Top 10 Weirdest Deepfake Videos Ever
#10: Baby Elon Musk Montage
Posted in 2013, Andy Schrock’s YouTube video “Cutest Baby Montage Ever” went viral, accumulating over five million views. However, what started out as cuteness overload soon became incredibly creepy. In May 2019, TheFakening uploaded a new version of the video that added in Elon Musk’s face! The Tesla founder is seen enjoying a box race car, swinging on a swing, and even dressing up like Yoda. The video does capture Musk’s childlike wonder when he talks about space and the future. But seeing a grown man’s face on a child’s body just weirds us out.
#9: Dr Phil But Everyone Is Dr Phil
Danielle Bregoli’s infamous appearance on Dr. Phil in September 2016 launched her to instant online stardom, and it all began with one phrase … [“Catch me outside, how about that?”] As Bhad Bhabie, she’s since released numerous singles. Now, imagine this already off-the-rails interview, but everyone is Dr. Phil. Burrito Glasses brought this idea to life, using deepfake technology to replace not only the faces of Dr. Phil’s guests, but also those of the audience members. It’s like that scene in “Being John Malkovich” where Malkovich crawls through the portal into his own mind, and everyone is himself. Maybe somewhere, in a parallel world, everyone is Dr. Phil.
#8: Bernie Sanders Dancing
In 2021, the Bernie Sanders mittens meme went viral. But it isn’t the first time an image of the U.S. senator has been repurposed to hilarious effect. Back in February 2020 - which feels about a decade ago now - TheFakening brought us “Bernie Sanders Dancing”. The deepfake superimposed Bernie’s face on top of Steven Hall from “Britain’s Got Talent”. The combined audio of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” and Bernie’s fiery speech definitely makes you do a double take. Although the original performer does have a striking resemblance to the Senator, it’s still pretty strange to see Bernie bust a move.
#7: Home Stallone
Even after all of this time, Kevin McCallister is still finding new ways to entertain us. The original “Home Alone” sees Macaulay Culkin’s character fending off opportunistic thieves after his family leaves on vacation without him. However, thanks to Ctrl Shift Face, we have a seven minute version of the movie featuring Sylvester Stallone as the star instead. The overdub adds to the realism. This is one deepfake that definitely elicits a lot of chuckles. But it’s also very surreal … and slightly haunting.
#6: Ron Swanson as Wednesday Addams
When you think of Wednesday Addams, you probably don’t also think of Nick Offerman’s character Ron Swanson from “Parks and Rec”. But the two do have a certain deadpan expression in common. Still, it’s incredibly bizarre to see Ron Swanson’s face on Christina Ricci’s body. There’s just something about seeing an adult head on a child that freaks us out! The facial hair obviously makes this even worse. We have warm memories of 1993’s “Addams Family Values”, but DrFakenstein’s deepfake version is seriously messing with them.
#5: Donald Trump in Toddlers and Tiaras
Somehow, this deepfake is both fitting and disturbing at the same time. Former president Donald Trump’s penchant for self-aggrandizement was “huuuge”, as extraordinary as his “stable genius”. So seeing him as a contestant in a child beauty pageant feels somehow right … and wrong? This deepfake from TheFakening replaces the face of child pageant queen Brenna Gaskin in “Toddlers and Tiaras” with Trump’s. The result is everything you expect and more. It’s just weird enough to creep you out and make you laugh as well.
#4: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Dora the Explorer
Kids have been exploring the jungle with a young girl named Dora for a long time. And with two “Jumanji'' movies under his belt, it’s clear Dwayne Johnson is not afraid to head into the jungle himself. So perhaps we should have expected this one? In 2019, Dora jumped from the animated screen into the real world with a live action movie. This deepfake takes the trailer and keeps everything the same … except that Dora is now The Rock. We’re used to seeing Johnson’s hulking real life stature, so seeing his head on a little girl is definitely strange! Still, this version of the movie looks kind of awesome.
#3: Jennifer Lawrence-Buscemi on Her Favorite Housewives
After nabbing a Golden Globe for best actress in the 2016 biographical comedy-drama “Joy”, Jennifer Lawrence took questions from the press. Her answers were pretty straightforward, but just try to pay attention to the substance of what she’s saying when her face has been replaced with Steve Buscemi’s. Thanks to birbfakes, we now know what Buscemi would look like with Lawrence’s body, mannerisms, and voice. The effect is incredibly uncanny. Buscemi was impressed too, although also somewhat baffled that someone had put in so much work into it.
#2: Mike Tyson and Snoop Dogg as Oprah and Gayle
Oprah’s close friend Gayle King has appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” numerous times. In a segment filmed in 1991, Oprah and Gayle read through a series of old high school love letters. It was already pretty entertaining, but DrFakenstein decided to make it even more so by placing Mike Tyson’s face on Oprah, and Snoop Dogg’s on Gayle. The real Snoop Dogg seems to have been amused, as he shared it on Instagram. Gayle also found it hilarious, but apparently Oprah was torn between seeing it as funny or scary. We can definitely understand why!
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
It Means Hope
Nicolas Cage as Lois Lane
Cage Will Survive
Cage Returns, This Time as Amy Adams
Queen Elizabeth as Herself
This Meta Deepfake Is Very Unsettling
#1: Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk in Star Trek
“Star Trek: The Original Series” (1966-69)
Late in 2018, “South Park” aired a two-part season finale about web giant Amazon. In it, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is depicted as a man with a giant brain who communicates telepathically. His look for the show was inspired by the “Star Trek” episode “The Menagerie”, which featured aliens known as Talosians. Just over a year later, in February 2020, TheFakening posted a clip from the “Star Trek” episode that had been updated to feature Bezos as a Talosian and Elon Musk as Captain Pike. The deepfake of Musk is pretty decent, but Bezos looks frighteningly real - and unnerving!
