The Front Runner: LG LW8016ER Window AC

LG is one of the top dogs in the AC business, and this window model is an absolute powerhouse. Not only does it have an 8,000 BTU rating – and the capability of cooling a room up to 340 square feet — but it also offers three cooling speeds and three fan speeds. It even has an energy-saving mode, and can dehumidify a room by 2.2 pints per hour. Ideal for a large bedroom, and coming with a remote control, it’s even a great value option at around $280.

The Comparable: Frigidaire FFRA0511R1 Window AC

Although this window unit may not be as powerful or sophisticated as our front runner pick, it is almost half the price at $170. It doesn’t come with a remote control, but it does have a 5,000-BTU rating, two fan settings and two cooling settings, meaning it’s good for a room of up to 150 square feet. And it’s really easy to install, requiring just a screwdriver and a few fixtures for the job.

The Portable: Honeywell MN10CES Portable AC

Just because this model is portable, doesn’t mean it lacks oomph. With a 10,000-BTU rating, around a 400 square foot cooling ability, a slick design, remote control and digital LCD display, this thing has everything. Plus it cools and dehumidifies. Of course, you pay a premium for all these luxuries, as it carries a price tag of around $500.

The Flexible One: Friedrich Chill CP06G10B Window AC

We’ve chosen a relatively small 6,000-BTU unit for this entry – which costs about $370, but really, we wanted to draw attention to the entire Friedrich Chill Series range. Offering units from 5,200 BTU all the way up to 24,000 BTU, this window AC range has a model to suit every budget and room size. There’s also plenty of technical capabilities to shout about too, with three cooling speeds, an energy-saving mode, a remote control and a 24-hour timer.

The Clever One: Frigidaire FGRC084WA1 Window AC

If you specifically want a bedroom AC, then Frigidaire has this brilliant $350 model. This 8,000 BTU model is good for rooms of up to 350 square feet. The main reason it’s great for bedrooms is because it looks slick, it’s extremely quiet and it can be controlled via a smartphone app. So, no need to get out of bed and tweak the settings in the middle of the night!
