Whatever Happened to Sarah Michelle Gellar
Hey Scooby Gang, we have a mystery for you to solve! Where did Sarah Michelle Gellar go? For this video, we’ll be looking at what Sarah Michelle Gellar has been up to since stepping back from high-profile Hollywood roles.
Do you miss this Slayer? Let us know in the comments,
If you were a 90s or 2000s kid, Sarah Michelle Gellar was probably a household name for you, because during those decades she was everywhere! However, she actually got her start in the 80s with roles in the television film “An Invasion of Privacy” and a Burger King commercial. McDonald’s actually sued Burger King over the ad, naming Gellar in the lawsuit. There were rumors that she was banned from McDonald’s for life, but Gellar has clarified that she just didn’t want to go to a McD’s and be recognized as the face of Burger King.
She followed these commercials with several smaller roles until 1992, when she landed the starring role in the short-lived teen drama “Swans Crossing” and a recurring role on “All My Children”. Her rise to fame came in 1997, with a slew of high-profile roles, most notably as the titular character in Joss Whedon’s series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. The show would go on to be a major hit, lasting seven seasons and generating a spin-off, “Angel”, which Gellar also appeared in several times. 1997 also brought Gellar her first major film role, when she starred alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, and her future husband Freddie Prinze Jr. in “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. A few months later she also appeared in “Scream 2”.
During the next few years, Gellar also starred in a slew of movies, including “Cruel Intentions”, “The Grudge”, and as the live action version of Daphne in two Scooby Doo adaptations. During this run, she won several awards, including a Saturn Award, five Teen Choice Awards, a Daytime Emmy, and a Golden Globe nomination. For almost a decade she was everywhere. Then, from sometime around 2007, she was a lot harder to find on screens. While she did continue to take on minor film roles, and star in a few short-lived series, her roles were much more low profile.
So what has Sarah Michelle Gellar been up to since 2007? Well, in 2009, she gave birth to her daughter Charlotte. After the birth of her daughter, she briefly returned to the small screen, starring in “Ringer” from 2011-2012, where she played twin sisters. Unfortunately the show was cancelled after just one season. She gave birth to her son Rocky in 2012, and one year later returned to TV again with “The Crazy Ones”, which won her a People’s Choice Award but was also cancelled after one season.
Sarah and hubby Freddie feel strongly about putting family first, and have said that they would likely never star in a movie together again, because someone needs to be home for the kids. This dedication is also evident in Gellar’s decision to co-found a baking company called Foodstirs in 2015, which supplies baking kits for families to create healthy, organic snacks. The kits also focus on simplifying baking so that kids can learn and enjoy the process. Today you can find these kits through their Foodstirs website or on other retailers such as Amazon.
Gellar’s love of acting hasn’t dimmed however, and along with managing a successful company and busy family life, she has continued to pursue new roles. You may have actually heard her voice several times in the past few years without realizing it. She’s voiced several characters on “Robot Chicken”, including Ellen Ripley, Sarah Conner, and of course Buffy Summers and Daphne Blake. And for those Star Wars fans out there, she voices the seventh sister from “Star Wars Rebels”, although thanks to the vocal effects you have to listen closely to know it’s her. She’s also set to voice Teela in 2021’s “Masters of the Universe: Revelation”.
So that’s what happened to Sarah Michelle Gellar. While she may not be gracing our TVs every week kicking vampire butt or fighting off monsters on the big screen, she is still very much a presence in Hollywood. She’s continued to work steadily in voice acting, supporting roles, and made for TV movies. It’s safe to say that many of us would love to see more of Gellar, and she’s currently working on two series: “Other People’s Houses” and “Sometimes I Lie”. Fingers crossed that we get to see these on our screens in the near future!
