Retro In The Best Way Possible
There’s certainly a right way and a wrong way to handle things when creating a video game that is trying to imitate a time-honoured title. As we have seen all too recently, simply regurgitating the gameplay and textures will only end up pushing away your audience. After all, we all love the original Resident Evil, but that doesn’t mean we want to play a game that seems to only incorporate its awful controls!
We’re looking at you Vaccine.Â
However, it seems that a new platformer going by the name of The Messenger has managed to hit all the right notes by channelling an NES classic; Ninja Gaiden. Not only does it have the look down, but seems to put an emphasis on slick, frantic action along with plenty of crazy boss fights that look so silly that only ninja dressed in blue could deal with it!
According to an article on GameInformer –Â
Developer Sabotage Studio has announced a new indie platformer, The Messenger, that invokes the NES classic Ninja Gaiden.
The new game, a sidescroller designed to look like Tecmo’s tough-as-nails ninja action game, looks like a perfectly suitable spiritual sequel on its own. Perhaps unfortunately, the initial trailer spoils what looks to be the game’s hook, that the story spans multiple generations of video game technology. At the end of the teaser, the main character jumps into a portal and emerges a with new armor, a spiffy new hat, and 16-bit graphics.
The Messenger is scheduled for release later this year for “PCs and consoles.”
Hopefully it will incorporate other famous Ninja Gaiden tropes such as flipping on ever conceivable surface and being able to shower opponents with an unlimited supply of shuriken!
