VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu
These YouTube mysteries are as creepy as they come! For this list, we'll be looking at the most unsettling YouTube videos that raised, or continue to raise, a lot of questions. Our countdown includes Chip-Chan, The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet, Teleka Patrick, Catacombs Found Footage, Shima Luan, and more!

#20: Chip-Chan

This is the name given to an unknown Korean woman who spent all day live streaming in her apartment. She rarely left, slept up to 20 hours a day, and occasionally scribbled incoherent ramblings on a board. The woman also claims to have been implanted with a mind-controlling microchip and that she is being stalked by a corrupt cop she calls “P.” Today, Chip Chan runs a YouTube channel called ControlWeapon Mind, which is primarily used to broadcast her deteriorating skin condition. She also uploads videos with worrisome titles like “Korean police make cleaners harass me everywhere I go.” To this day, no one knows the true identity of Chip Chan, but many theorize that she suffers from an unidentified mental health disorder.

#19: Grave Robbing for Morons

On YouTube, there exists a VHS rip of a very old video dating back to the ‘80s or early ‘90s. It’s called “Grave Robbing for Morons,” and it sees a young man explaining to the camera how to properly rob graves. As if that wasn’t creepy enough, the man is also holding what could be a human skull throughout a good chunk of the video. And try as they might, internet sleuths haven’t cracked a single aspect of it. No one knows the identity of the man or whether or not he’s a legitimate grave robber. We don’t even know if that’s a real human skull or a convincing fake. Nothing about the video is definitive, and it has remained a tantalizing mystery for years.

#18: Spy Kitten TV

Top 10 Creepiest YouTube Mysteries Ever

Conspiracy theories breed conspiracy theories. Case in point: Spy Kitten TV. This was a young YouTuber who spoke about the Illuminati and various celebrities. Titles of her videos include “Jesuit Pope Francis is a Freemason” and “Something Strange Is Happening to Taylor Swift.” But following a 2018 video about Tekashi 6ix9ine, Spy Kitten TV suddenly stopped uploading. As of 2022, she has not released another video. Some speculated that she was silenced for “exposing” the truth and going public against the Illuminati. But in reality, the host of Spy Kitten TV simply moved to a new channel called “The Witching Hour.” However, even that is inactive as of 2019. So the mystery appears to continue…

#17: alantutorial

This might be what David Lynch would do if he was on YouTube. alantutorial was a very bizarre channel in which the reclusive host provided completely useless tutorials to his audience, all while exhibiting a desperate need to be liked. Alan’s mental state deteriorates throughout the series, and it’s clear that he is becoming increasingly unwell. At one point he’s even abducted and held prisoner in a filthy room, from which he later escapes. It’s a fascinating series of videos, and it’s sure to captivate those who are unaware of its origins. Alas, it’s all totally fake. This channel was a creative project conducted by visual artist Alan Resnick, who later found success collaborating with Adult Swim.

#16: The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet

While the music isn’t really creepy in and of itself, there’s something unsettling about this enigmatic tune whose origins are completely unknown. Found on YouTube - and various other sites - this is what is collectively known as “The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet.” A piece of new wave, the song was ripped from the German radio station Norddeutscher Rundfunk, likely in the early to mid ‘80s. The song became a viral phenomenon in 2019 and has remained so ever since. Entire web communities are dedicated to identifying the song, but as of 2022, none have been successful. Do you happen to recognize it? If so, you might have solved one of the internet’s most intriguing mysteries.

#15: humanbeing151

There are some deep recesses of YouTube, and that’s where user humanbeing151 resided. This particular video is just one of over a thousand videos that an old creator also known as Insomniac had uploaded. While that channel has since been deleted or removed, some of the videos have been re-uploaded by other users like the similarly named humanbeing15. Nearly ten minutes in length, this one depicts a camera operator showing off an enormous collection of notebooks. On a piece of paper on the wall the creepy message, “Mr Diddy all this hard work I have for you” can be read. Things go full “Shining” when the man opens various notebooks, revealing hundreds of repeated lines about P. Diddy. Internet sleuths have deduced that the man in the video is another user named An il and that the notebooks contain his songs. It’s possible that An il used Diddy to try to game the old YouTube system and amass the attention of the internet.

#14: 11B X 1371

Also in:

Top 10 Creepiest Mysteries of the Last Decade

Back in 2015, a creepy video cryptically titled “11B X 1371” made the rounds. It depicts a person in a black plague doctor outfit holding a blinking light and standing inside what looks like a ruined and abandoned building. Accompanying the video is a very unnerving bit of distorted audio. Even creepier are the hidden messages found within the video and sound spectrogram, which includes photos linked to famous homicides. The video generated a ton of interest, and online communities were devoted to cracking its codes and mysteries. After several months, a man named Parker Wright claimed responsibility for the video and said that it was an art project. Wright proved his involvement through various methods, including an interview with The Daily Dot, finally putting the mystery to rest.

#13: Hi Walter! I Got A New Gf Today!

This could be - or, at least was - one of the most perturbing videos found on YouTube. A man supposedly named Patrick tells his friend Walter all about his new “girlfriend.” He relates a typical shopping trip that he shared with her before proudly showing her off. Patrick opens a door, revealing a bound and kidnapped woman screaming for help. Some viewers believed that this was genuine and speculated that the woman was actually missing teenager Kayla Berg. The controversial video drew so much attention that it was eventually investigated by the police. However, they discovered that it was staged and that it did not have any connection to a real missing persons case.

#12: meatsleep

An infamous series, meatsleep is like that video from “The Ring” brought to horrible life. Nearly one hundred videos were uploaded since the 2014 debut of the channel known as meat, and they all contain cryptic and incredibly perplexing visuals. These visuals are clearly meant to confuse, scare, and make viewers feel generally dirty. Most of them are of a very dark nature, sharing recurring themes like warped audio, hidden messages, kidnapping, and even homicides. Naturally, as is often the case with videos like this, no one had any idea what they meant or what their connection to ‘sewnkin’ was. They were even submitted to the FBI, prompting the creators to stop the series, delete the videos and reveal that it was all staged as some type of creepy online experience in one final upload.

#11: Webdriver Torso

And here is what could very well be the biggest letdown in the history of YouTube mysteries. Beginning in September 2013, Webdriver Torso began posting unusual videos consisting of enigmatic coded titles, colorful moving blocks, and loud beeps. One video even showed an outline of Rick Astley, the popular singer behind the rick-rolling sensation “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Naturally, the internet got to work attempting to unlock the channel’s intention and the meaning behind its videos. Following a thorough investigation, Engadget reached out to YouTube and Google - which owns YouTube - humorously revealed that Webdriver Torso was simply a testing channel meant to study the site’s upload quality. Talk about a giant “whomp whomp.”

#10: Deeper

Also in:

Skin Deeper: Bath Bombs - Episode 3

Deeper is by far one of the creepiest channels found on YouTube. Most of the videos are titled with random letters and numbers, and run at just under one minute. The content varies, with some taking place in the woods, others in a suburb, and even in eerie abandoned locations. Many contain distorted audio (just to add to the creepiness) and some come equipped with codes to be deciphered. This is where things get even creepier. The ciphers contain the names of murder victims who disappeared around Colorado. Some think Deeper is just a troll or an experimental content creator, others believe that he is a genuine serial killer taking responsibility for the deaths.

#9: Teleka Patrick

The internet loves an unsolved mystery, and the death of Teleka Patrick was one of the most intriguing. Patrick disappeared in December 2013, and people quickly turned to videos that Patrick had uploaded to YouTube the month before her disappearance. The videos show Patrick speaking and singing to a potential love interest, despite her not being in a relationship at the time. However, the Kalamazoo Gazette later reported that the anonymous “love interest” was probably gospel singer Marvin Sapp, whom Patrick had reportedly been stalking. Sapp had gotten a restraining order against Patrick after turning in 400 pages of unanswered correspondence. Patrick’s body was later found in a lake, and two autopsies concluded that she had drowned.

#8: Kate Yup

Top 10 Iconic Mary-Kate & Ashley Fashion Moments

At first, Kate Yup was just another ASMR channel—one centered around eating enormous quantities of seafood. However, things quickly took a turn for the creepy. Kate began appearing with visible signs of bodily harm, including a bruise and a split lip. In one video, an off-screen voice can be heard yelling at Kate. Another particularly disturbing moment was when Kate capitalized specific letters in her on-screen descriptions, spelling out “SOS”. Kate can also be seen tapping on a bowl in Morse code, with the code spelling out “Please help me”. Other videos have also shown potential cries for help as well. When Kate responded to clear up misconceptions, the sentences were written in the third person, as if someone else was writing the comment. Kate’s channel stopped uploading in November of 2019; the mystery remains unsolved.

#7: Catacombs Found Footage

Found footage is a popular horror genre, but it’s even creepier when it happens in real life. On YouTube, this horrifying video titled “Paris Catacombs Lost Man Footage” has accumulated over 700,000 views. The camera was reportedly found in the Paris catacombs, and the footage shows a man exploring the catacombs and coming across various bones. The man later panics and begins running before dropping the camera and disappearing into the darkness. The individual has never been identified, and his fate remains unknown. Some think the footage is genuine, while others believe it’s a hoax. The footage has been circulating for years, and was even included in an early 2000s ABC Halloween special, but the mystery persists.

#6: Marina Joyce

This vlogger became the subject of various conspiracy theories when viewers alleged a strange change in behavior. They thought she looked scared in the video Date Outfit Ideas, and a theory quickly spread that Joyce was being held against her will and forced to make videos. Some people even called the police, who later reported that Joyce was safe. That seemed to be the end of it. However, Joyce later went missing in July of 2019. She re-appeared on August 10, and despite being found alive and well, and despite Joyce’s claims that she never went missing in the first place, the internet still suspected foul play. Questions remain unanswered as Joyce and her boyfriend have refused to divulge more information.

#5: Skinny Bob

Back in 2011, YouTuber ivan0135 uploaded four short videos. They show purported UFOs and aliens that were supposedly taken from classified government material and collected between 1942 and 1969. One video depicts a flying UFO, one a crashed UFO, and another a gravely injured or dead alien. But the most popular video is of an alien nicknamed Skinny Bob. He’s seen sitting in a chair, then standing as the camera pans up his body, showing his black outfit and elongated arms. Many people find this to be the most convincing alien video on the internet. If it’s fake, well you gotta praise the special effects. Provided, of course, that it is special effects …

#4: Shima Luan

This YouTuber and voice actress worked on the animated YouTube channel, Super Planet Dolan, until 2016. That year, The Danger Dolan channel revealed that Shima Luan had all-but disappeared. No one knew where Luan had gone or why she had cut contact with the YouTube channel. YouTuber ScareTheater later did a video on Luan, and a member of the Dolan crew named Hellbent responded in the comments. He insinuated that Luan was safe but didn’t provide specific personal details, citing Luan’s privacy. In December 2020, the profile picture of Luan’s personal YouTube account was changed to a black and white photo of fallen leaves. What it means remains uncertain - as does the reason for Luan’s disappearance in the first place.

#3: Kenny Veach

A proud hiking enthusiast from Nevada, Kenny Veach went by the YouTube name snakebitmgee. Veach was better known for his comments than his own videos, and in 2014 he left comments on an Area 51 video about a strange encounter in a cave near Nellis Air Force Base. Fellow commenters encouraged Veach to seek out the cave and document his journey for YouTube. Following an attempt in November 2014, he has not been seen, Rescue teams were sent in, but the only thing they recovered was Veach’s cell phone near a vertical mine shaft. A user named Sheryon Pilgrim left a comment on Veach’s most popular video, claiming to be his girlfriend. She stated that Veach had been battling depression and may have ended his own life.

#2: I Feel Fantastic

Top 10 Creepiest Mysteries You've Never Heard Of

In April 2009, the YouTube channel Creepyblog uploaded a video titled “I Feel Fantastic”. It depicts a horrifying android singing an original song to the camera. The android was reportedly built by a man named John Bergeron, and the video sees the android raising its hand, moving its head, and laying on the floor. All the while, creepy electronic music plays in the background. In one instance, the camera turns upside down before changing locales and zooming in on a nondescript wooded area. Some viewers thought that the android’s clothes belonged to deceased murder victims and that the wooded area revealed their burial spot. However, incredible creepiness aside, this really was just a singing android … a very creepy one.

#1: Unfavorable Semicircle

Back in March of 2015, a channel called Unfavorable Semicircle began posting a series of bizarre videos. The videos consisted of strange pixelated images, accompanied by either silence or creepy distorted noises. In some, a muffled male voice can be heard reciting numbers. The channel uploaded thousands of these videos. A Reddit community was set up to deduce the meaning behind the channel, with theories ranging from an alternate reality game to abstract art to some type of testing channel. Unfavorable Semicircle was taken down just a few hours after the BBC reported on it, and it has never been heard from since. So it’s quite possible that we’ll never know what the hell it was all about.
