Super Bowl LII had no shortage of memorable trailers, from Solo: A Star Wars Story, to Avengers: Infinity War, to The Cloverfield Paradox. One of the most talked about trailers, though, wasn’t even a real trailer, but a Tourism Australia ad disguised as a Crocodile Dundee reboot. Initially, a couple trailers were released online featuring Danny McBride as Brian Dundee, Michael “Crocodile” Dundee’s son. The trailers even included appearances from Australian actors like Russell Crowe and Margot Robbie, making the project seem all the more legit.
Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home seemed to have all the makings of a Hollywood reboot, right down the fact that some of the gags in the trailer work and others fall flat. It was eventually confirmed, however, that this was just part of an elaborate ad campaign. During the Super Bowl, McBride and Chris Hemsworth hilariously revealed this wasn’t really a trailer. Interestingly, this campaign reportedly cost around $36 million, which is more than any of the actual Crocodile Dundee movies cost to produce. Even stranger, it’s possible that this fake trailer may inspire an actual movie.
Let’s take a look at 3 reasons why Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home could become a reality.
3. There’s a petition to make it happen
When rumors started to circulate that a Crocodile Dundee reboot may be in the works, many of us assumed that Hollywood had officially run out of ideas. Once the trailers started to hit, however, the impressive cast and some of the one-liners got people surprisingly excited, which made it all the more disappointing when the rug was pulled out from under them. Australian news site NT News was even inspired to create a petition to #BringBackDundee with Paul Hogan involved. The petition already has over 4 thousand signatures after only just a couple days.
2. Chris Hemsworth is open to the idea
Based on the chemistry between McBride and Hemsworth in the trailers, the Dundee reboot shows great promise as a buddy picture. Hemsworth himself actually revealed in an interview that he’d be open to making a feature film. “If we could find the right story and script we might do it,” Hemsworth stated. Well, if Thor doesn’t live through the Infinity War, Hemsworth could probably use another franchise to fall back on.
1. It wouldn’t be the first time a Super Bowl commercial became a movie
We all remember Space Jam, the ’90s classic that brought the likes of Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan together. Many forget, however, that this bizarre crossover started out as an ad for Air Jordan that aired during the Super Bowl in 1992. If a hit movie could stem from from that one-minute ad, a new Dundee movie may be more probable than we thought.
Of course the real question is if a new Dundee movie SHOULD happen. As funny as it might be with McBride and Hemsworth as leads, the reboot could also diminish a national treasure’s legacy.
