Top 5 Worst Makeup Trends
#5: Bubble Nails
With most of the makeup trends we’re going to talk about on this list, we at least understand the motivation behind them... however abysmal the end result may be. Some are an attempt at fuller looking lips or a more sculpted face, but this trend... defies all logic. Bubble nails are achieved by layering tons of acrylic polish to create a domed effect. Often they feature simple colors, other times they involve more intricate designs - but they are ALWAYS kind of weird-looking. Not only is the end result eye-catching in the all the wrong ways, but it seems like a seriously cumbersome style, sure to get in the way as you go about your day.
#4: Lip Liner Mismatch
Lip liner can be a useful tool to help you achieve a clean line for your lip color, but typically... the trick is to find a liner that matches your lipstick as closely as possible. At some point however, someone decided to use a dark liner with a paler shade in the middle. It must have been an attempt to make lips look plumper... but the resulting look falls drastically short of any imagined outcome. It’s neither effective, nor flattering. A similar recent trend is overlining your lips outside of their natural lines in order to achieve a fuller look. Again… “A” for effort, but another “F” as far as lip-plumping tricks go.
#3: Bronzer Overload
Most women have a pan of bronzer in their makeup drawer, but do they know how to use it? There was a period in the early 2000s when people seemed to go in with a big fluffy brush and apply bronzer to their entire face like it was going out of style. And guess what? Thankfully, IT DID. But despite the fact this particular look has been put out of its misery, people continue to misuse this versatile product. There’s nothing wrong with using bronzer to give yourself a sun-kissed look. It’s best to use a light touch, applying the product to the top of your forehead, your cheekbones and your jawline.
#2: Over the Top Contour
Contrary to popular belief, contouring is nothing new in the makeup artist community. While it seems like this trend exploded sometime around 2015, it has been used by professionals to create more chiseled facial features for decades. Using a bit of contour and highlight powder to define your cheeks and facial structure can be extremely effective, but as with everything in the makeup world, too much of a good thing can be a very BAD thing. People have taken this trend to new heights with cream contouring that can give an exaggerated and unrealistic look. As far as your face is concerned, subtlety is key, meaning that highlighter overload is equally undesirable.
#1: Pencil Thin Eyebrows
Most makeup trends are gone as quickly as it takes to wash your face at the end of the night, but unfortunately some beauty missteps take longer to recover from. In the 90s, women plucked their brows into oblivion to achieve the look that was trendy at the time, and for some, it proved permanent. Luckily, since fuller eyebrows have come back in style, there are countless products out there in every price range to help you rectify past mistakes. One of the latest beauty trends is microblading, which uses tattooing techniques to create long-lasting realistic looking fuller brows. How will we look back on the technique in 10 years? Only time will tell.
