Selena Gomez vs Beauty Industry
When Selena Gomez took the stage to accept her award for favorite female artist at the 2016 American Music Awards, it was her first public appearance in months, following putting a pause on her tour to focus on her mental health. She took the time to not only thank her fans for supporting her through it all, but to critique Instagram’s beauty standards, telling everyone to stop focusing on the physical and start following their hearts instead. We hear you Selena!
Nick Cannon vs Eminem
Round one of the infamous Eminem/Mariah Carey fight was Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed”, followed by round 2 with Eminem’s “The Warning”. Round 3 was an unexpected diss track from Carey’s then husband Nick Cannon, called “I’m A Slick Rick”, but that wasn’t enough? Nope, Cannon decided to take one more swing at Slim Shady during the 2011 BET Awards, where he took part in a Kevin Hart skit and got irked on the the point of saying: “I will whoop Eminem’s a**! I ain’t scared of him! Matter of fact, I will whoop any white boy’s name starts with M. Macaulay Culkin, Matthew McConaughey, Melanie Griffith!”
Tina Fey vs Online Bullies
We already know that Tina Fey has experience with mean girls, she wrote an entire movie about them! But when she took home the award for Best Actress TV Series Musical or Comedy at the 2009 Golden Globes, it was time to address the internet trolls, by name! She hilariously went through a list of usernames that continue to virtually tear her down and the audience couldn’t get enough. Turns out most celebrities can relate to Fey’s experience online.
Alicia Keys vs Makeup
No makeup? No problem. Alicia Keys gave an enormously powerful speech at the 2016 VMAs about love, unity and equality, where not only did she promote acceptance, but she did it without a drop of makeup. This may seem like a small feat to some, but given the beauty standards currently present within the entertainment industry, this was a moment worth mentioning. She even wrote an essay all about her #nomakeup journey on Lenny, in case you wanted to know more!
Miley Cyrus Vs Music Industry
She came in like a wrecking ball and so did her speech. Upon winning the 2014 VMA for Video of the Year with “Wrecking Ball”, the tables quickly turned when Miley Cyrus sent someone else to accept her award: a homeless man. He commented on the imbalance between the issues faced by homeless youth in Los Angeles and the astounding profit made by the music industry every year, prompting the crowd to donate and help everyone realize their dreams. Hey a diss is a diss, even when it’s as honourable as this.
