Top 20 Unhealthiest Desserts In The World
#20: Hot Fudge Sundae
There are few things as comforting as a hot fudge sundae. The ice cream, the hot fudge topping - it all brings back such great childhood memories and is the go-to for many of us when trying to get over a broken relationship as well. However, while it may help cure heartache, it can also cure healthiness if eaten too often. The exact numbers will vary depending on the ice cream used, the serving size and whether or not you add whipped cream - but let’s take two of the most popular hot fudge sundaes as examples. The one from McDonald’s clocks in at 330 calories and 44 grams of sugar, while Dairy Queen is 290 calories and 36 grams of sugar.
#19: Hostess Chocolate Cupcakes
We guess we could give you the nutritional facts for one Hostess cupcake. But given that we often purchase them two to a pack, let’s all be honest with ourselves here and admit that eating one and putting the other one aside for another day isn’t how it goes. And that means, finishing off that two-pack is 340 calories, 12 grams of fat, 58 grams of carbs and 38 grams of sugar. To put just that sugar number in some kind of perspective - that’s about 76% of the daily recommended value for added sugars based on a 2000 calorie intake. So, if you have the willpower… stick to one per serving.
#18: Sara Lee Chocolate Crème Pie
The subheading on the package for Sara Lee’s Chocolate Crème Pie says, “Rich & Delicious” - and we would wholeheartedly agree with that description. The issue is what makes it so yummy - and that’s due to the crazy amount of fats and sugars in it. In fact, sugar is literally the first item on the list of ingredients - even before water. Third on the list - after water - is hydrogenated palm oil. And in case you missed it, back in 2015 the FDA deemed partially hydrogenated oil unsafe and linked it to thousands of heart attacks each year. We should also mention that one serving (a 1/5th portion of the pie) brings with it 450 calories!
#17: Milka Chocolate Oreo Bar
Milka is a 120+ year old Swiss chocolate company that’s been producing their delicious products in Germany since 1901. One of said delicious products is their chocolate bar filled with Oreo cream and cookie pieces. Those who've tried it will probably agree that it is as amazing as it sounds. But it's also as unhealthy as you probably assume it is as well. A mere 25 gram serving is 140 calories - with 78 of those coming from fat. And speaking of fats, those same 25 grams are also filling you up with a quarter of your recommended daily saturated fat intake as well as 12 grams of sugar. Chocolate and Oreos are hard to resist - so, at least stick to the serving size.
#16: Carrot Cake
Yes, carrots are very good for you. But let’s not forget that carrot cake is still…. CAKE! And as such it has sugar and fats and, of course, that delicious cream cheese frosting. Needless to say, the exact unhealthiness numbers will vary greatly depending on the specific carrot cake (store bought vs. homemade, brand, etc). However, just browsing through a few different brands and recipes we saw everything from 280 to over 800 calories per serving, with fat numbers reaching as high as 41 grams and sugar hitting 64 grams. Even on the low end, 14g of fat and 22g of sugar aren’t easy to ignore when it comes to one’s health.
#15: Klondike Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich
Usually getting two for one is a good thing - but when it comes to your health, getting ice cream and chocolate chip cookies isn’t ideal. And that is exactly what you get with Klondike Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich - which is a whole bunch of ice cream sandwiched between two chocolate chip cookies. Speaking of sandwiches, the amount of carbs in this dessert are more than what you get from two slices of basic white bread. Each of these ice cream sandwiches also fills you up with 17 grams of sugar and 23% of your daily recommended intake of saturated fats. We might have to start asking ourselves what would we do to not get a Klondike bar.
#14: Entenmann's Chocolate Chip Iced Cake
As Elaine learned, Entenmann's cakes won’t fool vintage pastry appraisers. And as we learned, they won’t fool your body into thinking they’re healthy. Take the Entenmann's Chocolate Chip Iced Cake for example. Actually just take 1/6th of it and you’ll be ingesting 22 grams of fat and 38 grams of sugar. As well as 220 mg of sodium - which is more than you probably assume when you think of dessert. Then there’s also the fact that of all the Entenmann’s cakes, this one has the highest calorie count - you’re looking at 400 per serving.
#13: The Cheesecake Factory Ultimate Red Velvet Cake
On “The Big Bang Theory,” Leonard once referred to Penny’s job as a waitress at The Cheesecake Factory as a carbohydrate delivery system. And he wasn’t wrong. In fact, when it comes to their Ultimate Red Velvet Cake, each slice delivers 49 carbs to whoever eats it. Although Leonard could’ve also called her a calorie, sugar and fat delivery system as well, given that each slice of said cake earns you 540, 37g and 36g respectively. Eat this one too often and you’ll likely be going from the Cheesecake Factory to the hospital factory. So moderation please!
#12: Pecan Pie
Whether you’re a “When Harry Met Sally” fan or not, most of us are proud to partake in some pecan pie every now and then. However, based on the nutritional info, it really should be only every now and then. Like with the carrot cake, don’t be fooled by the pecans. Yes, they are a good source of some nutrients and most of their fat is the “good” monounsaturated kind. However, when in pie form you can be looking at over 500 calories per slice and close to 50% of your daily fat intake. And we didn’t even mention the sugar yet - which can easily top 30 grams per slice.
#11: Betty Crocker Mug Treats Soft-Baked Chocolate Chip Cookie
What's better than a chocolate chip cookie? How about one in a mug that you can eat with a spoon. Okay, well we don't know if it's better, but it sure is good. And it's easy to make. Just empty the contents of Betty Crocker Mug Treats Soft-Baked Chocolate Chip Cookie mix into a mug - add a little water - stick it in the microwave - squeeze on the fudge topping, and enjoy. However, while you're enjoying your spoonfuls of soft-baked cookie, be aware that you'll also be enjoying a whopping 72g of carbs, 50 - yes 50 - grams of sugar and an impressive 400 calories. So grab a couple other spoons also, because this one is definitely a case of 'sharing is caring (for your health).’
#10: M&M'S Cookie Sandwiches with Vanilla Ice Cream
Imagine taking in a quarter of your daily saturated fat allowance with one ice cream sandwich. Well, you don’t have to imagine it if your dessert happens to be an M&M Cookie Sandwich with Vanilla Ice Cream. While vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two cookies with M&Ms in them sounds amazing, the 37g of carbohydrates and the 25g of sugar per sandwich sound less than amazing when it comes to the well being of our bodies. Oh ya, if you don’t like vanilla ice cream, well they also come in chocolate flavor.
#9: Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies
Sure, these fudgy, chocolatey brownies with candy pieces on top taste out of this world. But on this planet, Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies aren’t the healthiest option when it comes to satisfying your sweet tooth cravings. Once again serving size is important - and in this case, the numbers we’re looking at are for just one cosmic brownie. And those numbers are 11 grams of fat, 41 grams of carbs, just under 300 calories and almost 50% of the daily recommended intake of added sugars. Debbie might be little but those are some rather large numbers.
#8: Pillsbury Cookie Dough with Oreo Pieces
Like bacon, almost everything is better with Oreos. However, they sure don't make anything healthier - including this Pillsbury Cookie Dough with Oreo Pieces. When baked, of course, this makes cookies with Oreo pieces in them. Our mouths are watering as we write this, which means devouring these with any kind of moderation would be a mighty feat. Although that is really what you have to do with these sweet treats, given that just one cookie is packed with 12g of sugar, 8g of fat and an eye-opening 170 calories. Trust us, you don’t want to do the math on 2, 3 or 4 of these suckers.
#7: Fudge
The good thing about fudge is that it often comes in small serving sizes. The bad thing about fudge is that it’s so good we usually eat more than one piece in a sitting. And that can add up fast with a measly one ounce serving of the stuff can sometimes provide upwards of 130 calories. Things may vary depending on the type of fudge and specific ingredients used, but there’s no denying that to make fudge you’re going to be using a good amount of sugars and fats and those numbers can add up quickly, the more you consume.
#6: Cheesecake
On the plus side, Cheesecake does tend to have more protein than other desserts due to the dairy and eggs used in its production. However, those 3-6 grams of protein per slice come with a lot of other stuff that are working against any muscle growth and weight loss goals the protein might help out with. First are the calories. There are so many different cheesecakes out there, so these numbers will obviously vary - but that one slice of dessert could be packing on anywhere from 250 to over 400 calories. Also, for a 2000 calorie-a-day diet, the AMA recommends you have no more than 13 grams of saturated fats. A slice of cheesecake can run upwards of 10 grams.
#5: Mega Stuf Oreos
We could argue all day about whether or not Mega Stuf Oreos are actually that much better than regular Oreos. But what we can’t argue about is that they are unhealthier than the OG version. Just look at the serving size info for both (which unfortunately for us isn’t a full sleeve). You’ll see that just 2 Mega Stuf cookies have more calories, more fat, and more sugar than 3 of the regular ones. However, if we’re being honest, your best Oreo choice has to be the Oreo Thins, as they offer a serving size of 4 cookies and still fewer calories and grams of fat and sugar.
#4: Pumpkin Roll
Given that pumpkin rolls are a very seasonal dessert, many of us are partaking of it on Thanksgiving when all of our health and diet plans take a backseat to mounds of yummy food. So while the nutritional value of pumpkin rolls might not be foremost in our minds as we undo our belts and watch football, they probably should be. Pumpkin rolls have surprisingly high amounts of sugar and fat and, depending on the brand, can reach upwards of 300 calories per serving. Too much of this roll can add a new roll to our midsection, so moderation is once again key.
#3: Banana Split
While fruit is a smart, healthy dessert choice, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that adding ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate sauce to said fruit, isn’t. And we’re not talking a little of each either. A proper banana split features upwards of three big scoops of ice cream, each topped with whipped cream and covered with chocolate sauce. So get ready for some outrageous numbers, because a 490 gram serving of banana split is going to hit you with 20 grams of saturated fats, over 100 grams of sugar, more than 150 grams of carbs and a calorie count that could reach as high as 1000. Word of advice - take the “split” in the name seriously and share it with multiple people.
#2: Molten Lava Cake
If we were making a list of the most fun desserts, this cake with the flowing chocolate center would be high up there. Unfortunately, it’s also high up on the unhealthy list. There are few dessert moments more enjoyable than that first forking of a molten lava cake as that choco-lava flows out onto the plate. But be aware that with all that enjoyment comes a whole lot of calories. How many exactly will depend on what brand you get or what restaurant you’re at, but it’s definitely hundreds per serving - with the one at Chili’s clocking in at over 1000 calories, 62 grams of fat and over 100 grams of sugar. Maybe just stick to the baby back ribs?
#1: Apple Pie
Forget Jim’s completely unsanitary use of an apple pie in the 1999 teen sex comedy “American Pie”- consuming the dessert as intended is also a rather unhealthy choice. What could be so bad? It’s just apples and pie crust right? Well, if it were just apples that wouldn’t be a problem and the expression could be an apple pie a day keeps the doctor away. But instead it’s apples, sugar and a crust often made with refined carbohydrates. It will surprise many to learn that one slice can have 300-400 calories, 20g of sugar, 43g of carbs and up to 25% of your daily saturated fat allowance. Instead of keeping doctors away, eating too much apple pie might have you visiting them more often.
