Halloween is just around the corner, which means its time to bring the fright factor to homes everywhere. If you’re in the mood for a few spooks and scares but don’t fancy tuning in for another Michael Myers movie, why not bring a little Japanimation horror into your lives by checking out these three spine-chilling anime?
#3: “Corpse Party: Tortured Souls” (2013)
If you’re here to watch a group of innocent youths lose their lives in the goriest way possible, then you can’t go wrong with this little number. Adapted from the video game of the same name, the plot follows some very unfortunate high school students who are transported to a haunted academy populated by murderous spirits. Don’t be thrown off by the teen drama tropes, since it won’t be long until Sachiko shows up to start stabbing out eyes with scissors.
#2: “Another” (2012)
Like Halloween itself, sometimes it’s just as much about the cheesiness of the occasion as it is the legitimate scares. In that regard, Another excels. After all, watching students be struck down a la Final Destination style can really make the tension rise…yet when they get axed off due to incidents like umbrella impalement, you can’t help but start to laugh and appreciate the silliness of the whole thing. Hilarity and death in equal measure!
#1: “Parasyte” (2014-15)
If you’re up for binging a whole series this Halloween weekend, then why not try one of the most successful body-horror anime to ever hit the small screen. When parasites descend from space and start turning humans into deadly vessels for their carnivorous urges, it’s down to one unlucky student in order to protect those he loves after gaining a parasitic ally in his right arm. The violence and gore here is top notch, so you can expect to see quite the body pile stack up before the credits roll.
