Stepping out of the shadows of 2017 with a crazy premise and even crazier protagonist, Kakegurui somehow ended up becoming one of last year’s most endearing series. Given how the content of said series revolved around addiction, gambling, social slavery, and plenty of unnerving sexual tension, that is quite the accomplishment in of itself!
The show’s success can primarily be attributed to its leading lady; Yumeko Jabami. The furthest thing from a damsel in distress or your average student, Yumeko lives for the thrill that gambling brings, consequences be damned.
The fact she has more than a few screws loose along with her obvious, almost perverse outlook on gambling would normally paint her as either a crazed villain or an unlikable character, but yet she never crosses that line. Sure, there are a few moments where she creeps the hell out of everyone, but thanks to her addiction being balanced out by a genuine warmth and tenderness she never manages to stray too far from our good graces. In short, she acts as the perfect foil for the anime’s bizarre setting, managing to captivate us with her chipper yet warped attitude.
As it happens, it seems like her unique charm seems to have worked out better than expected, as according to an article on Anime News Network,  Kakegurui will indeed be getting a second season!
The “Hyakkaou Private Academy Cultural Festival” event announced on Saturday that the broadcast of a second Kakegurui anime season has been green-lit.
The anime adapts Homura Kawamoto and TÅru Naomura‘s manga of the same name. The anime premiered on Tokyo MX in Japan on July 1, and the series later aired on TV Aichi, RKB Mainichi Broadcasting, and BS11. Netflix Japan began streaming the series on July 2, and will premiere outside of Japan in 2018.
We can only imagine what kind of crazed gambles Yumeko will find herself in next, but chances are she is going to enjoy every second of it, no matter how high the stakes get!
