Top 20 Sitcom Moments That Made Us Happy Cry

Top 20 Sitcom Moments That Made Us Happy Cry
VOICE OVER: Saraah Hicks WRITTEN BY: Kim Mabee
These sitcom moments never fail to make us happy-cry. For this list, we'll be looking at the scenes from our favorite situational comedies that made us so overcome with joy that we couldn't help but tear up. Our countdown includes “Boy Meets World,” “New Girl,” “Schitt's Creek," and more!

#20: Cory & Topanga Get Married
“Boy Meets World” (1993-2000)

This couple had plenty of sweet moments throughout their years together, as we saw them grow from childhood crushes, to high school sweethearts, and finally to husband and wife. Even through their ups and downs, their wedding vows assured us that these two would be together forever. Despite the fact that Cory and his best friend, Shawn, got into it before and during the wedding, Topanga and Cory managed to pull it together for a magical ceremony. During their vows, Topanga talked about how sure she is that he’s the one, as he’s the one who’s been sure about her all these years, and we couldn’t have been happier for them.

#19: Mandy & Georgie Have a Baby
“Young Sheldon” (2017-)

Georgie and Mandy’s unexpected relationship has turned out to be one of the most adorable and memorable ones on the show thus far. Their age gap and unexpected pregnancy led to some turbulence, but it’s super endearing watching them navigate their anxiety over becoming new parents, and seeing them figure it out together while supporting one another. The biggest tearjerker so far came when Mandy gave birth to their daughter, who Georgie adorably called tiny and perfect, and he revealed they named the baby after his meemaw. Connie immediately teared up along with the rest of us, and we can’t wait to see more sweet moments between this little family as they continue to grow together.

#18: Nick & Jess Get Back Together
“New Girl” (2011-18)

It’s hard to think of a couple with more on-screen chemistry, and we were cheering from our living room couches when they kissed for the first time in season 2. It took some time for both of them to confess their feelings and get together for real, and we were fairly confident that when they broke up it wasn’t truly the end for them. With some encouragement from their friends, and a certain iconic tune from “Dirty Dancing,” Nick and Jess muster up the courage to tell each other how they feel. We were elated when they reunited in the elevator, and when we saw those doors open, we could barely keep it together.

#17: Shawn Officially Becomes Maya’s Dad
“Girl Meets World” (2014-17)

This “Boy Meets World” spinoff reintroduced us to the characters we knew and loved. While we adored seeing Topanga and Cory’s family, we also couldn’t wait to see what Shawn had been up to. Throughout this new series, we saw him fall in love with a woman named Katy, who had a daughter named Maya. Another familiar face in this show was Mr. Turner, who talks about how he regretted never officially adopting Shawn after he had taken him in as a teenager. Also in the finale, after Shawn and Katy are married, Shawn officially adopts his step-daughter, and we couldn’t help but grab the tissues when Maya referred to herself as Maya Hunter.

#16: Jesse & Becky’s Wedding
“Full House” (1987-95)

Jesse Katsopolis was a bachelor through and through when he moved in with the Tanners, and it seemed he had no intention of changing his ways until he met Danny’s co-host, Rebecca Donaldson. He fell for her instantly, even though it took her a while to reciprocate those feelings, but when she did, we had no doubt that they’d be together forever. The day of their wedding was tumultuous as Jesse went skydiving, got stuck in a tree, went to jail, and nearly missed the ceremony. Jesse and Becky’s exchange of vows is beautiful and tear jerking, but nothing beats him singing the song, “Forever.”

#15: Ted Finally Meets the Mother
“How I Met Your Mother” (2005-14)

This was a moment nine seasons in the making. After watching Ted date dozens of women, and teasing us about his future wife’s identity, we couldn’t wait to see them finally get together. The mother, aka Tracy, met every member of the gang before she met Ted, and we got to see several of their milestones as a couple before we actually saw them meet for the first time. During their first interaction, they realize that fate might have brought them together, and they fell for each other before our eyes. Considering the mother’s fate being revealed in the episode, it was nice to have a happy cry before the inevitable sad tears started flowing.

#14: Will & Grace Reunite
“Will & Grace” (1998-2006; 2017-20)

These two best friends had their fair share of chaos throughout the series’ run, but their biggest blow-up came at the end of its original run in 2006. When Grace is abruptly reunited with her ex who also recently impregnated her, she decided to move out, which left Will deeply hurt. While they briefly reunited a few years later, it was clear that things were strained between them. That is, until they moved their respective kids into their college dorms several years later, when they reconciled for good. After wasting too many years apart, we were moved to tears to see them sitting together, watching TV just like they used to.

#13: Danielle Jo Tanner
“Fuller House” (2016-20)

Throughout the “Full House” spinoff, Donna Jo Fuller navigated her seemingly perfect life in contrast to her little sister, Stephanie, who couldn’t seem to get it together. Towards the later seasons, she settled down and found herself, which led to her decision to have a baby. With Kimmy as her surrogate and DJ as her fiercest supporter, baby girl Tanner-Gibbler was born during another emotional moment on the show. But, the most heartfelt scene came when Stephanie revealed that her daughter's name is Danielle Jo, or Danni, or maybe even DJ. Watching this moment now makes us cry twice as much since the passing of Bob Saget, and we’re so happy we got to see this special moment between them.

#12: Chidi Reads His Note
“The Good Place” (2016-20)

This series took us on an emotional rollercoaster as those in the good place figured out their place, fell in love, and pondered the meaning of it all. Chidi was a philosophical genius who was able to help explain complex ideas in beautifully simple ways, and it turns out even he could benefit from his own words of wisdom. He grew up determined to find answers in the world, but he was able to remind himself that Eleanor is the answer. This moment reminded himself, and the viewers, that the meaning of our lives revolves around the ones we love, and that was more than enough to make us cry.

#11: Chandler & Monica Get Engaged
“Friends” (1994-2004)

Chandler and Monica’s relationship was unexpected to say the least, even to them, and it had its fair share of ups and downs. Least of which was their engagement, with Chandler having to barter for the perfect ring, Richard interrupting the original proposal, and Monica being left to choose between them. All of these mishaps made the actual proposal even more surprising, magical, and emotional. After Chandler thinks that all hope is lost, he walks into the apartment to see it filled with candles and Monica on bended knee. They end up proposing to each other while they, along with us, could barely keep it together.

#10: Amy & Jonah Get Back Together
“Superstore” (2015-21)

We could hardly wait to see Amy and Jonah get together, as their chemistry was evident from the very beginning. We were thrilled when they finally kissed during the tornado and even happier when they gave it a go as a couple. But, when Amy got a job offer in California, we were left with mixed feelings. When they broke up, we didn't see Amy for a while, but luckily the finale wrapped everything up perfectly. With the store closing and their futures uncertain, they decided to get back together for good. If that didn’t already have us tearing up, full blown waterworks were in effect when we saw a flash forward of their happy lives together.

#9: Cam & Mitch Get Married
“Modern Family” (2009-20)

Nothing gets those happy tears flowing quite like a good wedding. Cam and Mitch’s big day was one big, chaotic family affair and we wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Between wildfires closing in on them and Sal going into labor, things were looking less than ideal. Luckily, Jay swooped in to save the day by having the wedding at his country club when no other venue could accommodate them. Even though it wasn’t the day they imagined, watching Jay and Gloria walk Mitch down the aisle, Phil marrying them at the end of it, and the two gentlemen finally saying I do, was absolutely superb.

#8: I Love You & I Like You
“Parks and Recreation” (2009-15; 2020)

Ben and Leslie’s relationship was an enemies to lovers trope, but it was anything but stereotypical. They started out with Leslie being the head in the clouds dreamer and Ben as the realist of the Parks department while their feelings for each other grew stronger, despite their inability to act on them. Ben’s proposal to Leslie in their empty future home was super endearing, but their wedding was even better, and both definitely left us in tears. While their ceremony was a bit rushed, with the Parks department throwing everything together, and the couple spewing impromptu vows, it couldn’t have been more perfect. Well, they maybe could have done without Jeremy Jamm’s interruption, but luckily Ron took care of that.

#7: Barney Meets His Daughter
“How I Met Your Mother” (2005-14)

Barney Stinson wasn’t exactly known for his sentimental moments. He explained to his friends that he would never be a one-woman man, but that all changed when he met little Ellie. He had been indifferent to his future child, but his tune totally changed when she was born. He told her how everything he has is hers, forever, and we couldn’t help but get emotional watching him get misty at the sight of his baby girl. Lily giving birth to Marvin, and naming him after Marshall’s dad, got us in the feels too, but Barney meeting his baby in the finale is pretty hard to beat.

#6: Schmidt Proposes to Cece
“New Girl” (2011-18)

Schmidt and Cece didn’t exactly hit it off the first time they met, but one of their earlier encounters would end up playing a pivotal role in their engagement. Schmidt was a perpetual playboy, and in the beginning he and Cece were secretly hooking up while navigating their feelings. When Schmidt confessed his love for Cece and she reciprocated, we were jumping for joy. But, the flashback to their earlier interaction with the douchebag jar, paired with Schmidt saying he knew he was going to marry her from the moment he met her, left us sobbing. Their wedding day was just as heartwarming, and we can’t help but smile over the fact that these two ended up together.

#5: The Gang Surprises Rosa
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (2013-21)

Rosa isn’t known for dishing out the tears on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” but this sentimental moment with her colleagues brought on the waterworks. She revealed first to Boyle, then to her coworkers, that she’s bisexual, and everyone was supportive. She was noticeably more relaxed when telling her chosen family her secret than she was when she went to dinner with her parents. They were less than thrilled about her coming out, but the 99 had her back. They hosted a game night for her to show how much they care about her as they were happy to be her stand-in family, and we couldn’t have been more choked up by the gesture.

#4: Simply the Best
“Schitt’s Creek” (2015-20)

This Canadian show was chock full of heartwarming, wholesome moments. A lot of those moments happened between David and Patrick. Who among us wasn’t an emotional wreck when Patrick proposed, or when they got married during the finale? But, the most tender and romantic scene shared between the two arguably came during open mic night at their store. David was taken aback when Patrick started singing an acoustic version of Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best,” and we, along with David, melted. David returned the favor by lip syncing the original song for his paramore a few episodes later, and we truly couldn’t love this couple more if we tried.

#3: Sheldon’s Speech
“The Big Bang Theory” (2007-19)

The most sappy moments on this show usually came from unexpected sources. Sheldon was not normally emotional, so when he was, it’s incredibly touching. In the finale, his friends were all fed up with his selfishness, and he surprised everyone by dedicating his Nobel Prize acceptance speech to them. If this didn’t already turn us into emotional messes, the final episode is made that much more meaningful when we got to see the episode of “Young Sheldon” that directly followed the finale. We saw all of Sheldon’s friends as kids, knowing that one day they’d be together, and it’s safe to say someone needed to sing us “Soft Kitty” to make us feel better after all of that.

#2: Jim & Pam’s Wedding
“The Office” (2005-13)

The weddings featured on the show definitely produced some tears, like when Michael surprised Dwight by coming to his wedding to Angela. But, Jim and Pam’s wedding was the most captivating of them all. We knew their special day would be a bit chaotic, with everyone from the office in attendance, not to mention Pam attempting to hide her pregnancy. So suffice it to say, a few things didn’t go as planned. Jim was able to rectify the situation though, by marrying in private with his wife-to-be on a boat in Niagara Falls, which gave them the truly special moment that they wanted in one of the most touching moments of the series.

#1: Rachel Gets off the Plane
“Friends” (1994-2004)

There was no shortage of cry-inducing moments during the “Friends” finale, and watching Ross run after Rachel to stop her from going to Paris had us at the edge of our seats. We were sure she would go with him once he finally tracked her down, but when she got on the plane, our hearts sank. But, when Ross hears her voicemail, and it was revealed that she was standing in his doorway, the tears started flowing uncontrollably. We were thrilled, not only because Rachel was getting back together with Ross, but also her return meant the whole gang would be staying in the same state, and that’s all we could have wanted from the end of this beloved series.
