Can They Dazzle Us Once Again?
In terms of show don’t tell, Journey was a milestone. Taking players on a personal voyage through a world littered with investing lore, terrifying creatures and emotional poignancy. All without a single word of spoken dialogue.
However, the visuals were really the stars of the show. From the golden sands of a seemingly endless desert to ominous underwater caverns all the way to the frozen peaks of a mountain, gamers were treated to a truly unique experience that reinforced the notion that video games could be art.
While many consider the aquatic adventure ABZU to be the true successor to Journey, the reveal of this new title by the original developers might just put that into question.
According to an article on IGN –
Thatgamecompany CEO Jenova Chen took the stage to showcase the first footage of what he called a “romantic social adventure game.” You play as the children of light, with a goal of bringing light to where it’s needed the most.
On their official blog, Thatgamecompany wrote “If you can imagine the delight of visiting a theme park where lasting memories are made, we envision Sky will sometimes feel like that.”
Sky supports up to 8 players, and the entire game can be controlled with a single finger. It will launch first on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad this winter.
Back in 2014, we reported that the studio had secured $7 million in funding for this project. The next year, news broke that the game would be a “connection-driven experience. Finally, late last year, Thatgamecompany released a trio of images that highlighted the tone of what we now know to be Sky.
Thatgamecompany’s previous games include Flow, Flower, and Journey, which we awarded Game of the Year back in 2012. Sky will be the first game from the studio that doesn’t launch on a PlayStation console.
