Top 50 Most Surprising SNL Cameos

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today were counting down our picks for the guest appearances on NBCs Saturday Night Live that came out of nowhere to shock audiences.
#50: Mike Myers
This isnt the last time youll see this beloved SNL alum appear on our list today. Nor will it be the last time youll see him play an evil genius, but more on that later. For now, were focusing on Myers left-field cameo as the worlds richest man. In a sketch parodying a truly disastrous meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Myers unexpectedly popped up as Elon Musk. Passing resemblance aside, the Waynes World and Austin Powers star is a perfect marriage of actor and subject, with Myers knack for zany physical comedy embodying Musks well lets call them eccentricities.
#49: Jesse Pinkman
Remember the Breaking Bad fever that swept the globe in the AMC crime dramas final season? Like Beatlemania but for hardened meth kingpins, Breaking Bad was seemingly everywhere in 2013 even on the SNL mainstage. The cold open of the 39th season premiere featured Jay Pharoah reprising his scary-good Barack Obama impression to espouse the values of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare. The president brings out a motley crew of Americans who give testimonials as to Obamacares awesomeness. One of those Americans? Multiple Emmy winner Aaron Paul, reprising his role as Breaking Bads Jesse Pinkman. Pinkman shares a very familiar story about the consequences of a lack of affordable healthcare, but given that the shows series finale aired the next day, declines to give away the ending.
#48: Ryan Reynolds & Tracy Morgan
When former cast member Will Ferrell hosts, all bets are off. Take this season 45 monologue, for instance. Although the actors efforts to rile up the crowd seem to go off without a hitch, hes almost immediately derailed by the distracting presence of his Spirited co-star Ryan Reynolds. Not only is the dreamy Deadpool star distracting in and of himself, "Spirited" wouldnt come out for another three years after this sketch aired, making it even more surprising that the two were pals. Ferrells rhythm is completely thrown off, and he only digs his hole deeper and deeper. Once he starts doing a Tracy Morgan impression, the real Morgan steps in to bail him out of his awkward encounter. Phew!
#47: Jim Gaffigan
In the run-up to the 2024 United States presidential election, there was only one question on the nations mind. If Maya Rudolph is playing Vice President Kamala Harris on SNL, then who would be taking on the role of her genial, folksy running mate, Minnesota governor Tim Walz? While big names like Steve Martin and Jason Sudeikis were floated (with Martin even admitting that he turned down Lorne Michaels offer), the part ultimately went rather unexpectedly to comedian Jim Gaffigan. The choice came as a surprise to SNL fans, given that Gaffigan had no prior connection to the show. Nevertheless, Gaffigans Walz impression (which the comedian has since revealed is based on his brother) was a hit, and he returned for a series of cameos.
#46: Joe Jonas
By now, chances are youve heard of the whole Morgan Wallen, get me to Gods country controversy. For the uninitiated, the country singer was booked for his second SNL gig on the 50th seasons 15th episode, hosted by Oscar winner Mikey Madison. Rumors swirled that Wallen had clashed with the shows cast and crew, and savvy Internet commentators pointed to a pretaped sketch in which he had declined a role that was written for him. Scrambling to find a replacement, the SNL team settled on the middle Jo-Bro. Wallen, meanwhile, created further controversy upon his abrupt exit from the SNL goodbyes.
#45: Charlie Day
Was anyone else pumped to see this impromptu Horrible Bosses reunion on SNL? Well, maybe its just us, but either way, its hard to deny the hilarity engineered by the grouping of Jason Sudeikis, Jamie Foxx, and Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Day. In line with the Maine Justice sketchs recurring premise, cast member Bobby Moynihan plays an out-of-towner who has the misfortune of winding up in a wildly colorful, weirdly Cajun courtroom. Antagonized by Foxx and Sudeikis respective bailiff and judge, Moynihans character is pushed further into a corner by Days local congressman, whose near-incomprehensible speech doesnt bode well for the defendant.
#44: Bradley Cooper & Ed Helms
In the face of overwhelming adversity, you just have to believe in yourself and then react completely incredulously when you find out youve failed. Thats the basic premise of this season 38 sketch, in which episode host Zach Galifianakis demands answers as to why hes lost a Jennifer Aniston lookalike contest. Galifianakis onstage tantrum is exacerbated when the actual winners take the stage that would be Radley Cooper and Ted Pelms... aka Galifianakis Hangover co-stars Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms. Eventually, Galifianakis comes around, and a stage full of Aniston hopefuls belt out Thats What Friends Are For... which they inexplicably seem to think is the Friends theme song.
#43: Jennifer Aniston
Hey, another Jennifer Aniston-centric entry? What a coincidence almost like we planned it that way. Anyway, this Weekend Update bit initially seems like an excuse for Vanessa Bayer to trot out one of her signature impressions. Not that were complaining, of course Bayers gift for impressions consistently made her a joy to watch on SNL. Bayers Rachel Green mercilessly spoofs 90s sitcom trends at least, until the actual Aniston shows up (and were not talking Radley Cooper and Ted Pelms). Confronting Bayer about her impression, Aniston eventually gives in to the SNL cast members fangirling, and the two have a sort of Rachel-off. The 90s are truly forever.
#42: Ben Stiller & Robert De Niro
The United States was a wild, chaotic place during the first Trump presidency. The same could be said of Saturday Night Live around the same time. With the White House an ongoing media circus, SNL pounced on the news coming out of it with a cavalcade of high-profile guest stars. Two of those recurring stars included Ben Stiller as Trumps lawyer Michael Cohen, and Oscar winner Robert De Niro as former FBI director Robert Mueller[a]. The actors, who had appeared onscreen together as part of the Fockers franchise, reenacted a scene from Meet the Parents on SNL in character, of course.
#41: Adam Sandler
If youre at all familiar with the Happy Gilmore and Uncut Gems stars tenure at Saturday Night Live, then youll likely know that it ended less than amicably. Sandler, alongside friend and fellow cast member Chris Farley, was unceremoniously fired in 1995, and didnt appear on the show again until 2019, when he hosted for the very first time. Since then, Sandler and series creator Lorne Michaels appear to have patched things up, with the comedian appearing in this gross-out sketch during a December 2024 episode hosted by Chris Rock. Nearly everyone in the sketch broke and Sandler himself is only partially to blame.
#40: Psy
Time for another stroll down memory lane. Remember Gangnam Style? The song and its accompanying dance craze were, as anyone around in 2012 couldve told you, completely inescapable. As such, it was fairly easy to predict that SNL would tackle the ubiquitous Korean phenomenon in some way. And tackle it they did, in truly spectacular fashion on the season 38 premiere as hosted by Seth MacFarlane. A sketch set at a Lids store finds its staff having fun with a button that spontaneously summons Bobby Moynihans poorly-aged Psy impression. Things only escalate until Psy himself is unveiled as the sketchs final boss, so to speak.
#39: Jake Gyllenhaal
You have John Mulaney to thank for this weirdly specific cameo. Mulaneys 2018 sketch Diner Lobster started a series featuring several sequels, each of which focuses on a food item you just dont order from wherever that particular sketch is set. In this case, a travelers attempt to buy airport sushi goes well, about as well as youd expect. The sketch goes on to poke fun at the often bizarre things one might witness at the airport. One such oddity is Jake Gyllenhaals guy who always travels in pajamas performing a riff on Wickeds Defying Gravity, which speaks for itself.
#38: Trisha Paytas
Its kind of an unspoken rule that, after the SNL musical guests second performance, the show starts to go slightly off the rails. Such was the case on this December 2024 episode hosted by Gladiator II star and Oscar nominee Paul Mescal. After Shaboozey performed his smash hit A Bar Song, four friends touch base and compare their respective Spotify Wrapped playlists. Mescals character brags that anti-instrumentalist sound guru Satoshi Guttman[b], as played by Bowen Yang, is his number one artist. As Mescals friends try to figure out exactly what that means, his character pulls up one of the off-kilter Guttmans podcast episodes featuring none other than polarizing YouTuber and viral sensation Trisha Paytas.
#37: Anderson Cooper
Bill Haders departure from SNL was bittersweet for many reasons. Perhaps chiefly among them was the fact that it meant Haders fan-favorite character Stefon would no longer appear on a semi-regular basis. Given Stefons popularity among the shows audience, SNL succeeded admirably at giving the character a proper send-off. Keeping in line with the running Weekend Update gag that Stefon and host Seth Meyers were romantically involved, Stefon dramatically runs off the Weekend Update set after Meyers fails to commit. Meyers is convinced by Amy Poehler to chase after Stefon and prevent him from getting married to CNNs Anderson Cooper who is depicted as Meyers mortal enemy.
#36: Mark Zuckerberg
How many bergs is too many? Thats what this January 2011 episode hosted by Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg attempted to find out. Eisenberg, hosting to promote The Social Network in which he plays Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, is confronted by Andy Sambergs Zuckerberg impression in his monologue. In a distinctly meta twist, the real real Mark Zuckerberg is revealed to be backstage with Lorne Michaels who seemingly doubts Zuck's identity. After the two Bergs compare notes on playing Zuckerberg, Mark and Jesse have a predictably awkward interaction in which Zuck reveals his true feelings about The Social Network.
#35: Mick Jagger
Two Jagger cameos for the price of one! What did Lorne Michaels ever do to get so lucky? When Puerto Rican pop sensation Bad Bunny did double-duty as host and musical guest in October 2023, he had a murderers row of talent backing him up. Featuring multiple cameos from Pedro Pascal, a pretaped appearance by Fred Armisen, and even a drop-in by Lady Gaga, all were dwarfed by the almost inexplicable appearance of the legendary Rolling Stones frontman in not one, but two separate sketches. In the first, Jagger plays Papa to Bad Bunny and Marcello Hernandez[c]s characters in a telenovela parody. In the second, hes Sister Kevin, a bad influence to a misbehaving convent of nuns. Sure, why not?
#34: Tim Kaine
Former SNL writer John Mulaney is already a classic modern-day SNL host, and one of the shows fastest to ever hit the revered Five-Timers Club. So you already know that, whenever he hosts, its going to be must-watch TV. Case in point: this edition of recurring sketch Whats That Name, in which Mulaneys character is quizzed on figures of the then-upcoming 2024 election. After proclaiming it the most important election in American history, Mulaney was flabbergasted by the appearance of Virginia senator and Hilary Clintons 2016 running mate Tim Kaine. Kaine devastatingly reminds Mulaney that he had also referred to that years election as the most important ever. Woof, how people forget
#33: Dan Crenshaw
This is a cameo that came as a shock at the time, but makes all too much sense in retrospect. In November 2018, Pete Davidson appeared on Weekend Update to roast Republican candidates in that years midterm elections. His joke about former NAVY Seal Dan Crenshaw landed him in hot water with conservatives which led to the only possible way that Davidson could redeem himself. That would be getting roasted by Crenshaw himself the following week. As part of a merciless, unsparing roast-fest, Crenshaw compared Davidson to Martin Shorts Jack Frost from The Santa Clause 3... and also referenced the SNL cast members recent breakup with pop star Ariana Grande.
#32: Lindsey Buckingham
If Kenan Thompson is going to be on SNL for the rest of time, then so be it. But why, then, cant we have more What Up with That? At one point considered the versatile Thompsons signature sketch, the bit went away with Jason Sudeikis and Fred Armisens respective departures from the show. One of its recurring gags was Bill Haders nonspeaking role as Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, who would be invited back week after week after consistently being denied a chance to be interviewed by Thompsons overzealous Diondre Cole[d]. Finally, a May 2011 episode hosted by Ed Helms allowed the actual Lindsey Buckingham to deliver a rip-roaring acoustic guitar solo not that Cole seemed interested as to why there were two Lindsey Buckinghams.
#31: Stormy Daniels
Originating from yet another first Trump term era sketch with a boatload of celebrity cameos, it was almost hard to choose who to pick. From Martin Shorts boorish Harold Bornstein to Jimmy Fallon and Scarlett Johanssons slimy Jared and Ivanka, this season 43 cold open had everything going for it. Airing in the dead heat of the former adult film stars legal battle with President Trump, the studio audiences bewildered reaction to Daniels appearance pretty much says it all. While a storm wasnt exactly a-comin, as we all know now, Stormy felt like a major, especially topical get for the show.
#30: Daniel Craig
When Rami Malek and Kenan Thompson audition to play a music icon, they try to match Princes singular energy. The two each put their own spin on the musician until Daniel Craig interrupts them. Thinking hes auditioning to play a literal prince, the James Bond star arrives in his own silly outfit. The British performer is also game for anything with a goofy appearance. Hes not afraid to make fun of himself, showing that he doesnt take his profession too seriously. His impressions end up winning over the audience in a major way. Stealing the sketch and the role, Craig reminds people of his comedy chops.
#29: Glen Powell
In this monologue, Sydney Sweeney pokes fun at her celebrity status and personal life. One of the funniest moments comes when she addresses her rumored affair with co-star Glen Powell. This leads to a hilarious cutaway, with Powell there to deliver a silent performance. Its nice to see these Anyone but You stars still working together and playing pranks on their fans. Turning their fake relationship into a joke, both stars find a way to laugh off the tabloids. They arent a couple in real life, but they certainly have enough chemistry to pull off this moment.
#28: Mark Hamill
On this home-shopping show, the presenters try to sell off Star Wars collectibles. The segment then takes a shocking and hilarious turn when they bring out Mark Hamill. Appearing to be a hostage, the actor tries to go along with this ridiculous situation. Hamill has to contend with the inept hosts and even deliver some memorable quotes. There are a few more surprises as the sketch continues, including an entertaining interaction with Harrison Ford. The Luke Skywalker performer gets to show off some of his vocal impressions and joke about his breakthrough role. With this enjoyable premise, the guest helps to satirize crazed fan bases with this appearance.
#27: Travis Kelce
On this sports program, the presenters mention the prevalence of Taylor Swift at NFL games. The guys then go off the rails mentioning various references to the musician, her relationships, and her music catalog. It all culminates in a funny cameo from Travis Kelce. The latter just wants to talk football, but only has a brief moment at the end to say his piece. Kelce adds a ton of charisma to this skit as he avoids talking about his high-profile romance with Swift. Its even more surprising to see the athlete show up as the partnership hit viral status.
#26: Julia Stiles
Appearing on Weekend Update to discuss holiday gift ideas, Chloe Fineman offers up a unique substitute to the usual cliches. She reenacts a scene from Save the Last Dance with all of its unintentionally hilarious details. Fineman also welcomes the films star Julia Stiles to help her complete the routine. Fans of the 2001 movie will enjoy the performers strange moves, not to mention the bizarre context behind the entire performance. Stiles steps in with all the confidence of her original role. Her appearance elevates this segment into a goofy and nostalgic takedown of the teen romance.
#25: Nicolas Cage
In a recurring segment, Andy Samberg plays Nicolas Cage and welcomes other actors to chat about his profession. This time he welcomes the real man in a fun subversion of the premise. Cage plays along with Sambergs impression, but he also throws out some hilarious critiques. The star takes aim at his co-stars exaggerated features and over-the-top delivery. They even come together to satirize Cages filmography, discussing the outrageous elements of his projects such as Ghost Rider. The absurd idea also has both men complimenting each other before its all over. In the end, they hint at their next adventure with an incredible reference to National Treasure.
#24: Two Wild & Crazy Duos
Instead of using three bachelors, this dating show includes two iconic duos from SNL history. Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg reprise their roles as the R&B singers, bringing their own compositions with hilarious lyrics. The other other competitors are the Festrunk brothers, better known as the Wild and Crazy Guys. With a sketch this chock-full of legends, you cant go wrong. There are enough funny references and jokes in here to make you forget the original premise. Its especially fun to see Dan Aykroyd and Steve Martin return with the same energy as they brought in the 1970s. Even if the scene flies off the rails, the performers still bring the laughs in this endlessly entertaining segment.
#23: Janet Reno
Taking on an unlikely role, Will Ferrell made the most of his Janet Reno impression. His version of the politician loves to dance and has a stubborn personality, making the real womans cameo even more surprising here. She busts through the wall and matches Ferrells impersonation in a hilarious shake-up of this recurring sketch series. Showing that she isnt too self-serious, Reno plays well opposite a comedy legend. Shes not the typical performer, but the leader shows that shes a good sport that can dish out funny jabs of her own. The attorney general also sticks around to share an unforgettable dance with her scene partner.
#22: The Dictator & Martin Scorsese
Sacha Baron Cohens Admiral General Aladeen stops by to plug The Dictator, mentioning the biased critiques of his film. He intimidates various people for positive reviews including a kidnapped Martin Scorsese. The acclaimed director is electrocuted until he gives Aladeen the right answer, playing into the dark humor of this segment. Scorsese is especially game to show up for a movie that isnt even his own. Playing well off of Cohens genius, the filmmaker shows that he has potential in more comedic roles. His final sendoff even includes a few fun references for cinephiles to enjoy.
#21: Dr. Evil
In light of evil headlines, Mike Myers returned to SNL with one of his best movie characters. He brought back this villain for a funny cold open about the North Korea and Sony debacle. Dr. Evils speech feels straight out of an Austin Powers script, complete with some hilarious jokes aimed at everyone from Kim Jong Un to James Franco. There are even a few references to the spy series that spawned this character in the first place. With some great makeup work, the actor disappears into the role once more in a laugh-inducing sketch. Myers even gets to make fun of himself with a Love Guru shoutout. By the end of this scene, he proves that he hasnt lost any of his sketch-comedy talents.
#20: Eminem
In a parody of Eminems Stan, Pete Davidson plays Stu, a young man with an increasingly unhealthy obsession with getting his hands on a PS5. Throughout the skit, were teased with potential cameos from Dido and even Elton John but, these turn out to be fellow castmates, Kate McKinnon and Bowen Yang. But even as the words Slim Shady flash up on Stus TV, we still cant quite believe that were actually seeing The Real Slim Shady. As he unwraps a PS5, he has some choice words for Stu. This sketch was the Christmas gift we didnt even know we wanted.
#19: Brad Pitt
In an interview, Dr. Fauci joked that he would want Brad Pitt to play him on SNL, and his wish was their command. In the cold opening for their At Home series, Pitt adopts Faucis recognizable voice and mannerisms to address some of the misinformation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic particularly those shared by a certain individual. Pitt even received an Emmy nomination for his cameo, and high praise from the Doctor himself. Before wrapping up, the actor removes his costume to pay tremendous gratitude to the real Dr. Fauci as well as everyone who has been working tirelessly on the frontlines.
#18: Judge Judy
Cheri Oteris impression of this no-nonsense, badass TV Judge is one of her best and most memorable recurring characters from her SNL tenure. However, there is one person who thinks that theres still room for improvement. Mid-skit, Cheri is interrupted by the one and only Judge Judy, who has come as an iron-fisted justice to show Cherie what it means to spit fire in the courtroom. If you thought Cheris Judge Judy was direct, you aint seen nothing yet. Cherie fights for a piece of the action but she's simply no match for the OG.
#17: Ellie Kemper, Ed Helms, Nancy Carell, & Jenna Fischer
When Steve Carell hosted the show in 2018, he made it crystal clear that an Office reboot was not in the cards. But then it isnt just fans who are disappointed by the news. Carells old castmates appear amongst the audience to jump on the reboot bandwagon and try to persuade him to think of the money. Arguably though, the most hilarious cameo comes from Carells wife and former SNL cast member Nancy and their kids, who are also keen to see the show revived. He invites his co-stars on stage and we wait with bated breath... for the announcement that never comes. Well, at least we got this mini-reunion.
#16: Leonardo DiCaprio
Riding high on his Oscar nomination, Jonah Hill is brought crashing back down to earth when the audience shows more interest in his Wolf of Wall Street co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio. But although Leos name is mentioned several times, it doesnt seem probable that he would suddenly walk out onto the 8H stage. Making his one and only appearance on the show, the Oscar-winning actor calls Hill out for acting like a big shot. He tops off his memorable cameo by reenacting one of Titanics most iconic moments. How has Lee never hosted before? Quick, someone get Lorne Michaels on the phone!
#15: Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock & Tracy Morgan
Hosting for the first time since 1984, Eddie Murphy emerged onto the stage while the audience enthusiastically chanted his name. Naturally, such a momentous occasion couldnt pass by without some surprise appearances, which is why we were thrilled when he was joined by comedy icons Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, and Dave Chappelle. After some first-rate banter including a Lizzo shout-out these cameo comedy icons pay tribute to the comedian who paved the way for their own careers especially Chappelle, who says hes been following Murphys blueprint very closely. Joined by Kenan at the end, we get to revel in some of comedys finest entertainers.
#14: Arnold Schwarzenegger
Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealons popular recurring skit featured Hans and Franz, two Austrian body-building enthusiasts who are more about the flex than the fitness. They idolize their cousin Arnold Schwarzenegger, who usually appears in the form of a cardboard cutout in the background. However, the real Schwarzenegger joined the show for a surprise cameo, too. In one skit, he invites the pair to give a fitness pep talk to some kids but it soon becomes apparent that theyre simply clueless. Not only does he take the wind out of their sails, but he also shows them how its done.
#13: Bryan Cranston
After the 2016 election, it often felt like reality was imitating fiction. Thats why it seemed rather fitting that SNL would turn to fictional TV to send up some of the unusual choices who were joining the new cabinet. Walter White is brought out of retirement to become the new head of the DEA, upon Steve Bannons recommendation. He explains how his credentials are really no different than those of his new colleagues, even faking his own death. The skit is peppered with plenty of hilarious Breaking Bad references, and his countless witty quips have us cracking up every single time.
#12: The Five-Timers Club
When Justin Timberlake made it to the "five-timers club" of celebrities who've hosted "SNL" 5 times or more, the show resurrected an occasionally recurring skit that pictures the club as an actual club, of the members-only variety. This time, the show pulled out all the stops and featured cameos from no less than 8 people: Paul Simon, Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Martin Short, Dan Aykroyd, Alec Baldwin, Candice Bergen, and Tom Hanks all make appearances. The bit about the club members entertaining themselves by forcing current "SNL" players to fight each other to the death is a particularly funny one.
#11: Alec Baldwin
After the first televised debate of the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, SNL came to rely on surprise appearances from perennial host and guest star Alec Baldwin to do comedic justice to the resort mogul's over-the-top personality and distinctive speech patterns. At times, Trump can seem like an impossible man to parody, but Baldwin always delivers the goods, walking a fine line between the real President's outrageous actions and the winking zaniness of a great SNL parody. No matter how many times he reprises the role, we never get tired of watching this master Trump satirist at work, especially whenever he shares the screen with Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer.
#10: Barry Gibb
In a recurring sketch that answers the question, What if Barry Gibb hosted a political talk show? Jimmy Fallon played the titular character, with Justin Timberlake as his brother Robin. Inviting politicians and newsmakers for interviews is great. But of course, what is a show starring two-thirds of the Bee Gees without some music? Around 10 years following the sketchs debut, the real Barry Gibb makes a surprise appearance, joining the others to sing at the end of the segment. It was certainly an exciting moment for Bee Gee fans, and we get to see Barrys humorous side, too.
#9: Matt Damon
Brett Kavanaughs Supreme Court hearing was so bizarre that it didnt require a huge leap from fact to satire. We all saw the SNL material practically write itself, so the only question left was: who would play the beer-loving nominee? Matt Damon delivers a faultless performance, mirroring some of the hearings more peculiar moments, from Kavanaughs constant sniffing and weird calendars to his intense mood swings and inexplicable rage. Reportedly Damon was only brought on board the night before the sketch was set to air; still, the payoff speaks for itself. Were almost sorry that it was only a one-off occasion.
#8: Paul McCartney
Two of Saturday Night Lives most popular hosts - Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, who have hosted the show a combined total of more than 30 times to date - waggle their egos at each other in this 2006 skit, each trying to prove that theirs has been the more illustrious hosting career of the two. Seeing the two hosts together is entertaining enough and seeing Martin Short as a waiter only adds to the fun but it's Paul McCartney's wordless appearance that really steals the show. Not even Steve Martin's quick joke (It's Paul Simon!) can hide both actors' genuine surprise at seeing Sir Paul up close and personal.
#7: Larry David
Back in 2015, SNL decided to send up the Democratic presidential primary candidates with a couple of special guest impressions. Although this cold open also featured Alec Baldwin as Virginia Senator Jim Webb, Larry David stole the show with his cantankerous, scowling Bernie Sanders impression. His spot-on cameo appearance as the famous U.S. Senator was such a big hit with audiences that the Curb Your Enthusiasm comedian has revisited it several times since then, and even appeared alongside the actual Bernie Sanders in a later sketch. For "SNL" viewers, it came as no big surprise when the two later found out they are related by blood.
#6: Sarah Palin
This cold open featuring Tina Fey's popular Sarah Palin impression starts innocently, with Fey, as Palin, taking questions from the press and giving typically silly answers. But then it cuts to a cameo montage of people criticizing Lorne Michaels for leading with the bit, including Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, and finally Sarah Palin herself. Fey is eventually notified that the actual Sarah Palin will be taking the stage, and bows out so that Palin herself can kick things off. It's a quick, tight bit with an unexpected twist, much like the time Hillary Clinton visited Kate McKinnon.
#5: Madonna
Musical guest Lady Gaga showed off her sketch comedy chops in this classic segment, which sees the singer joined on the stage by pop megastar and SNL favorite Madonna, in a surprise cameo appearance. The two play vicious and self-absorbed versions of themselves, trading venomous insults with each other as they try, and fail, to get along and perform together for the Deep House Dish music program. The skit packs in a flurry of subtle references to both singers, and pop music fame in general. Years later, the two stars actually would have a public disagreement, but that feud never reached the laugh-out-loud heights of this 2009 gem.
#4: Alex Trebek
Will Ferrell's mega-popular skits featured the future Elf actor as a worn-out, frustrated version of Jeopardy! game show host Alex Trebek, with three clueless celebrities played by cast members and guests taking the podium to answer simple pieces of trivia in the form of a question. Darrell Hammond's foul-mouthed Sean Connery impression is the first thing most people remember about it, but the last of the regular "Celebrity Jeopardy!" segments also featured a surprise cameo from the real Alex Trebek himself. He came out to help send off Ferrell from the segment... and let Hammond's Connery get in a few more off-color jabs at both their expense.
#3: Barack Obama
Back in 2007, when Barack Obama was still just a primary candidate for the office of President of the United States, he made this typically deadpan cameo on a skit set at Bill & Hillary Clinton's Halloween party. Various political guests show up in costume and share a joke or two with the beleaguered hosts; finally, a tall, slim guest approaches in an Obama novelty mask. After the usual commentary from the Clintons, their guest removes the mask to reveal... Senator Obama himself. It's a great example of the dry sense of humor Americans came to expect from Number 44 in the subsequent years of his presidency.
#2: Robert De Niro & Joe Pesci
Jim Breuer's recurring "The Joe Pesci Show" sketch featured an impression of the famous actor as a violent maniac, similar to his characters in the films "Goodfellas" and "Casino," who used any perceived slight from his guests as an excuse to assault them. The segment also often used special guests to play Robert De Niro, who would validate Pesci's anger and join in alongside him. So when the real Pesci and De Niro eventually showed up on the sketch in an unannounced double cameo, the comedic tension was almost too much. The two veteran actors played their parodied selves to a T, and brought the house down in the process.
#1: Barbra Streisand & Madonna
SNLs studio audience was already delighted enough by the surprise appearance of superstar pop singer Madonna on this episode of Mike Myers' recurring talk show sketch, but even the Material Girl was star-struck when the legendary Barbra Streisand popped in. She entered at just the right time, too, during a moment when both characters were praising her singing voice. The rare cameo by Streisand was the result of a last-minute, off-the-cuff arrangement with SNL head honcho Lorne Michaels, so none of the cast knew it was happening until it did. The surprise and admiration radiating from Madonna's face was unscripted, totally real, and impossible to forget.
Which SNL cameo surprised you the most? Are there any we missed? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!
