This reality TV star has more influence than you might think.
On February 21st, Kylie Jenner shared a tweet that had a bigger economic impact than anyone could have anticipated:
sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me… ugh this is so sad.
— Kylie Jenner (@KylieJenner) February 21, 2018
Following the tweet, the social media sharing application Snapchat suffered an enormous loss, to the tune of $1.3 billion.
According to BBC News:
âAfter dropping almost 8%, shares in Snap closed 6% down on Wall Street, and are now back near the $17 price at which the shares were listed when the company floated on the stock market in March of last year.â
Jenner followed up her criticism with this tweet, but it seems the damage had already been done:
still love you tho snap … my first love

This loss brings into question the supposed authority of social media influencers and their ability to influence the general public. In addition, Jennerâs tweet came in the wake of a massive application redesign, much to the chagrin of many Snapchat users.
