Get Over It: Bennett Foddy’s Platformer Nominated For Independent Games Award!

Can It Climb All The Way To The Top?

There have been few games that have inspired as much dedication, ire and outright mental breakdowns in recent months than Bennett Foddy’s magnum opus. Taking the simple act of climbing, Getting Over It proved to be an indie hit that somehow managed to provide a gaming experience that was as philosophical as it was borderline masochistic. Naturally, gamers took to it like moths to a flame, and as a result it earned the attention of the Independent Games Festival.

According to an article on Gamespot, along with other hits such as Night in the Woods and West of Loathing, Getting Over It has been nominated for numerous awards. Too bad biggest rage quit isn’t a category, because Bennett Foddy would take home the win without question!

The Independent Games Festival has announced its nominees for this year’s awards, with critically-acclaimed indie games like Night in the Woods and Baba is You topping the list with multiple nominations.

In total, 35 games have been nominated for the awards, which will be given out in March at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.

The most-nominated game is Baba is You, a puzzle game that allows players to alter the rules and game logic to help them solve puzzles. The adventure game Night in the Woods, known for its exploratory gameplay and iconic cat characters, has received several nominations too, and so has Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, a sadistic climbing game that rewards players who reach the top of the mountain. All three games are nominated for the $30,000 Seumas McNally Grand Prize, along with West of Loathing, Into the Breach, and Heat Signature.

Maybe the game’s unique style of challenge will be enough to push it past the others, but its up against some stiff competition. After all, Night in the Woods is an indie darling whose stunning art design and narrative has made it an instant classic. It’s going to be a tough call!

If you’re still curious about the other nominees, then be sure to check out the list below to see who is in with a chance of winning both fame and fortune. Also, if you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, then you can have a gander at our personal picks for the Top 10 Best Indie Video Game Stories!
