Actress of the Year: 2014 Movie Woman with Mojo
As the year draws to a close, it’s up to us to decide who had the most Mojo. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and in honor of year’s end, we’re making a choice for Actress of the Year: 2014.
For this video, we’re going to discuss a few of the actresses we felt had the highest profiles this year. But there can be only one, so we’re going to choose who we think had the BIGGEST year and who was 2014’s Woman with Mojo.
The Nominees…
This year’s nominees for Women with Mojo are: Shailene Woodley, Emma Stone, Emily Blunt, Rosamund Pike, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, and Scarlett Johansson.
Shailene Woodley
Before 2014, you would’ve heard the name Shailene Woodley and said “who?” But Woodley will definitely look back at 2014 as a breakthrough year, with three movies under her belt – with both “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Divergent” reaching number one at the box-office. There’s plenty more to come from this new starlet.
Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt may’ve placed on our list of Underrated Actresses, but if 2014 is any indication that won’t be the case for long. The new mom raised her profile by starring opposite Tom Cruise in “Edge of Tomorrow,” proving her perhaps unexpected action star cred. But, Disney’s big-budget “Into the Woods” is where she sparkled most, singing her way into our memories of 2014.
Rosamund Pike
A former Bond girl who escaped the curse associated with the role, Rosamund Pike chose 2014 as her breakout year. “A Long Way Down,” “Hector and the Search for Happiness,” and “What We Did on Our Holiday” – she was undoubtedly busy. But, it was her star-making performance in “Gone Girl” that was the true standout, and it will surely earn her leading lady cred in the years to come.
Angelina Jolie
One woman who has no shortage of leading lady cred is Angelina Jolie, and 2014 was a banner year for her both personally and professionally. She made headlines by finally marrying Brad Pitt, and by making a triumphant return to the screen after a three-year hiatus: she played the villainous “Maleficent,” and scored the highest-grossing film of her career. Not to mention, she produced and directed the war drama “Unbroken,” so Jolie’s one actress who’s tough to beat.
Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson is definitely a contender for 2014: between her freaky sci-fi thriller “Under the Skin,” her freaky role as “Lucy,” her not-freaky role in “Chef” and her return as Black Widow in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Ms. Johansson was a busy lady – and with “Age of Ultron” coming next year, we don’t even know when she has time to sleep.
Runner-Up: Emma Stone
We’re now into the big leagues and onto our runner-up: Emma Stone. In 2014, we are officially in the Stone Age – in a good way. Stone showed all facets of her skills, starring in the Woody Allen flick “Magic in the Moonlight,” making her Broadway debut in “Cabaret,” and reprising her role in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” When she wasn’t busy schooling Jimmy Fallon in lip-sync battles or just generally being awesome, this comedienne was showing her more cynical side in the ambitious black comedy “Birdman” – and proving there’s more to Ms. Stone than you might think.
So who could possibly beat such a year?
And the winner is… Jennifer Lawrence
It seems impossible that anyone could have a 2014 as momentous as Jennifer Lawrence, but she tops herself year after year. With not one but TWO blockbuster franchises to her name and a string of awards and nominations a mile long, girl-next-door and everyone’s lady crush J-Law locks this one down with a bullet – or an arrow, as the case may be.
In fact, Ms. Lawrence wins this race for one simple reason: she was inescapable in 2014, not only because of her professional accomplishments – which were numerous – but also because of her personal life. As if allegedly dating Coldplay’s Chris Martin wasn’t enough; Lawrence also suffered through The Fappening. Cementing her status as the Guinness World Record holder for highest-grossing action heroine ever– with the odds ever in her favor.
