Top 10 Things The Internet Needs To Stop Glorifying

Top 10 Things The Internet Needs To Stop Glorifying
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
Alright guys, seriously, just stop. For this list, we'll be looking at the things we believe the internet seriously needs to stop putting on such a high pedestal. These are the things which the internet seemingly can't stop talking about or fawning over despite the subject not deserving it. We aren't saying that these things are bad or unenjoyable. We're just saying that the internet may seem a little too obsessed with these given topics. Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 10 Things the Internet Needs to Stop Glorifying.

#10: Unhealthy Eating Habits

While staying in shape and going to the gym certainly has its perks, the internet seemingly can’t stop talking about how much they just love unhealthy junk food. For example, jokes are often made towards unhealthy eating and refusing to stay in shape. Seriously, just say something like, “Screw the gym, gonna eat an entire pizza alone tonight,” and watch the likes come flooding in. On top of that, the internet seems to have a weird fascination with several unhealthy foods, like the aforementioned pizza, bacon, and Nutella, among many, many others. We get it, internet, you like junk food. Now let’s go on a diet.

#9: Forced and/or Weird Shippings

No, we’re not talking about shipping weird things across state to your buddy. “Shipping” has taken on a new definition in the land of the internet to mean ideal relationships or couples, usually within a fictional universe. While we appreciate people taking a liking to their favorite characters and stories, there’s no denying that shipping can get weird. Tons of fan art and fan fiction is available online depicting these shipped couples, and some of them are… odd, to say the least. Things get even weirder when real celebrities are shipped. Can we stop playing Cupid already?

#8: React Videos

React videos have taken the internet by storm in recent years, and we honestly don’t understand why. It can be entertaining watching other people react to something that’s scary, shocking, or – in the case of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” trailer – both. But we’ve gotten to the point where almost everything on YouTube has a reaction video, including WatchMojo lists! It was cool when we saw videos of people responding to The Red Wedding, but we didn’t need them for literally every “Game of Thrones” moment. This gets even worse when the reactions are so obviously over-exaggerated to get attention and views. Is watching the trailer for the new Marvel movie on your computer REALLY that exciting?

#7: Jake Paul

Most YouTubers are perfectly fine and entertaining. And then there’s YouTubers like Jake Paul, who give the entertainment medium a bad name. Paul rose to prominence on Vine before starring in a Disney show called “Bizaardvark.” Since he was let go from the show, Paul has become a bit of a nuisance, hosting loud parties at his rented mansion and generally being an annoyance to his neighbors. While many may dislike Paul, others absolutely adore him, as large crowds of fans gather around his house, which only adds to his neighbors’ ire. Please guys, can we stop glorifying this guy? For the sake of his neighbors, at least?

#6: Stupid Viral Challenges

Social media can be a beautiful thing. It keeps us all connected in ways we wouldn’t have even dreamed of only a few decades ago, and it can help spread the word for some honorable causes. But it also leads to incredibly dumb things. Many “challenges” have gone viral over the years, and many of them are just stupid ways to hurt or kill yourself. These include the Hot Water Challenge, which is when one friend pours boiling water on another, or the Fire Challenge, which is when, yes, you set yourself on fire. And we all remember how much chaos the “Bird Box” challenge caused. Take off the blindfold and see the light!

#5: Avocado

The first signs of this meme came about in October of 2016, when newspaper columnist Bernard Salt declared that millennials were wasting their money on avocado and fancy toast. This was further fueled in May 2017, when Australian millionaire Tim Gurner said that millennials couldn’t afford houses due to buying “smashed avocado for $19 and four coffees at $4 each.” This caused a ton of outrage on the internet, especially with millennials, and avocados have become a bit of a running gag. It was kind of funny for a while, but we’re pretty much beating a dead horse at this point.

#4: Popping Giant Pimples

You come home from a hard day’s work and decide to relax. What do you do? Have a beer? Watch the latest episode of your favorite TV show? Watch someone pop their pimple and gaze in amazement at all the pus spewing out? You may laugh, but pimple/cyst/whatever popping videos are rapidly growing in popularity, and we can’t fathom why. Maybe it’s the satisfaction of seeing some bodily harm remedied? Maybe some get a sick thrill from it? Regardless of the reason, the internet can’t get enough of these pus-filled videos, and whether you enjoy them or not, there’s no denying that they’re pretty gross.

#3: Rotten Tomatoes

For the two of you who may not know, Rotten Tomatoes is a website that aggregates film reviews and gives the movie a percentage rating based on how many critics enjoyed it. It’s a great tool to have, but people on the internet seem to take Rotten Tomatoes as the be-all-end-all in determining which movies are good. Serious fights break out over social media regarding a movie’s score, and some people place far too much emphasis on the number itself rather than the content of the reviews. Rotten Tomatoes was even influenced to change its audience rating system after “Captain Marvel” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” were reportedly review bombed prior to their releases. You did this to yourself, internet.

#2: The Kardashians

We find it absolutely mind-boggling how the Kardashians have continued to remain relevant throughout all these years. Sure, hating on the Kardashians may be a tired joke by now, but the point still stands that this family remains incredibly popular for no good reason. It seems as if at least one of them is in the news every week, mostly because people place far too much emphasis and attention on their daily lives. It’s getting a little creepy and we implore you to stop keeping up with the Kardashians already.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few dishonorable mentions.

Barb from “Stranger Things”
Bottle Flips
The Illuminati
Hating on the “Game of Thrones” Finale

#1: Social Media “Influencers”

Social media influencers are those people with a large number of followers who essentially promote various brands due to their popularity. Are these people really worth glorifying, though? Sure, they have a lot of followers, but who cares? That doesn’t mean that they’ll buy your product. Some people claim that these influencers often fail because the product is usually bad and not worth marketing. Another reason is because the influencer promotes it in such a way that it comes across as a commercial, thus falling on disinterested ears. We glorify these influencers far too much, and it seems as if some analysts have finally had enough of the experiment.
