Top 10 Worst Netflix Romance Movies

Top 10 Worst Netflix Romance Movies
VOICE OVER: Kirsten Ria Squibb WRITTEN BY: Sammie Purcell
These Netflix romance movies are just the worst. For this list, we'll be looking at the cringiest Netflix films that bring everything but the love. Our countdown includes "The Kissing Booth," "Silver Skates," "Ibiza," and more!

#10: “Squared Love” (2021)

Teachers and models! The two types of women, with absolutely no overlap at all. Or at least, that’s what “Squared Love” would have you think. This terrible Netflix romantic comedy is about a frumpy teacher named Monika who leads a double life as a super glamorous model named Klaudia. Enter Enzo – the love interest – who falls for both Monika AND Klaudia, without realizing that they’re one in the same. Oh, and Enzo is also not who he says he is. The film’s premise is riddled with clichés and is pretty unconvincing altogether, hinging on an unbelievable idea. It’s got some pretty old-fashioned and sexist ideas about women as well, making this one a skip for us.

#9: “Ibiza” (2018)

A romantic comedy starring Robb Stark as a hot DJ set in Ibiza? That should have been an automatic hit, as far as we’re concerned. But this 2018 Netflix movie was anything but. “Ibiza” stars Gillian Jacobs as Harper, a bored, disgruntled New Yorker who has to fly to Spain for work. While in Spain, she meets Leo – the aforementioned Robb Stark, or Richard Madden. Harper follows Leo to Ibiza, and something barely passing for romance ensues. While that may sound like a promising premise, any humor in this film falls flat and there’s barely any chemistry between its two leads. “Ibiza” should have given us sexy, fun, and playful but, ultimately, it gave us nothing.

#8: “Sierra Burgess is a Loser” (2018)

Following her role as Barb in the first season of “Stranger Things,” fans were hoping for big things from actress Shannon Purser. When it was announced that she would be starring alongside Noah Centineo in a modern adaptation of “Cyrano de Bergerac,” there was a lot of goodwill for the production. Unfortunately, “Sierra Burgess is a Loser” completely fell short of our expectations. Purser does her best with the character and narrative, but what she’s given to work with just isn’t that great. Catfishing is sort of essential to the plot of “Cyrano,” but Sierra kisses someone without their consent and even pretends to be deaf. It’s not what we like to see.

#7: “Silver Skates” (2020)

Listen, if we wanted to watch “Titanic” or “Anastasia,” we would probably just do that – no need for the weird, boring knock-off. “Silver Skates” has a lot of the same themes and plot points as those two films. It takes place in Russia and centers on the romance between an aristocratic girl and a boy from a lower class. Not only is it an overdone premise, but the film just never reaches the heights of those other movies. The connection between Matvey and Alisa (or Alice) is a pale imitation of the likes of Jack and Rose, and the script itself is definitely on the dull side. It does take place during Christmas, and Russia at Christmastime IS very pretty – so that’s a plus, we guess?

#6: “Holiday in the Wild” (2019)

You would think with charismatic stars like Kristin Davis and Rob Lowe as leads, you’d be able to make a pretty good holiday movie. And, yet, Netflix managed to mess it up. “Holiday in the Wild” follows Kate, recently separated, and Derek. They’re two polar opposites who end up falling in love in… the wild–or in Zambia, to be precise. While that might seem like a pretty hard premise to fumble, the movie is way too cheesy – even by Netflix Christmas movie standards. Davis and Lowe are forced to muddle through really bad dialogue that keeps them from having any shred of chemistry. It’s a pretty ‘wild’ miss… badum-tss!

#5: “Tall Girl” (2019)

We have it on pretty good authority that “Tall Girl” does not speak for all tall girls. One of Netflix’s later attempts at the teen comedy genre, “Tall Girl” really fumbles the bag. The story follows Jodi Kreyman, the titular “Tall Girl,” as she navigates high school and the struggles of … being tall. Everyone has different insecurities, and we’re glad that Netflix wants to try and pay homage to all of those. But the way “Tall Girl” frames the struggles that come with being tall don’t feel very lived in or fleshed out. For being about a very specific experience, it’s one of the streaming service’s more bland and generalized offerings. It did make for some great memes, though.

#4: “To Each, Her Own” (2018)

This movie tries to do something interesting, but ultimately just doesn’t hit the mark. “To Each, Her Own” follows Simone, a lesbian who is afraid to come out to her ultra-conservative family. Enter Wali, a charming man who Simone ends up developing feelings for, throwing her into a whirlwind of confusion over her sexuality. While the movie tries to offer up an inquisitive and intricate take on a young woman figuring herself out, it ends up not really knowing what to do with itself. It’s not really funny, and doesn’t seem to really care about Simone’s sexual identity, using it as a simple plot point rather than an important part of her character.

#3: “Desperados” (2020)

2020’s “Desperados” sees the reunion of Nasim Pedrad and Lamorne Morris, who most notably played love interests on the beloved sitcom “New Girl.” Sounds like it should have been a big hit, right? Wrong! Instead of living up to the hype, the movie is – in a word – dumb. With nothing but gross-out humor and bad dialogue to offer, “Desperados” simply wastes the talents of its very capable actors. Nasim Pedrad in particular barely has anything of interest to do, and almost none of the so-called jokes in the film land. We hope to see better for Pedrad and Morris in the future – they deserve it.

#2: “The Kissing Booth” (2018)

Sometimes, even the most popular Netflix films are still the worst. And, even though they’re the worst, sometimes, they even spawn huge, successful franchises! So is the case with 2018’s “The Kissing Booth,” which explores an enemies-to-lovers narrative between high schoolers Elle and Noah. Look – we all love a good romantic comedy and we all love the enemies-to-lovers trope. When done well, there’s nothing wrong with getting a little cliché! The issue with “The Kissing Booth” is that it’s basically ALL clichés and has none of the heart or humor necessary to make them work. Not only that, but its sexism and generally unlikable characters don’t do it any favors.

#1: “The Wrong Missy” (2020)

Ah, another romantic comedy that makes fun of any woman who falls outside of the male ideal! You’d think, by now, we would have moved past that a little. But “The Wrong Missy” proves we haven’t – not by a long shot. Starring David Spade, the film follows a man named Tim who meets a beautiful woman named Melissa and asks her to go to Hawaii with him. However, after a case of mistaking phone numbers, he realizes he has invited a different Melissa, nicknamed Missy. Unlike the first Melissa, THIS Melissa is a little too much of an oddball for Tim to handle. The film is crass, sexist, and dumb, not offering much empathy to any of its characters – least of all Missy.
