Top 10 Anime Characters With Insane Hidden Powers

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 20 Anime Characters With Insane Hidden Powers. For this list, we’re going to be looking at the characters who revealed themselves to have some epic ability unknown to either themselves or others at some point during their stories. Be on the lookout for major spoilers, and let us know your favorite whiplash of an anime power in the comments below.

#20: Michizo Tachihara

“Bungo Stray Dogs” (2016-) So, remember that punk kid from the Port Mafia? The one who made no impact at all and was generally regarded as generic henchman number two? Well, turns out he is a big deal after all. Revealed to be an undercover agent for the elite military unit known as the Hunting Dogs, Tachihara is a lot deadlier than anyone gave him credit for. His ability lets him manipulate metal to a crazy extent, which comes in handy when your job involves killing wanted criminals near and far.

#19: Zero Two

Also in:

Another Top 10 Insane Anime Characters

“Darling in the Franxx” (2018) Yes, we are absolutely talking about the time Zero Two randomly transformed into a spaceship. Yes, it’s still one of the stupidest things to happen in anime, but it totally counts as a hidden power so it gets a mention. After being imbued with the fullest extent of her darling’s love – Zero Two somehow merges with the giant Franxx to become a living mechanical vessel. With a human face. Oh sure, its firepower is monumental, but it still looks ridiculous!

#18: Jin Mori

Also in:

Top 10 Totally Insane Anime Characters

“The God of High School” (2020) In a world where every fighter has the ability to borrow the power of mythological figures and gods, it takes something a little bit special to make a character stand out. And that’s just what Mori does. Turns out that unlike his fellow cheryeok users, Mori is the reincarnation of an actual deity– the Monkey King Sun Wukong. As a result, he’s got a whole bag of tricks that few can hope to measure against. Que the lightning!

#17: Meliodas

“The Seven Deadly Sins” (2014-21) As the Dragon Sin of Wrath – Meliodas’ strength was never in question, neither was the Counter Magic he was able to unleash with his weapon. Him being the son of the demon lord and never able to truly die though? That was definitely a shock. Thanks to his heritage, Melodias is essentially immortal – though not in the traditional sense. Every time he kicks the bucket, he’s sent to purgatory, though in exchange for returning to the world of the living, he’s stripped of more of his humanity.

#16: Shirou Emiya

“Fate” series (2006-) Shirou is far from your average Master, given his penchant for excessively healing from any wound as well as having a crazy amount of mana. While the reveal of abilities such as Trace-On and Unlimited Blade Works were monumental, the one that really caught us off guard was that his bottomless magical energy and healing were caused by the fact he has Saber’s sheath stuffed inside him. That’s not a euphemism, he has Avalon, the scabbard of Excalibur, magically inserted into him by his father figure. How’s that for a conversation starter?

#15: Selim Bradley

“Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” (2009-10) Each member of the Homunculi have their own band of devilish tricks up their sleeve, though none caught fans off guard more than the reveal of Pride. Not only was the first and the strongest of all Homunculus hiding inside the body of a child, but the son of King Bradley at that. Don’t spend too long thinking about how messed up that family is though – Selim isn’t one to wait around before summoning his shadow self to devour everyone in sight!

#14: Dai

Also in:

Top 20 Mind Blowing Powers in Anime

“Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai” (2020-22) Don’t let his pint-size fool you – Dai is the strongest adventurer in the land – mainly due to him being the son of a dragon knight. While his sword and magic skills are top notch, it’s his Dragon Crest that truly pushes him to absurd heights. Appearing in moments of extreme exertion and conviction, the crest allows Dai to exude a draconic aura that nullifies damage while boosting his attack power to the extreme. And that’s before he moved it from his brow to his fist!

#13: Ryou

“Devilman Crybaby” (2018) Surprise, Satan! No, seriously. That’s Ryou’s whole deal. Despite being Akira’s oldest friend and helping to kickstart his crusade against demons, the truth remains that Ryou is the latest incarnation of the biblical figure, and he’s pretty dead set on continuing his war against God. Aside from his ingenuity when it comes to deception and manipulation, Ryou’s fallen angelic form is as powerful as you’d expect, to the extent can rip apart the world, and his bestie, with minimal effort!

#12: Izuku Midoriya

“My Hero Academia” (2016-) For the longest time, the power of Izuku’s One for All quirk solely lay in his extended strength and agility. That served him well for the most part, that is until he started to suddenly inherit all the individual Quirks from previous One for All users. From unleashing black whips made of energy, floating in mid-air, his own Spider-Sense – the powers just keep on coming. Izuku wanted to be the world’s greatest hero, and now he’s got an arsenal to back up that dream!

#11: Ichigo Kurosaki

Also in:

Every Bleach Ichigo Fight RANKED

“Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War” (2022) Honestly, is there anything this boy doesn’t have under his belt by this point? Along with his Shinigami, Hollow and Fullbringer abilities, Ichigo’s most recent conflict with the Strenritter revealed that – shock horror – he’s also half Quincy! Thanks to his mother’s Quincy heritage, Ichigo isn’t only able to use techniques such as Blut, but was eventually able to reforge his zanpakuto – now infused with every aspect of his being. It may sound excessive, but if you’re taking on someone like Yhwarch – it pays to have your fingers in so many strawberry pies!

#10: Kale

“Dragon Ball Super” (2015-18) Its always the quiet ones. While on first glance Kale looks to be a rather anxious girl who would rather cling to her mentor Caulifa instead of getting into fights, that all changed when her jealousy got the better of her. This was apparently enough to trigger her own transformation…into the Legendary Super Saiyan. We have no idea whether she’s Universe 6’s answer to Broly or she’s got infinite potential, but what we do know is that Cabba should think twice before asking Caulifa on a date anytime soon.

#9: Nice

Also in:

Top 10 Times Nice Guys SNAPPED in Anime (ft. Jonah Scott)

“Hamatora: The Animation” (2014) It’s fair to say that if you’re in an anime where everyone has unique abilities, and you’re so much of a swell guy you’re named Nice, then chances are you’re going to have some kind of god-mode. As a Minimum Holder, Nice normally relies on turning himself into sound waves as a means of getting an edge over a foe. However, he’s also got another ace in the hole, one that relies on both Skills heart and inspiring hope in others, which in turn restores their lost Minimums. This guy is the best kind of rechargeable battery.

#8: Jotaro Kujo

“JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders” (2014-15) Before you ask, no, we’re not talking about Stands here, because literally everyone and their great aunt has one by now. While Star Platinum is indeed impressive with its speed and ferocity, we’re actually pinpointing that one bonus ability that this Joestar descendant managed to pull out of the bag during his fight with Dio. The power to stop time itself. Originally thought to be a power only Dio could use, it’s possible that Jotaro is able to use this ability due to the family connection to Jonathan Joestar’s body.

#7: Yuichiro Hyakuya

“Seraph of the End” (2015) Life kind of sucks when you’ve been turned into walking bloodbanks in order to appease your new vampire overlords, something that Yuichiro takes great offense to. While his swordsmanship is capable of taking out most bloodsuckers he comes across, the combination of his childhood friend Mika being turned into a vampire, as well as his soldier buddies getting slaughtered, eventually the teen was pushed just a tad too far. While we were aware that Yuichiro had a little demon in him…we weren’t prepared for just how monstrous his incomplete Seraph form really was.

#6: Bell Cranel

“Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” (2015-) He wants to be the greatest adventurer, like no one ever was, though since he’s a rookie, Bell has a long way to go before he can start claiming those S-Class quests. Or does he? While his swordsmanship and talents with fireballs are pretty on point, he’s only managed to slay as many monsters and explore as many dungeons as he has due to a mysterious ability that causes his stats to rise like crazy. This skill has propelled him forward to the point that he can claim victory in battles with increasingly higher level monsters, meaning his potential growth is pretty staggering. Now if Hestia would just tell him about it.

#5: Yusuke Urameshi

Also in:

Anime Duel: Gon Freecss Vs Yusuke Urameshi

“Yu Yu Hakusho” (1992-94) He can beat the crap out of anyone with his bear fists or blast them back to the afterlife with a single burst of his Spirit Gun. Yep, this bad boy is a jack of all trades. That being said, given how we had gotten so used to him knocking down one demon after another, we weren’t exactly prepared for the reveal that Yusuke had a little devilry of his own coursing through his veins. As the climactic battle with Sensui comes to a close, the Spirit Detective makes a triumphant return…this time armed with a shit tone of demonic strength, and a hellish new hairdo. Guess he’s the best of all three worlds.

#4: Asta

“Black Clover” (2017-21) It wouldn’t be your typical shounen if the main character didn’t have a dark power lurking deep inside of him, and sure enough, Asta’s got quite the twisted tenant lurking in his soul. While we’ve seen hints of his demon entity pop on occasion during Asta’s most trying battles, it wasn’t until Ladros got all up in his business that Asta found himself coming face to face with his inner darkness. While it nearly swallowed him whole, the Black Bull’s resident non-magical loser managed to win the day by flying in like a bat out of hell. Well, to be more precise, like a Black Meteorite.

#3: Gon Freecss

Also in:

Top 20 Anime Powers That Can Beat ANYTHING

“Hunter x Hunter” (2011-14) While this kid has always been full of surprises, after the likes of Heavens Arena and Greed Island, we thought we had seen all Gon had to offer. After all, what else could top the world’s strongest game of rock paper scissors? Then his friend got killed by an evil pussycat, and that’s when the gloves came off. Distraught over losing Kite, Gon’s rage and overwhelming Nen transformed his body into the pinnacle of strength. Much like Pitou, all we could do was watch in disbelief as Gon effortlessly displayed power equal to that of the Chimera Ant Kind. This form is so boss that he can even used his severed arm as a weapon!

#2: Eren Yeager

Also in:

Anime Duel: Guts vs Eren Yeager

“Attack on Titan” (2013-) While we were taken aback when it was revealed this vengeful member of the Survey Corp could turn into a Titan, the real kicker came when Eren managed to twist the minds of the humanoid monsters with a single scream. With the mystery of the Titans continuing to deepen, the revelation about Eren’s purpose as the coordinate totally changed the power balance. Being able to throw down with the Attack Titan is one thing – but when you’ve got the species-altering entity that is the Founding Titan lurking inside you, you’re a whole different kind of beast.

#1: Monkey D. Luffy

“One Piece” (1999-) As if the future Pirate King wouldn’t be able to tap into something as crazy as Haki. While his mastery over the Gum Gum Fruit made Luffy a lethal threat against everything from rival pirates to marines to zombies, it was when he unknowingly unleashed the Conqueror’s Haki that really brought home the fact he was more than just a badass with a dream. From that point on, Luffy has only continued to astound us with just how far he has been able to delve into Haki’s multiple facets. As for you manga readers out there – don’t worry – we know what’s coming.
