Top 10 Video Games Where the Main Character is Having the Worst Time
We do not envy these guys. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we are counting down our picks for the top ten video games where the main character is having the worst time.
For this list, we’ll be looking at the games that put their protagonists through hell. As such, be on the lookout for mature content ahead, as well as a few grizzly spoilers down the line.
“Far Cry 3" (2012)
With its lush scenery you would have thought that Rook Island would make for
the perfect vacation spot. At least that’s what Jason Brody thought, until he ran into the psychotic and ever so quotable Vaas. Not only are his loved ones either imprisoned or killed off, but he’s roped into a war filled with gunshots, crazy drug trips, and the fight with the occasional shark. If that wasn’t bad enough, should he decide to abandon ties to the outside world and join forces with the beautiful Citra, Jason ends up slitting his girlfriend’s throat. No biggie though, in exchange Citra rocks his world…only to stab him through the heart mid-coitus. Some vacation.
"Alan Wake" (2010)
A romantic getaway into the mysterious town of Bright Falls sounds like just the thing to rekindle the creative spark in a writer. Unfortunately for Alan Wake, the dream soon becomes a nightmare when he finds that his wife has disappeared. The whole town is convinced he’s guilty of the deed, and he’s being hunted by the forces of darkness. As he tries to locate his wife, Alan also finds himself haunted by the events of a story he doesn’t remember writing. Now that’s one hell of a writer’s block.
"The Walking Dead" (2012)
Nothing beats a zombie apocalypse, though in this instance the only thing worse than the dead are the living. As an escaped convict, Lee finds himself as the unexpected guardian of a young girl called Clementine while the world crumbles around them. Aside from the ocean of walking corpses, Lee has to deal with bloody confrontations with other survivors, a family of cannibals,
as well as a sinister stranger who’s after Clementine. To go through so much only to succumb to a Walker bite, many of us still aren’t over it.
"Dead Space" (2008)
Go aboard the Ishimura, they said. It will be a great opportunity, they said. Well as engineer Isaac Clarke soon finds out, this is one gig he’s going to regret taking. As the ship becomes overrun with fearsome creatures known as Necromorphs, Isaac has to singlehandedly cut down wave after wave of increasingly monstrous foes. Throw in a crazed cult, a severe lack of assistance from the rest of the crew, as well as hallucinations involving his deceased girlfriend, and by the end of it we’re guessing Isaac wished he had chosen a different career.
“Amnesia: The Dark Descent” (2010)
We’ve all had those times where we wake up and the previous night’s events
are a little blurry. For Daniel, this is taken to new extremes when he finds
himself trapped in Brennenburg Castle with no memory of how he arrived. As
he delves deeper, he finds himself encountering all kinds of malevolent
creatures. These include Gatherers, the Shadow, and of course everyone’s
favourite; the water monster. You’d think overcoming all of these horrors would be
enough, but as Daniel soon finds out, the scariest thing in Brennenberg might
just be his own sanity. Or lack thereof.
“The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth” (2014)
Inspired by the ever so pleasant biblical tale of Isaac, our poor
protagonist might just go on record as one of the most unlikely child
characters ever conceived for a video game. In order to escape his crazed
religious mother, who seems pretty determined to kill him in the name of
God, Isaac must venture through a series of basements. All of which are
packed to the brim with disgusting, unnerving monsters. Armed with only his
own tears, Isaac must cry his way through to safety. Too bad there’s an army
of boss battles in the way, some of which are bound to cost you a good night’s sleep.
"Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" (2017)
Give Ethan the husband of the year award, because not many would be willing
to go through the crap he did. When he finds out that his beloved Mia may be
alive, he journeys down to Louisiana to bring her home. There’s just one
little issue; she’s been infected by a bio-weapon and turned into a
homicidal lunatic, to the point where she chops off Ethan’s hand with a
chainsaw. Things only spiral down from there, as Ethan becomes the prisoner
of the Baker Family. With each member being more psychotic than the next, it makes
for some truly harrowing encounters.
"Alien Isolation" (2014)
Bad luck seems to run in the family. While seeking out the truth surrounding
her mother’s disappearance, Amanda Ripley finds herself marooned on a vast
space station. And wouldn’t you know it, said space station also happens to
have a rather unwanted guest in the form of a Xenomorph. Practically
unkillable, all Amanda can do is run for her life and pray that the Alien
doesn’t find her. Throw in some rather murderous androids and trigger-happy
survivors, and space has never been more terrifying. Like mother, like
daughter.
"Outlast 2" (2017)
How much horror can one guy go through? Well if you’re Blake, apparently a
lot. After his wife is captured, Blake proceeds to go through the following:
being hunted down by radical Christians, being hunted down by radical
Satanists, nearly sliced apart by a pickaxe wielding psycho, nailed to a
cross, raped by an antichrist worshiper and forced to watch as his wife dies
in childbirth. All of this is interspersed with flashbacks from his
childhood where he relives the murder of his friend at the hands of a
perverse priest. Yeah…sucks to be Blake.
"Tomb Raider" (2013)
The retelling of Lara Croft’s origin allowed us to witness the birth of a
true survivor, not to mention one of gaming’s most badass female characters.
Of course, the path to become said badass wasn’t an easy one, in fact it was
filled with more than its fair share of horrific scenarios. We are of course
talking about her infamous death scenes, which manage to put many a player
on edge just from the realistic approach alone. Attacked by wolves, forced to
cauterize her own wounds, getting impaled through the throat, Lara does not
have it easy in this reboot!
