Top 10 Things You Missed in Loki Episode 3

Top 10 Things You Missed in Loki Episode 3
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Andrew Tejada
The action really starts to heat up in episode 3 of this Marvel TV series. For this list, we'll be looking at the Easter Eggs, comic book references, and MCU callbacks you might've missed in this episode of the Disney+ series. Our countdown includes C-20 & Mobius Are From Our Times, Sylvie's Never Been to the TVA, Loki Opened the Door to Frog Thor, and more!

#10: C-20 & Mobius Are From Our Times

Thanks to Sylvie, we’re positive that every member of the TVA is a variant that was plucked from the timeline. We have reasons to believe that Mobius and Hunter C-20 both lived in our era. Mobius likes drinking Josta, an energy drink that was introduced in 1995. He also has an obsession with jet skis created in that same decade. As for C-20, she first appears in episode 3 while Hayley Kiyoko’s “Demons” is playing. Although that particular single was released in 2019, C-20 could’ve been listening to it in early 2020. That may be why she has a 20 on her helmet: it may represent the year she was taken from. The evidence points to Mobius and C-20 being spirited away from modern times.

#9: The Bartender Seems Familiar With Asgardian Customs

When Loki needs to unwind during a tense mission, he decides to do a little singing and a whole lot of drinking. He requests a new drink by smashing his glass and screaming “(insert broll here)” Loki’s brother “Thor '' also attempted this seemingly rude custom when he first came to Earth. However, Jane quickly calls out the god of thunder and he’s left without a beverage. But when Loki does it on the planet Lamentis, the bartender immediately starts pouring him a new drink. We guess she’s had an Asgardian or two smash a glass over the years. Considering how messy things got for the doomed planet, at least she won't have to worry about cleaning it up.

#8: Two of the Guards Make Up One Sly “Aliens” Reference

At first glance, the main two guards that speak to Loki and Sylvie don't stand out. But that all changes at the end of the episode. In the credits, the two guards are named Private Hudson and Corporal Hicks. This has to be a direct reference to a couple of characters that share the same names and ranks in the second aliens film. Both sets of characters are forced to fight beings that are much more powerful than them. While Hicks and Hudson ultimately don't survive their franchise, the two guards on Lamentis might’ve made it. Hopefully, Loki didn’t throw them out of a window.

#7: Loki Opened the Door to Frog Thor

While Loki is talking about the magic he learned from his mother, he mentions that he can transfigure objects into frogs. This innocent amphibious reference is a subtle callback to a bizarre Thor storyline. In the comics, Loki turns the god of thunder into a frog for multiple issues as part of a larger scheme to claim the throne. But it backfires when Frog Thor arrives just in time to stop his brother’s wicked plans. If Frigga taught the MCU’s version of Loki how to turn people into frogs, Thor better watch his back. The former prince of Asgard could become the second Disney royal to become an amphibian.

#6: Wait A Minute Sylvie's Postman

We never expected Loki and Sylvie to sit and talk about the princes and princesses they’ve romanced. During their surprising conversation, Sylvie mentions she has a close relationship with a postman. It turns out there was a mail person in the comics that coincidentally also messed around with time. In one “Fantastic Four” story, the team’s mailman, Willie Lumpkin, throws history off course after he travels into the past. It’s later revealed that a villain named Tempus set up the postman on purpose to break the timeline. Although the late great Stan Lee played mailman Willie Lumpkin in 2005’s “Fantastic Four”, the character hasn’t appeared in the MCU. Could the character be introduced as Sylvie’s former flame later on?

#5: Sylvie’s Broken Headpiece Could Hint at a Sad Story

One of the most notable things about Sylvie’s outfit is the fact that one of her horns is broken. This small detail could hint at a tense comic moment. During the “Loki: Agent of Asgard” comics, Thor gets enraged after uncovering a horrifying truth about his brother’s true identity. The enraged god of thunder proceeds to hit Loki so hard that the one of the horns on the god of mischief’s headpiece cracks in half. Loki continues to wear the broken helmet for the rest of the series. If Sylvie’s like her comic counterpart, she may have gotten into a heated fight with Thor in the time she’s from. The fractured headpiece could be a reminder of the broken relationship between the siblings.

#4: Sylvie’s Never Been to the TVA

Loki learned fairly quickly that his magic was useless in the TVA. Sylvie learns the same harsh truth when she tries and fails to enchant the guard. Judging by the shocked look on her face, she was completely unaware of the no magic rule. This seems to suggest that Sylvie has never actually stepped foot inside of the organization. But if that’s the case, how did she learn about the TVA? Mobius suggests early on that ordinary people only learn about the agency when they step off the path of the timeline. But Sylvie had to learn enough about the TVA to plot against them without ever visiting. Maybe there’s someone on the inside of the agency that’s helping her rebel against the timekeepers.

#3: Frigga Might Have Something to Do With Sylvie Being a Variant

Even though Loki committed some truly despicable acts, he treasured his mom Frigga because she showed him understanding and taught him magic. But that version of Frigga seems to be absent from Sylvie’s timeline. When talking about her past, the variant mentions she learned magic on her own and doesn’t have the same warm memories Loki has towards his mom. This suggests that Frigga didn’t exist or had a different personality in Sylvie’s time. But without the Frigga we know, the timeline would’ve gone haywire. She gave her life to protect Jane in Asgard and helped Thor rally in “Endgame”. Frigga’s altered personality or absence could’ve been enough to break the timeline and send Sylvie down the path to becoming a variant.

#2: There Could Be Future Guardians of the Galaxy on Lamentis

Both Loki and Sylvie had trouble making friends on the doomed planet of Lamentis. But since they’re stuck there for now, they still may have a chance to befriend two notable MCU characters. In the comics, the magnificent Moondragon and powerful Phyla-Vell spend time living together as a couple on the planet. Both women end up joining the “Guardians of the Galaxy” at one point in their careers. Loki and Sylvie might be the bridge that connects two potential heroines to Star-Lord’s famous team. Judging by the apocalyptic state of the planet, there’s not a whole lot of time left to introduce Moondragon and Phyla-Vell before Lamentis is completely destroyed.

#1: Loki Gave Sylvie Her Powers in the Comics

The villainous variant we’ve been following since the beginning officially identifies herself as Sylvie in the third episode. She shares the name with a comic character that also has a bad streak. After Sylvie Lushton, A.K.A. Enchantress mysteriously gained magical powers, she tried to use her tremendous abilities to help people. But she later discovered that Loki gave her powers and eventually spiraled into a life of villainy and tragedy. Like her comic counterpart, the show’s Sylvie is self trained, can manipulate minds and has committed a lot of crimes. Although the characters origins look different, Sylvie still could take on the name Enchantress in the future.
