Our countdown includes Ender Dragon “Minecraft” (2011), Archdemon “Dragon Age: Origins” (2009), Dinraal, Farosh, and Naydra “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” (2017), Ridley “Metroid” series (1986-), Spyro “Spyro the Dragon” series (1998-) and more!

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings: Everything You Should Know

While picking the wrong story branch presents you with a mysterious, ferocious dragon that’s awesome in her own right, take Iorveth’s path and you’ll be in the presence of the daughter of the golden dragon who not only lets you fly her through the air, but also saves your life, effortlessly slaying enemy soldiers in the process. Blending in as a revolutionary under the moniker of Saskia the Dragonslayer, this is one woman you definitely don’t want to scorn, as those extra sharp talons and fire breath will quickly put you in your place.

#19: Eizen

“Tales of Zestiria” (2015)

Taking a back seat from his glory days as a main character of the prequel, this former first-mate-of-a-pirate-group-turned-dragon is also known as the “Death God”, which is not a title that’s handed out easily. Previously saving the world by straight up snacking on the Lord of Calamity, this black, winged beast is at first invulnerable to all your attacks, but later becomes an optional yet formidable foe with plenty of HP and some devastating spells that will wreck your party, and your day. We wouldn’t expect any less from the Reaper.

#18: Rayquaza

“Pokémon” series (1996-)

Top 10 Video Game Series With No Bad Games

Serving as the master of the weather trio, there’s no shortage of moments that depict just how epic this legendary pokémon is. Not only does it prevent an apocalyptic battle by scolding Kyogre and Groudon like children, but in the 3DS remakes it can mega evolve, allowing it to fly through space and even through a frickin’ meteor. It’s almost unfair that this green serpent can unleash some devastating attacks with its impressive stats, but take into account how much of a pain it is to catch, and we feel like it balances out.

#17: Ender Dragon

“Minecraft” (2011)

Also in:

Top 20 Greatest Video Game Endings of All Time

One of the coolest aspects of Mojang’s sandbox, this blocky beast is an event to get to all on its own, requiring gamers to hunt down rare materials just to craft the portal to the dragon’s den. Compared to other dragons he might not look like much, but you better hope you’re a good shot, because this final boss is perfectly happy launching fireballs at your face while he glides overhead, swooping down into arms reach only when it’s convenient to him. Throw in some regenerative abilities, and you’ve got a villain who’s much more than meets the eye.

#16: Gore Magala

“Monster Hunter” series (2004-)

Also in:

Top 10 HARDEST Video Game Series of All Time

As a beast in a series of games that is literally characterized by slaying ferocious monsters, you’d expect a dragon of this pedigree to be pretty impressive, and it doesn’t disappoint. Its body has six razor sharp, clawed limbs, scales that allow it to track prey by heat, and it has a tendency of entering into a frenzied state of aggression. Gore Magala is one dragon that you only want to hunt when you’re armed to the teeth and absolutely mean business.

#15: Paarthurnax

“The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” (2011)

Also in:

Top 10 Elder Scrolls Games

The continent is full of dragons that make up the focus of the game, but this elder dragon and grandmaster of the Greybeards stands out from the rest. His body bears the scars he’s earned during the Dragon War, but it’s his wisdom which helps you achieve mastery over your shouts throughout the game. We quickly learn that he’s done some pretty despicable things, but whether you decide to kill him or not, you have to appreciate the moral ambiguity of his character that’s all too rare among the winged lizards.

#14: Archdemon

“Dragon Age: Origins” (2009)

Also in:

Top 10 Greatest Video Game Documentaries

Surprisingly smart and incredibly evil, these hive-minded darkspawn not only look awesome, but are presented as some serious killing machines by brutally taking out hordes of soldiers with their jagged jaws and powerful tails. Even if you try to keep your distance, these scaled monstrosities can summon tornados, exhale a devastating breath attack, and can even detonate their own darkspawn reinforcements to explode your allies all over the battlefield. Oh, and they’re immune to all weapon effects that deal bonus damage to dragons. Of course they are.

#13: Seath the Scaleless

“Dark Souls” (2011)

Also in:

Top 10 Greatest Video Game Worlds (REDUX)

Invulnerable in your first encounter with the large, albino lizard, this dragon, when not killing those that wander into his archives, enjoys experimenting on the undead in the hopes of achieving the immortality his brethren enjoy by virtue of their scales. While this makes him probably the smartest dragon around, it also means he was driven insane and isn’t likely to resolve your differences peacefully. A nice change of pace from the fire that most dragons love spitting, Seath prefers to use poisons and curses to do his dirty work, which only adds to his uniqueness.

#12: Grigori

“Dragon’s Dogma” (2012)

Also in:

The Greatest Video Game Weapon of All Time

Showing off all the sinister traits that make these beasts so captivating, this dangerous foe marks his entry into the game by murdering the man that summoned him, and proceeding to flaunt his power and taunt you. That’s one hell of an entrance. This massive boss not only has a lethal assortment of fiery attacks at his disposal, but also boasts massive HP, helping him to shrug off damage. Charismatic, tough, and cocky, this is one dragon that talks the talk and walks the walks.

#11: Dinraal, Farosh, and Naydra

“The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” (2017)

Also in:

The 10 BEST Zelda Breath of the Wild Side Quests

Named after the goddesses of Hyrule, these enigmatic, elusive beasts are one of the coolest parts of Nintendo’s newest open-world Zelda game. The focus of Zelda titles is always on Link, but in a nice change of pace, these dragons could not care any less about the legendary hero as they soar overhead. (Aside from that one quest where you free the corrupted Naydra). While all three provide a variety of rare materials, they’re tough to track down and dangerous to approach, as one fireball or spark of lightning can easily knock you back down to earth.

#10: Singe

“Dragon’s Lair” (1983)

Also in:

Top 10 Hilarious Video Game Deaths

This enormous green foe was the first detailed dragon to hit the arcades back in the day, though he's probably not the brightest dragon of all time, considering he keeps the one weapon that can slay him within his very own lair. He was one of the first major antagonists in video games, kidnapping Princess Daphne and sealing her inside a barrier. Oh and a Fun fact: Singe means monkey in French.

#9: Onaga

“Mortal Kombat: Deception” (2004)

Also in:

Top 20 Greatest Video Game Villains Of All Time

You might think Liu Kang’s very own Dragon is pretty noteworthy, but his party trick is nothing compared to the power of the true emperor of Outworld. Onaga makes one hell of a first impression taking down the combined strength of two powerful sorcerers and a god without breaking a sweat. Complete with being one of the toughest Mortal Kombat bosses sets Onaga comfortably in the number nine slot.

#8: The Ur-Dragon

Also known as the undead dragon. This guy is absolutely terrifying and it's not just the fact that he breathes purple fire, as he has a ridiculous amount of health and as multiple hearts all over his body. Rounding it all out, he can petrify his enemies as well. He is definitely someone you do not want to go up against unprepared.

#7: Dragon God and the Elemental Dragons

What’s more terrifying than dealing with one dragon? Having him separated into six different dragons and having to take care of them one at a time, only to have them later merge into the even more powerful and colossal Dragon God. Oh and it’s also a cybernetic organism. If it wasn’t for this video helping you with a visual aid, that would sound like some sort of dragon-voltron-hybrid, but even that wouldn’t stand a chance against the Dragon God’s power.

#6: Ridley

“Metroid” series (1986-)

No list of video game dragons would be complete without one of the most iconic dragons of the 90’s. This cute little guy prefers to take out his burning rage on sheep, and has also been known to dabble in ice and electricity. Regardless, Spyro has remained one of the most lovable video game characters, even when we had to buy all of those toys… but at least he had a return to form with the remastered trilogy.

#4: Bahamut

“Final Fantasy” franchise (1987-)

Also in:

Top 10 Best Crossover Video Games

A main staple to the franchise, this recurring dragon is surprisingly named after the mythological Arabian fish. Whether it’s as a summon or as a boss battle, Bahamut has appeared in various forms over multiple Final Fantasy games but two things have always stayed the same: One: he’s a dragon and Two: He has one of the most powerful moves in the series in the form of his destructive Mega Flare.

#3: Charizard

“Pokémon” series (1996-)

Also in:

Top 10 Amazing Shows Based on Video Games

Out of all the Pokemon worthy of making this list, none are more memorable or iconic as Charizard. Starting off as one of the beginner Pokemon Charmander, he’ll eventually evolve into the bad ass burning lizard. Charizard remains to this day as one of the Pokemon many fire trainers bond with the most. Oh and if you’re going to complain that he can’t make the list cause he’s technically not a Dragon Type Pokemon (MegaCharizard X Evolution shown) Now he is.

#2: Alduin

“The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” (2011)

Also in:

Top 10 Anticipated Video Games of the Next Decade

Naturally a game well known for powerful dragons is bound to be featured more than once on this list. And you can’t bring up Skyrim without mentioning the almighty Alduin, also known as The World Eater and The First Dragon. Being the primary antagonist, Alduin is capable of reviving a race of dragons from extinction in order to wipe out humanity. He’s so powerful that you’ve gotta travel all the way to the Hall of Valor and team up with legendary heroes in order to defeat him.

#1: Deathwing

“World of Warcraft: Cataclysm” (2010)

Also in:

Top 10 Greatest Video Game Endings

Taking the top spot is the dragon that not only talks tough, but also powerful enough to single handedly devastate the largest MMO world in all of Video Games. With his wings engulfed in flames, he produces enough downward force to shatter infrastructure with a simple flyby. The only way you could make him more badass is if you gave him Adamantium armor … Oh wait he actually does have that. Don’t try to pull a Dovahkiin here: if you face him alone, you’re absolutely done for.
