It’s fair to say that video games have come a long way from the days of dreary escort missions; those horrendous experiences where even the tiniest scratch on a friendly NPC would cost you a game over. They were tedious, repetitive, aggravating beyond belief and broke our immersion more times than we could count. Luckily, modern gaming has made bold steps to turn what would originally be considered a burden into saving graces. Nowhere is this more true than with the use of child characters.

Whether they’re pulling their own weight or serving as the emotional crux of the story, we can safety say that without these kids some of gaming’s modern gems would have had nowhere near as much of an impact.

#3: Clementine
“The Walking Dead” (2012)

As the zombie apocalypse consumes the planet, escaped convict Lee finds himself in the unexpected position of protecting a little girl from both the horrors of both the living and the dead. In spite of numerous tragedies and near-death experiences, Clementine managed to hold onto every last shred of innocence as she and Lee tried to find shelter from a world long gone. She connected with players on a personal level, forever standing by their side when everyone else seemed determined to either blame or kill you. Then of course there’s the heartbreaking conclusion where she was forced to make a choice in regards Lee’s fate. Yeah, we’re still not over that.

#2: Atreus
“God of War” (2018)

Nobody was expecting the Ghost of Sparta to get himself a son, so imagine our surprise when Kratos Jr turned out to be a badass in his own right. While the relationship between the two is fragmented at best, Atreus served as the perfect foil for this new iteration of the former God of War. His innocence and warrior’s spirit were wholly endearing, though the greatest addition would have to be his marksmanship skills. When going up against the likes of angry Norse Gods and Valkyries, it pays to have a partner who can volley them with lightning arrows.

#1: Ellie
“The Last of Us” (2013)

To this day, there hasn’t been a companion as capable nor as emotional shattered as this lone survivor. Somehow immune to Clicker bites, Ellie finds herself partnering up with Joel in order to seek out the Fireflies, all in the faint hope of saving mankind from extinction. Of course, the journey there takes both Joel and Ellie to the darkest of places; forcing them to fight against unimaginable horrors as well as their own perspectives. Regardless of how you feel about the game’s conclusion, there’s no denying that Ellie’s sailor mouth and sniping skills are the stuff of gaming legend.
