For this list, we’ll be looking at fun facts related to the upcoming Marvel film “Black Panther”, set to hit theaters on February 16th, 2018.
#5: The Film’s Main Themes Are Responsibility and Identity
Ryan Coogler, known for “Fruitvale Station” and the 2015 “Rocky” spin-off “Creed”, was the lucky winner of the “Black Panther” directorial sweepstakes. In describing the central theme of his comic book movie, Coogler was quite forthcoming in what exactly the film will be about. Responsibility and identity will serve as the film’s thematic anchors, with the director observing, “It separates the good-guys from the villains.” Seeing as how T’Challa is the king of Wakanda, we can see how these themes would be appropriate. And with Chadwick Boseman signed on for five films, the character will have plenty of time to work out his issues!
#4: Ava DuVernay Was in Talks to Direct
When a solo Black Panther film was announced it drew the attention of directors the world over, including Ava DuVernay. The Academy Award nominee known for racially driven work such as “13th” and “Selma” was a natural choice to helm a film about the first black superhero in mainstream comic book history. And while she did meet with Marvel to discuss the project in 2015, it ultimately wasn’t a good fit for the director. DuVernay later remarked that “Marvel has a certain way of doing things” and that she and the studio didn't see eye to eye. Sometimes it's better to bow out early than butt heads later.
#3: Michael B. Jordan Almost Played Falcon
When Sam Wilson – aka Falcon – was gearing up to make his big screen debut in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” many actors read for the part; and one of them was Michael B. Jordan. But, while the future Human Torch was briefly considered, he was ultimately passed over for Anthony Mackie. However, Jordan found another way to leave his mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he was cast in 2018’s “Black Panther”. Jordan will play Erik Killmonger, the film’s primary antagonist. In addition to bringing him officially into the MCU, the role also reunites him with his “Fruitvale Station” and “Creed” director Ryan Coogler.
#2: Wesley Snipes Was Almost Black Panther
Okay let us rephrase. Wesley Snipes almost played Black Panther in the early 90’s. At the time, Snipes was one of the hottest actors on the planet. Add to that the fact that comic book adaptations were on the rise, and the project seemed like a surefire hit. Alas, a number of factors lead to the film remaining in development hell for years. Some of these issues included problems with the script and Snipes’ own involvement with the “Blade” franchise. Snipes wasn’t the only actor attached to the role, either; Anthony Mackie, Djimon Hounsou and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje were all considered but ultimately passed over, only for them to land roles in other Marvel films!

Over the years numerous actors, directors and writers have been attached to the project, though none were successful in bringing it to the big screen. Well, not until Kevin Feige came around. The Marvel Studios president felt it was time for the world’s first black superhero to crack the Marvel Cinematic Universe with an appearance in “Captain America: Civil War”. Now comes the next big step: a solo film. And we can’t wait!
