“The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past” (1991)

Even in the franchise’s early years, the “Zelda” games have provided players with lengthy, yet wonderful adventures. The series has been the center of many speedruns, like Xelna and his world-record run of “A Link to the Past”. Clocking in at one hour, thirty-nine minutes and nineteen seconds, Xelna cuts any corners possible; boomeranging keys, damage-boosting, cheesing boss fights, he pulls out all the stops. Its pretty cool seeing all the techniques being used, and we can only imagine the hours of planning and number of attempts that might have gone into earning him the world record.

“Super Mario 64” (1996)
“Super Mario 64” may not be the toughest game in the world, but when you’re aiming for a one-hundred percent completion, the task can be grueling, especially when you run into the more annoying challenges. Surprisingly enough, Allan “cheese05” Alvarez pulled off a full 120-Star run in just one hour thirty-nine minutes and twenty-eight seconds. What’s even more impressive is that he completed this run just a day after another player beat his previous time. The guy really knows how to utilize Mario’s moveset…and numerous glitch exploits possible.

“Diablo” (1996)

If you were to look up the world records in “Diablo”, you’ll find that each record is separated into the classes you can play as, with a fair few of them attempting to be the world record holder of the Sorceror class. Well, with a character that deals massive damage and can obliterate enemies with area of effect attacks, why would you go with the others? Our “Diablo” champion, funkmastermp, has proven to be the fastest sorcerer of all, finishing at twelve minutes and fifty-five seconds. But, man, its hard keeping up with his cursor movement when observing his strategy.

“The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” (1998)

There are many impressive speedruns for “Ocarina of Time”, but Torje’s is truly outstanding. The first couple of minutes make you wonder what he’s trying to pull off, but a few exploits later and he’s right at the end of the game fighting Ganon. With a record time of seventeen minutes and nine seconds, the run is over before you have time to comprehend how it all happened. It might be quite a long time before someone finds a better, faster way of beating Ocarina of Time, but at least they won’t have to worry about that damn Water Temple…

“Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos” (1990)

Tecmo’s legendary side-scrolling platformer is infamous for its challenging gameplay. If you speedrun or play this game professionally, you have our respect forever. As for the player known as “jimmypoopins”, well, we have one question for you, how the hell did you manage to beat “Ninja Gaiden II” in ten minutes and seven seconds?? As he runs and blazes through the levels, you’ll notice strategies involving damage boosting and selective power-ups. We’d love to replicate this, but something tells us this is best left to Jimmy.

“Kingdom Hearts II” (2005)

“Kingdom Hearts II” is certainly not a short game. A 100% completion run can take you over forty hours, maybe longer! However, a regular run might take you at least thirty hours. So, what if we told you someone beat it in a fraction of that time? Ninten866 tops the world record speedrun not once, but three times over, reigning supreme over the Beginner mode (at three hours and fifty-seven minutes), Standard mode (at four hours and thirty-eight minutes), and Proud mode (at five hours four minutes). Thank goodness he only went for an Any Percent run; a completion run would drive us insane!

“F-Zero GX” (2003)

Even on the easiest difficulty, the “F-Zero” games can be challenging, requiring players to look alive while looking ahead. With its intense speed and aggressive AI, we can only imagine how much of a nightmare this sci-fi racer must be on harder difficulties. CGN, or “CrazyGameNerd”, did not shy away from taking on “F-Zero GX” on the “Very Hard” difficulty, tasting sweet victory when he set the world record for completing the game at twenty-one minutes and forty seconds. Just watching how he cuts corners and races around the track with little to no error is astounding. We really recommend a watch.

“Contra III: The Alien Wars” (1992)

Not happy with just holding the speedrun record for co-op on Contra 3, these guys decided to take it to a whole new level. The “Contra” series is notorious for being damn near impossible to beat and Mister K and Hurblat decided to go even further beyond by sharing just one controller between them, beating the game at thirty-two minutes and thirty-nine seconds. Misker K may be joking about them having a “psychic connection” but after watching this, it has to be true right?

“Portal 2” (2011)

When you a game with a friend, you typically take turns to conquer a difficult game or you play co-op. Azorae, however, can take on a co-op game all by himself and finish in record time. Using a keybind for quick toggle between Peabody and Atlas, Azorae completed the entire campaign in forty-four minutes and forty-one seconds. A few months later, he beat his own time at forty-two minutes and twenty-eight seconds, a whole two minutes less. Amidst the clacking on his keyboard, its boggling to see him quickly switch between the two characters and quickly solving puzzles that would take us hours to figure out.

“Punch-Out!!” (1987)

Look, “Punch-Out” is a difficult game on its own. Hell, most of us still can’t figure out how to beat Mike Tyson. Pro-gamer “Sinister1” knows the feeling, but his remarkable feat lies in how far he can get playing the game while blindfolded. Seriously, man! That takes some serious memorization and reaction skills! Throughout the approximate 35-minute run, Sinister gets a few close calls, yet blasts through the game like its nothing. He may have lost to Mike Tyson, but he’s won our mad respect and admiration. We’re longing for the day he returns and conquers the whole game.
