Memoria Freese: Crunchyroll Launches Its First Video Game

Is It Wrong To Try And Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon In Video Game Form Courtesy Of An Anime Streaming Service?

To many, Crunchyroll is the place to go when they want to get their latest fix of an ongoing anime series, or perhaps run the gambit and try their hand a brand new show. Over time, they’ve gone on to become one of if not the premiere anime streaming service. With so much attention and resources now at their disposal, it only makes sense they they would want to expand their horizons. That being said, the last thing any of us expected was for them to suddenly come out with a video game!

This unexpected venture has resulted in the release of Memoria Freese; a game based on the incredibly popular dungeon-crawler anime DanMachi. As opposed to Bell and Hestia getting into all kinds of romantically awkward situations with the odd splash of hack n’ slash, this new addition to the franchise is a 2D RPG made available for both iOS and Android.

According to an article on Tubefilter –

Crunchyroll, which delivers dozens of Japanese anime series to an international audience, is getting into game development. The streaming service  has co-produced Memoria Freese, a mobile game based off the program DanMachi.

Crunchyroll, which offers both free and paid tiers, is not the first streaming service to enter the world of game development. Last year, Netflix launched a mobile game that tied into the launch of the second season of the hit series Stranger Things. In exploring its own ambitions in the gaming space, Crunchyroll noted that 90% of its audience identify as gamers. For its first playable adaptation of an anime, Crunchyroll chose to design around a show that received universally positive reviews from its viewers, making it one of the streaming service’s most-liked titles.

Memoria Freese is available for both iOS and Android devices. It is free-to-play with in-game microtransactions.

Depending on the success of this little project, we can expect to see similar titles crop up further down the line. If Crunchyroll does indeed decide to pour its time and effort into making anime-based mobile games, let’s hope that they sprinkle plenty of diversity into future instalments. Even if Memoria Freese turns out to be a household name, the last thing that any gamer wants to see is a slew of carbon copies.
