Top 10 Times Tom Hiddleston Did an Interview in Another Language
#10: “The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show” (2019-)
Italian
In 2022, Tom Hiddelston visited the BBC Radio 2 early morning show to chat with host Zoe Ball about his TV miniseries “The Essex Serpent” and to tease season two of “Loki.” After a bit of promotion, the host prompts the performer to speak Italian. Although Hiddleston admits that he doesn’t speak much, he gives it a valiant effort. He even included a shout out to Eurovision Song contestant Sam Ryder. It wasn’t the first time that Hiddleston showed off his grasp of Italian for the cameras. At the 2012 premiere of “The Avengers” in Rome, with a reporter’s encouragement, he happily launched into his rendition of the classic Italian song “Volare.” As his Italian fans would say, “Splendido!”
#9: Singing on the Red Carpet in Moscow (MOSS-koh)
Russian
Actors that star in feature films often get to travel the world and attend red carpet events in many different countries. While Hiddleston was enjoying this perk, he stopped by Moscow for the premiere of “The Avengers”. He took that opportunity to show off both his knowledge of Russian and his singing voice. When an MTV Russia reporter approaches him, he eagerly belts out a line from an old Soviet folk song. “Antoshka” is about a troublesome little boy who doesn’t want to do any work. The lyric translates, “Little Anton, Little Anton, let’s go dig potatoes.” Although Hiddleston’s pronunciation isn’t exactly perfect, we absolutely love his enthusiasm.
#8: “Cielito Lindo” (1882)
Spanish
During a 2017 appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Hiddleston recounted the time he was serenaded by fans at the Mexico premiere of “Kong: Skull Island”. The song was known as “Cielito Lindo”. Although it literally means “beautiful sky,” it can translate roughly to “lovely sweetheart.” When Kimmel sidekick Guillermo jumps in to help with the lyrics, he earns a bit of ribbing from Jimmy for his trouble. Hiddleston proceeds to tell Guillermo in Spanish that he hasn’t forgotten the gorilla suit he wore in a previous appearance. Fortunately, it looks like there are no hard feelings. Overall, this funny interview gave us a great idea of how familiar Hiddleston is with a romance language.
#7: Winning Over the Crowd
Mandarin Chinese
While attending a Beijing press conference to promote “Thor: The Dark World,” Tom shared a few prepared lines with the crowd. For those who don’t speak Chinese, he said, “It’s a pleasure to come to China. I love you. Thank you.” His pronunciation was considered to be pretty good. Despite only speaking a few words, he had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand. The fact that he took the time to learn how to speak Mandarin properly really shows his love for his fans. And this wasn’t the only time Tom got a chance to impress a Chinese audience with his language skills. He also starred in a pretty weird POV commercial where he reminds you to take your morning vitamin.
#6: Loki Es Guapo
Spanish
It doesn’t take long for Hiddleston to start speaking Spanish during his interview with Dulce Osuna. (DOOL-say ohSOOnuh) When the reporter tells him that Loki has millions of fans all over the world, the performer says it’s a surprise to him since Loki is a villain. And after Osuna suggests that it might be because Loki is handsome, the modest Hiddleston downplays the compliment. This wasn’t the first time the performer charmed Osuna with his Spanish. In an interview at D23 Expo earlier that year, he talked about “The Dark World” and his role voicing a young James Hook in “The Pirate Fairy.” Osuna had the same question for him that we’ve been wondering ourselves: Why do we love seeing Tom as a villain?
#5: Votre Avenger Préféré [AKA Your Favorite Avenger]
French
In a 2021 promo for the “Loki” series, Hiddleston answers some questions about himself for the Marvel France YouTube channel. He talks about his favorite French words, places, foods, and films. It’s amazing how comfortable Hiddleston is speaking an entirely different language. However, he’s also humble enough to know his limits. During Hiddleston’s past French interview, he’s not afraid to ask for help when he doesn’t know a word. And he switches back to English when he needs to. Seeing Hiddleston go for French without being afraid to ask for assistance is a great example for language learners everywhere.
#4: Charming a South Korean Interviewer
Korean
While Hiddleston was in Seoul, South Korea, he managed to charm the heck out of his interviewer Tiffany. We assume local viewers didn’t mind either. After greeting Tiffany in Korean, the two chatted about the performer’s work in various locations around the city. As they watch the sun set over Seoul, he asks her for the Korean translation of beautiful. It was an incredibly smooth and charming moment. Not content to just win Tiffany’s heart, at the end of the interview, Tom turns to the audience and, with a little help, says, “I love you. Thank you.” And you know what? We believe him.
#3: A Norse God Who Knows Greek Mythology
Ancient Greek
As an undergraduate at the University of Cambridge, Hiddleston majored in Classics. The subject incorporates the study of Ancient Greek and Latin literature and language. Since Hiddleton excelled in his work and earned first-class honors, it’s no surprise that he can read Ancient Greek with ease. In an interview with the Greek network Mega TV, the host invites him to read a selection from the ancient Greek play “Electra.” Hiddelston doesn’t hesitate. He’s able to recite from the over 2,000-year-old text no problem. Hiddleston’s love for the classics and the Greek language shone in this interview and more.
#2: Juggling in Berlin
German
We knew Hiddleston was multi-talented. But watching him juggle, drink beer and speaking a foreign language in a moving car was especially impressive. During an interview for “taff” magazine’s “Stars in Cars,” Hiddleston and the host drive around in a Peugeot 106. At one point, the performer is caught off guard when he discovers juggling balls in the car. He decides to use the opportunity to pick up some new words at the same time. Hiddleston even casually throws out some conversational German out of nowhere. Honestly, it’s impressive that his language skills aren’t even the main attraction of this fun interview.
#1: “¡Despierta América!” (1997-)
Spanish
It seems like Hiddleston never passes up a chance to show off his comfort with the Spanish language. During an interview to promote “The Avengers” for Miami-based morning show “¡Despierta América!”, he explains that he studied Spanish in school. Hiddleston also admits that he can understand much more than he can say. And once again, he doesn’t hesitate to ask for words he doesn’t know and uses English when he has to. That last fact may be the most endearing part of the entire interview. While Hiddleston definitely knows he has above average language skills, he’s never ashamed to ask about what he doesn’t know.
