VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
Iceland is the most sparsely populated European nation. It is also an island and most often associated with cold weather due to a percentage of its landmass being made up of glaciers. Despite this, Iceland does have warmer areas and lots of things to see and do. In addition to the beautiful, mountainous countryside, the country has an excellent cuisine, vibrant city and nightlife, luxurious hotels and spas heated by nature through geothermal energy. There are, of course, many sports and activities that you can enjoy as well. In this video, http://www.WatchMojo.com continues our travel series with a look at Iceland.
This Nordic nation is the least densely populated country in Europe. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be continuing our travel series with a look at Iceland.
Found in the North Atlantic Ocean, Iceland is an island country that is considered part of Europe, but is actually not connected to the continent. Its population of over 320 thousand is spread out over an area close to 40 thousand square miles.
Despite the fact that glaciers envelop more than ten percent of its landmass, Iceland has a fairly moderate climate.
The warmer regions are found in the southwest, where the majority of Iceland’s population is located. In fact, more than half of the country’s inhabitants live in the capital city of Reykjavík.
If you want to experience urban city life with a beautiful natural backdrop, then Reykjavík is the place for you. You’ll be dazzled by the surrounding countryside as you savor mouth-watering dishes like Icelandic lamb at any of the city’s fine restaurants. There’s also a wide variety of bakeries that make their own bread and pastries.
After checking out some culture, live entertainment and the bustling nightlife, you can spend your nights recovering at one of the country’s luxurious hotels. Don’t forget to shop for souvenirs and get yourself a hand knit sweater or two.
For something more relaxing, take a dip in one of the city’s outdoor pools, which are heated by the area’s abundant geothermal energy. However, Iceland’s most famous geothermal spa is actually found in Grindavik: with an outdoor pool filled with seawater and a health center encircled by a lava field, the Blue Lagoon is a must for visitors.
You don’t have to go too far from the capital to take advantage of everything else Iceland has to offer. The more adventurous types can go rafting or canoeing. Be sure to take in the gorgeous scenery, including the many waterfalls, while you’re at it. You can also go fishing or golfing.
Iceland’s most outstanding feature is its natural landscape, which includes mountains, rock formations and black beaches. When it comes to animals, the country is home to many bird species, most notably the puffin. In addition, the nation has been developing a special breed of horse called the Icelandic horse for centuries.
Whether you’re looking for a trip that will offer stunning views, outdoor activities, or a culturally and historically rich learning experience, you’re sure to find all that and more while visiting Iceland.
