What Comes Next After Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re discussing what comes next after “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

For this video, we’ll be looking at what the future holds for the MCU following the events of Doctor Strange’s most recent brush with the multiverse. Unless you know a memory-erase spell, keep in mind that there will be spoilers.

What are your predictions for what comes after “Multiverse of Madness?” Let us know in the comments.

“Doctor Strange will return.” That’s the only promise that we’re given as “Multiverse of Madness” wraps up. While “Doctor Strange 3” hasn’t been officially announced yet, Benedict Cumberbatch has said that he’ll continue to play Strange “as long as the character is interesting and challenging.” So, don’t expect him to hang up the cloak anytime soon. Based on the mid-credits scene, Charlize Theron is bound to play an essential role in the inevitable third “Doctor Strange” film as Clea, who’s been portrayed as Strange’s student, partner, and wife in the comics. Since Clea is also the niece of Dormammu, Strange will likely find himself bargaining with the Dark Dimension tyrant again. Having gained a third eye, Strange is inclined to show off some new powers as he helps Clea prevent another incursion.

While we’re sure to see Stange again down the line, Wanda Maximoff may be a different story. Many debated whether Wanda was the true villain of “WandaVision.” In “Multiverse of Madness,” Wanda strays even further from her heroic roots. Fully embracing the Scarlet Witch, Wanda murders numerous people and attempts to usurp the life of her alternate self. Wanda finds redemption in the end, destroying her castle as the Darkhold is wiped out across the Multiverse. It’s not revealed if Wanda survives as the castle collapses upon her, although we’ve seen MCU characters bounce back from worse. Given the power that she’s displayed, we think Wanda could brush any injuries off with ease. We doubt she’s getting back on the lunchbox, however.

As of writing, Marvel hasn’t announced when we might see Wanda again, although Elizabeth Olsen has said that she “wouldn’t say no” to a solo Scarlet Witch movie. If that movie does ever get green-lit, we imagine Wanda would pop up in a few other projects first. The spinoff “Agatha: House of Harkness” seems like the most obvious place for Wanda to make an appearance. Given her ties to the multiverse, she could reasonably drop by Season 2 of “Loki” as well.

Although Vision is technically dead, White Vision is still out there with his counterpart’s memories. Assuming Wanda survived, she could still have a happy ending with her love. Their family would remain incomplete without Billy and Tommy, however. Then again, Wanda said there were versions of her sons in every other universe. So, Wanda could just find a reality where her boys have been orphaned and assume the role of their mother. Rick and Morty did something similar.

“Multiverse of Madness” also marked the introduction of the Illuminati, which includes Black Bolt, Hayley Atwell’s Captain Carter, Lashana Lynch as Captain Marvel, John Krasinksi as Reed Richards, and Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Charles Xavier. Wow, this changes everything! And… they’re all dead. Well, that escalated quickly. Although this may seem like a wasted opportunity, there’s a whole multiverse that we’ve barely scratched the surface of. There are surely other versions of these characters who will appear in the foreseeable future… we hope.

While a release date hasn’t been set yet, a “Fantastic Four” movie is in development. We’ve seen one version of Mr. Fantastic reduced to Silly String, but there may be another Richards on Earth-616. Will Krasinksi return to play him, though? With Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire sharing the screen in “No Way Home,” it’s been established that alternate versions of characters can be played by different actors. So, Krasinksi’s presence in the MCU could be limited to a cameo with another actor portraying Richards in future films. If Krasinksi is in it for the long haul, though, we think it’s only a matter of time until they announce Emily Blunt as Sue Storm.

Richards mentions in “Multiverse of Madness” that he has children and their mother is still alive. He’s presumably talking about Franklin and Valeria Richards. While this could just be a throwaway detail, they might be setting up Franklin and Valeria to appear in future projects. If so, maybe we’ll see the Richards children pursue Wanda to avenge their father. And with Krasinksi playing Richards, we’re dream-casting Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds as his kids. Let’s get the whole “A Quiet Place” cast in the MCU!

“Multiverse of Madness” also takes a step toward introducing the X-Men into MCU as Professor X interacts with Scarlet Witch. This version of Professor X gets his neck snapped, but we’ve seen the character die only for him to come back before. The real question is if Patrick Stewart will play Xavier again or if this was one last hurrah. A mutants film is in development, but Kevin Feige mentioned at Comic-Con 2019 that the MCU’s take on the characters would be “quite different than what’s been done before.” That may indicate a whole new cast, although Stewart’s presence in “Multiverse of Madness” could mean a few fan-favorite cast members will return.

The Illuminati isn’t kaput either, as an alternate version of Karl Mordo survives. “Multiverse of Madness” doesn’t reveal what’s happening with Earth-616’s Mordo, who was last seen declaring that there are “too many sorcerers.” Perhaps we’ll see both versions of Mordo team up, as neither is Strange’s biggest fan.

Although brief, Strange mentions shortly after meeting America Chavez that he recently had a multiversal experience involving Spider-Man. How much does Strange remember about Spider-Man, though? During the climax of “No Way Home,” he cast a spell that made everyone forget Peter Parker. Does that mean Strange remembers everything that happened in “No Way Home” except for Spider-Man’s true identity? We may need to wait until the fourth MCU “Spider-Man” film to find out.

Finally, there’s America Chavez, whose ability to leap between realities is sure to make her an integral player going forward. America is last seen learning to hone her skills under Wong’s watch, but it’s unknown when she’ll pop up next. With Kate Bishop recently making her debut and “Ms. Marvel” premiering in June 2022, a Young Avengers team-up may be in America’s future. Being a gateway to different realities, America wouldn’t feel out of place in “Loki” either. As America masters her powers, perhaps she’ll seek out her missing mothers. There’s a multiverse of possibilities and the MCU isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
