Shadows Die Twice: Are We Getting A New Souls/Bloodborne Game?!

Grab Your Swords and Saw Cleavers!

With beautifully macabre settings, lore that is tactfully hidden away for players to uncover, along with a slew of incredibly difficult yet engaging boss battles, the Dark Souls series as well as its spiritual sibling Bloodborne have managed to earn itself an enormous following. Despite many claiming that Dark Souls 3 was an end of an era, we weren’t under any illusions that the fire in this series had been entirely put out. Besides, if there ever was a game that was begging for a sequel, it was Bloodborne.

While it’s hard to say if our prayers have been answered, FromSoftware did give fans a little tease to get their minds racing with possibilities. Last night, at the Game Awards, they dropped a ten second teaser that featured some rather grim looking imagery, along with the tagline “Shadows Die Twice.”

Is this a brand new beast or the next entry in the Soulsborne-verse?

According to an article on Gamespot

Just before the official start of The Game Awards, Dark Souls and Bloodborne developer From Software offered a tease of its latest game with a short, 10-second teaser. Very little is known about the game, as all that was shown was a bloody rope wrapped around a spoke between what appears to be two bones. The background showcased what appears to be parchment with inked script, but none of the elements provide a clear hint as to the game in question. Recently, From Software confirmed that it is working on a new Armored Core game, though the video shown is a far cry from what we expect from that particular series.

The only detail that did stand out as a potential link was the phrase: “Shadows Die Twice.” It’s not clear if this is the title, or just a tagline.

In September 2016, From Software president and creator Hidetaka Miyazaki stated that in addition to working on a new Armored Core game, the company was also developing a “weird” game. “When I say ‘weird,’ the genre might be a little weird,” he explained. “The game is weird. But we are diligently making it in all seriousness, so I just want people to know that when they think it’s strange.”

During the same interview, Miyazaki also stated: “For me, Dark Souls III is the end, but that doesn’t mean the end for Dark Souls. If someone other than myself, like another staff member, wants to make a Dark Souls, then I don’t want to deny others from making future installments.”

A continuation of the Dark Souls name, a Bloodborne sequel, or a brand new title that has the potential to live up to the other two? We’re not sure what we want more.

Be sure to check out the teaser trailer below, and see if you can guess which game the developers have planned.
