Welcome to WatchMojo and today we’re counting down our picks for drama and/or thriller movies fan theories that were confirmed by the film itself or were confirmed by the filmmakers. We can confirm there will be spoilers ahead, so this is your warning.
If you ever sit down and watch the films of Quentin Tarantino you might start to recognize some recurring elements such as Red Apple cigarettes, Big Kahuna Burger and even characters with the same last name. Naturally, fans started to comment how these films must all be connected. In a 2017 interview Tarantino confirmed that all of his movies are, in fact, part of a shared universe. To be more precise, there are 2 universes, one dubbed the “realer than real universe”, featuring characters from “Pulp Fiction” and “Reservoir Dogs”, etc. The other is the “movie universe” consisting of movies like “Kill Bill” and “From Dusk till Dawn” that characters from the realer universe would see.
Ernst Stavro Blofeld was the main villain in early Bond films. He was the head of the organisation SPECTRE that terrorized the world and it’s up to James Bond to save the day. However, due to a lengthy copyright case, the character and the SPECTRE organisation disappeared from the franchise until the case was settled in 2006. So when the title of 24th film of the series was revealed as “Spectre” and Christoph Waltz was announced as part of the cast, it didn’t take long for people to start putting two and two together and surmise that Waltz’s character Franz Oberhauser is Blofeld.
At first glance it would seem “Unbreakable” and “Split” don’t have much in common other than both being written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Despite “Split” being about a man, Kevin, with 23 identities due to his dissociative identity disorder, fans couldn’t help but notice that one of those identities could be superhuman. It’s hinted at in the trailer and given Shyamalan is known for twist endings, speculation soon began form that “Split” could be connected to “Unbreakable”. It would be confirmed to be the case at the end of the movie when Bruce Willis’ character, David Dunn, appears.
When the Bond franchise was rebooted with 2006’s “Casino Royale”, characters like Moneypenny and Q were nowhere to be found. By the time “Skyfall” is announced and the cast is revealed, actress Naomi Harris was set to play Eve, an MI6 agent who works with Bond. Almost immediately people started speculating that Eve was in fact Moneypenny. Of course, Harris, for her part, denied that she would be portraying the character. So, imagine everyone’s surprise once “Skyfall” was finally released and we find out that Eve’s last name is Moneypenny and retires from field work becoming a secretary by the film’s end.
Cast infighting aside, as that’s a different topic for a different day, many people were able to figure out the ending to this movie. It appears to be set in the 1950s and while it’s common to romanticise the past, things were a little too idyllic here. Not to mention there’s a lot of visual imagery to suggest that things aren’t what they appear to be. It was really no surprise that once we get to the end of the film, it turns out that everything is a simulation.
This neo-noir film centers around the lives of the three con artists Roy, his mother, Lilly, and his girlfriend, Myra. As you might guess there’s money and betrayal involved. The film ends with a confrontation between Roy and Lilly over a stash of cash and in the ensuing argument, Lilly ends up killing Roy. As she drives off into the night, a man can be seen running across the street. Fans started to wonder if that’s Roy, meaning he didn’t actually die. When producer Martin Scorsese was asked if it was Roy, he responded with, “sure, why not”.
There are several fan theories surrounding “Get Out”, but one of the more intriguing is the idea that the film is connected to “Being John Malkovich”. The two movies have similar plots in that it’s possible to transfer your consciousness to take over another person’s body. In “John Malkovich” you can only really do it with the aforementioned John Malkovich but by the time we get to “Get Out”, it’s possible to take over anyone’s body. When the theory was presented to “Get Out” director Jordan Peele, he loved it and said as far as he’s concerned, it’s true.
