment on Ben’s Season
“The Bachelor” (Season 20)
The Bachelor franchise has a difficult history with race, to say the least. And Jubilee Sharpe’s time on Ben Higgins’ season is a perfect example of how much the show can go wrong. When Jubilee arrived on the season, she was quickly singled out by most of the other women for reasons that felt racially motivated. From snide comments that she wasn’t like a “soccer mom,” to disbelief that Ben could be into someone like her, the hate kept coming. On the Women Tell All, Jubilee talked about how she felt the women would be kind towards her to her face, but act differently behind her back. We’re always team Jubilee, but this is not one of the show’s finer moments.
#1: Colton Underwood and The Fence Jump
“The Bachelor” (Season 23)
Ah, the infamous fence jump. This much-anticipated episode of Colton Underwood’s season definitely paid off at the time. Cassie Randolph had just left the show – and in heartbreak, Colton vaulted over the fence to try and get away from cameras. Eventually, Cassie came back and the pair decided to date instead of getting engaged. But, in light of recent revelations about their relationship, the moment plays differently now. Three months after the couple split up, Cassie filed a restraining order. Among other things, Cassie claimed Colton put a tracking device on her car. Knowing this, and knowing how reluctant she seemed to get married in the first place, the fence jump just doesn’t seem as momentous as it once did.
