Super Meat Boy Sequel Announced for 2018

Get Ready For Some Meaty Hype!

To say that the original Super Meat Boy was a monster success would be one of the biggest understatements in gaming. It’s level design, rapid-fire pace and cute yet bloody charm earned the affection of gamers and critics alike.

Now, it looks like the little red cube is back for another round!

According to an article on Kotaku

Once upon a time, Super Meat Boy Forever – a sort-of-sequel to the quiveringly difficult 2010 platform classic – was announced for PC and mobile devices. Somewhere along the line, its development hit an impasse and word on the game went quiet, until now. Super Meat Boy Forever has finally resurfaced and will apparently launch next year.

It’s coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, iOS, Android, and Switch in 2018 – with Nintendo noting that it “will make its debut” on Switch – and is said to be a true sequel to the original Super Meat Boy. This time, we’re told, the big M.B. and his ladypal Bandage Girl will be navigating their perilous, platform-based world in search of their tiny babbymeatsack Nugget, who’s been kidnapped by the evil Dr. Fetus.

In terms of what’s new, here’s how developer Team Meat describes Super Meat Boy Forever: “Levels are dynamically constructed based on difficulty. Each time you beat a level, it reconstructs into a harder version of itself (up to a point… we aren’t gods). Meat Boy and Bandage Girl are no longer defenseless, they can punch and kick their enemies. And, the biggest difference, the controls are now two buttons, you have a jump, a jump attack, a dive, and a slide.”

Around the time of its original 2014 announcement, Super Meat Boy co-creator Edmund McMillen said of Forever, “it is not an endless runner. It uses auto-run but it’s not at all endless”. That still very much appears to be the case, and Team Meat has now elaborated further on the game’s auto-run core.

“To describe Super Meat Boy Forever as an auto-runner would be a disservice. It’s like saying that Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a game about a swordsman. Meat Boy/Bandage Girl do always run, but there is so much more to the game than running. They can attack enemies, they can dash through the air, there are tons of levels, there are bosses, there are secrets, and there is a surprising amount of difficulty that doesn’t feel unfair. It’s everything you would expect a Super Meat Boy sequel to be. Super Meat Boy Forever is a Super Meat Boy game that you can play anywhere on pretty much any device that’s powerful enough to run it!”

If this is to be believed, not only are we going to be getting even more hilariously punishing gameplay,  but also a few technical surprises along the way.
