#10: Jane Fonda
You’d think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who could put a positive spin on the coronavirus pandemic. But you’d be wrong. Aside from the misinformation shared through mass media and social media, there’ve been tons of people weighing in with their opinions on the subject. The latter includes actress and political activist Jane Fonda, who, while being interviewed by the Working Families Party on Zoom, called the health disaster [“God’s gift to the left.”] Her statement was meant to refer to how she thought the virus would show what then-President Donald Trump is really like. Though she added that it was [“a terrible thing to say,”] there are certainly many other ways she could have made her point, especially considering all the deaths and the global economic crisis that the pandemic has caused.
#9: Justin Bieber & Kendall Jenner
The COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 didn’t bring out the best in all celebrities. Case in point: Justin Bieber (alongside wife Hailey Baldwin) and Kendall Jenner, who were chatting via Instagram Live in early April. During their conversation, Justin brought up how thankful he was that he had such a nice mansion to shelter in place. Then the singer acknowledged all the people who couldn’t ride out the pandemic in luxury and wanted to show that his heart went out to them. All with which Kendall concurred. Bieber and Jenner faced criticism from people accusing them of being out of touch. It’s nice to count your blessings, but try not to do it in a way that makes you look like a tool.
#8: Hannah Brown
The former Miss USA contestant and reality star got into hot water for using the n-word on Instagram Live in May 2020. During a broadcast on Instagram Live, Brown was singing lyrics to “Rockstar” by Dababy, which included the racial slur. When people in the comments let her know what she did, she gave a half hearted apology. However, that was followed up by a denial where she joked that maybe it was her brother who used the word. Later, when it was clear that this lame attempt at damage control failed, she issued a more thoughtful apology condemning her behavior.
#7: Jesse Williams & the Bullitts
This video from August 2020 of a conversation between Jesse Williams and the Bullitts looked like something out of a found footage flick. Apparently, the Bullitts started the chat to apologize to Williams about a previous incident. Williams seemed to be okay with this, looking like he was willing to forgive. However, an unknown man enters The Bullitts home, and it’s revealed that he’s a mutual acquaintance that Jesse had sent over. Listeners were left wondering whether this was a joke or whether it was some kind of dramatic scene, as the conversation is hard to follow. Regardless, watching the video can raise your blood pressure.
#6: Michael Bublé
A troubling video came out in 2020 that showed Michael Buble poking his wife Luisana with his elbow during a livestream where they were reading aloud from a children’s book. Luisana immediately apologized, as if by reflex, and then Buble pulled her toward him like nothing happened. This sparked concerns among people who watched the video about possible abusive behavior from Buble. Then other videos of the couple came to people’s attention. In one video where Luisana arrived a couple of minutes late, Buble told her, SB “You’re so dead.” Luisana has gone on record denying that her husband is abusive toward her, but the videos still give a bad look to the singer.
#5: Cardi B
To many people who had watched this video from Cardi B’s Instagram Live account in December 2017, it looked like the rapper was getting it on with Offset, who was then her fiance. Offset was moving suggestively behind Cardi B, who was lying down and claiming to be tired. To set the record straight, Cardi B went on Twitter and insisted that nothing unseemly actually happened in the video. Both of them were only messing around and were fully clothed the whole time. Okay. That only leaves one question: why?
#4: Vanessa Hudgens
Yet another story about a celebrity getting into trouble during lockdown. In March 2020, the “High School Musical” star complained on Instagram to her followers about how unfair the lockdown was. Her reasoning was that we all gotta go sometime, so COVID’s no big deal. This sparked outrage among the people who thought that COVID was a big deal and that the illness justified lockdowns. Responding to the backlash, Hudgens filmed another video where she claimed her remarks were taken out of context. However, she later apologized on Twitter for her comments.
#3: Tekashi 6ix9ine vs. Trippie Redd
Despite having worked together in the past, these two rappers have been in a well-known feud. In 2017, Trippie Redd called out 6ix9ine for his inappropriate behavior with a minor, and 6ix9ine organized an attack on Trippie Redd. Their strained relationship resulted in this 2018 video where 6ix9ine tried to get a dialogue going on Instagram Live. The problem was, Trippie Redd wasn’t having it, so 6ix9ine couldn’t get a word in edgewise. The video is a nonstop shoutfest where two people are too busy talking over each other to have a constructive conversation.
#2: PewDiePie
2017 was a rough year for the YouTuber. First there was the Nazi controversy that led to Disney’s Maker Studios cutting ties with him. Then in September, PewDiePie -aka Felix Kjellberg - attracted more controversy while livestreaming the game “Playerunknown’s Battleground.” When competition got a little too heated, Felix let the n-word slip out after another player took what he considered to be a cheap shot. Obviously, there’s no excuse for saying that word, especially over something that happened in a video game. There was expected backlash from offended parties, including “Firewatch” creator Sean Vanaman, who issued DMCA takedowns on videos where PewDiePie played one of his games. The incident was another headache for PewDiePie.
#1: Lindsay Lohan
In this bizarre 2018 video, Lindsay Lohan decided to broadcast herself on Instagram Live harassing a family she claimed were refugees. Approaching the family, Lohan volunteered to take the children into a hotel room and show them movies as a gesture of goodwill. However, the mother declined this offer. When the family started walking away from her, she made the baseless accusation that they were “trafficking children.” Then things got more awkward when Lohan tried unsuccessfully to take one of the children with her. The episode was a worst case scenario for what happens when a celebrity tries to use their fame and influence to get involved in matters they have no business in.
