Published by Sony, this genetically modified animal erupted on the scene and brought some much-needed personality to the original PlayStation console, while leading the charge against Nintendo’s iconic plumber.
At the beginning of his first adventure, players are introduced to Crash, a mutated marsupial that has been modified by the evil Doctor Neo Cortex and his Evolvo-Ray.
An early test subject, Crash takes it upon himself to stop the madman, and his henchman Doctor Nitrus Brio, from seeking world domination through the use of their army of mutated animals. At the same time, Crash must also save his girfriend Tawna, another modified bandicoot.
To accomplish these tasks, players must make use of Crash’s many abilities, while navigating three Australian islands owned by the evil doctor. His abilities include spinning like a tornado and performing high jumps.
Helping him survive his many battles with other mutated animals is Wampa fruit, which gives him an extra life for every hundred he consumes. He can also find tokens to unlock bonus stages, and use Witch Doctor’s Masks to shield him from enemy attacks. Finding three of these masks in a row grants him temporary invincibility.
Along the way, Crash will also discover arrow boxes, which propel him across long distances, check boxes that save his progress, and TNT boxes, which explode three seconds after being jumped on.
A platforming adventure split into levels, players must complete a slew of areas, and stage bosses in chronological order to advance.
Not only is Crash bandicoot a wild and unforgettable gaming character, but over the years his many adventures have gone on to entertain countless fans across multiple platforms and genres.
